Chapter 58
The next morning Cortney was in the library, she was searching for information about Occlumencey and Legiliemency.
" Why weren't you at breakfast ? " a voice asked.
" Because Draco, there's something I want to research. That just can't wait," Cortney explained.
" Like what? " Draco asked leaning against a table.
" Magic that our school doesn't really cover," Cortney answered.
" Like what ? " he asked cautiously.
" Legilimency and Occulmeny," Cortney answered as he flipped through pages.
" I don't know if that is such a good idea," Draco advised.
" My mum knows this stuff," Cortney admitted. " Do you think they would sell this stuff at Hogsmeade ?"
" Probably," Draco replied. " Hurry up, don't want to be late to class". With that Draco left Cortney alone. She checked out a book that information on both subjects and hurried to her class. Her class was Defense Against Dark Arts. She walked in to see a paper-flying bird being burned up. Umbridge turned around and glared at her.
" Late on the first day? Tisk tisk," spat Umbridge. " You'll be serving detention with me later". Cortney rolled her eyes and found her seat next to Pansy. Before Cortney could say anything Umbridge began to talk and walk down the aisle. She flicked her wand and the chalk began to write on the chalkboard. " Good morning children. Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations. O-W-Ls. Study hard, and you will be rewarded. Fail to do so and the consequences may be severe." She flicked her wand again and textbooks were being distributed magically. " Your previous instruction of this subject has been disturbingly uneven. But you'll be pleased to know". a textbook plopped in front of Cortney. The textbook read ' Defense Art Spells Basic for Beginners' Cortney gave Pansy a look and she shrugged it off. " From now on you'll be following a carefully structured, Ministry-approved course Defensive Magic. Everyone was flipping through the books, Hermione rose her hand. " Yes? "
" There's nothing in here about using defensive spells? " Hermione questioned.
" Using spells !? Why I can't imagine why you would need to use spells in my classroom? "
" We're not using magic? " Ron asked.
" You'll be learning defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way," Umbridge said.
" What use is that? If we're going to be attacked it won't be risk-free," Harry stated.
" Students will raise their hand when they speak in my class," Umbridge ordered. Harry and Ron looked at each other. " It is the view of the Ministry that theoretical knowledge will be sufficient to get you through your examinations which is, after all, is what school is all about," she said.
" That is not what school is all about," stated Cortney.
" And how's theory supposed to prepare us for what's out there? " Harry asked.
" There is nothing out there dear. Who do you imagine would attack children, like yourself? " Umbridge questioned clearly annoyed.
" Oh, I don't know maybe, Lord Voldemort? " Harry suggested. The classroom went deadly silent as everyone exchanged glances. Cortney looked over at Seamus and saw him full on glaring at Harry like other people in the class.
" Now let me quite plain," Umbridge began as she walked toward Harry. " You have been told that a certain Dark Wizard is at large once again. This. Is. A. Lie".
"It's not a lie! I saw him! I fought him! " Harry argued.
" Are we not allowed to have our own opinions about these things? Cause I believe Harry," Cortney said.
" Detention! Mr. Potter and Ms. Lestrange! " Umbridge demanded.
" So according to you, Cedric Diggory dropped dead on his own record? " Harry asked.
" Cedric Diggory's death was a tragic accident," she said.
" It was murder ! Voldemort killed him! You must know that !" said Harry.
" Enough! " Umbridge shouted. " Enough, see me later Mr. Potter. My office".

Before Cortney had to go detention with Umbridge, Corney tried to squeeze as much information in as she could. Information from the books she checked out. She sat outside under a tree. In the distance, she saw Dean, Seamus, and Neville heading her way. They were all looking at each other and talking so she pointed her wand at Neville.
" Legilimens," said softly, but with meaning. All of a sudden she was navigating through his mind. She now visiting a time where two were studying last year. And then she out of his mind and back at Hogwarts. She put her wand down and stared blankly at the ground.
" Cortney," the boys said sitting down with her.
" Boys," Cortney said with a smile looking up.
"You were quite vocal in class today," Seamus stated as he pulled at the grass.
" What would have you done? " Cortney asked.
" Nothing, mum believes the Daily Prophet and so do I," Seamus said.
" You sound just like Milan," said Cortney.
" Well Milan knows what he is talking about," said Seamus.
" I'm just want to point out that it's only the first day of school and you already have two detentions with the same teacher," pointed out Dean.
" That takes mad skill," Cortney said smiling.
" Sure," Dean huffed making her laugh.
" What's that you go there? " Neville asked gesturing towards the book.
" A book," Cortney stated as she closed it and shoved it in her bag. Before any of them could see the cover.
" What about? " Neville asked suspiciously.
" Herbology, I want to try doing it mostly on my own this year," Cortney lied.
" What if it all goes wrong? " Neville asked.
" I'll simply go to you," Cortney said making him groan.

Cortney was now standing outside Umbridge's office with Harry.
" Come in," Umbridge said opening the door. They walked in and the room was super pink, with a bunch of cat plates. Cortney looked at Harry concerned. " Good evening Mr. Potter and Ms. Lestrange. Sit". Cortney closed the door and sat on the right of Harry. " You're going to be doing lines for me today". The two students went to grab their writing utensils.
" No, not with your quills. You're going to be using a rather special quill of mine". She gave them each a quill with a dark pink feather. " Now I want you Mr. Potter to write: I must not tell lies and you, Ms. Lestrange. For the first detention, I gave you, the line for you is I will not be late. Tomorrow's will be I will not believe lies. Remember that".
" How many lines? " Harry asked stiffly.
" Well let's say as long as it takes for the message to sink in," she replied. She began to walk away.
" You didn't give us any ink," Cortney reminded her.
" Oh you won't be needing ink," Umbridge said. Cortney looked at her suspiciously. The two began their lines, the ink went from a black to a dark blood red. The two student's hands began to burn like as if there was a knife cutting them. Cortney looked at her hurting hand and saw the words ' I will not be late'. She looked at Harry concerned and he gave her the same look. He had ' I must not tell lies on his hand. Umbridge came around to them with that sickly smile. " Yes ? " she asked.
" Nothing," the two students said.
" That's right because you know deep down, you deserved to be punished. Don't you. Go on". They walked out of her office rubbing their hands, blood seeped from them. Cortney made her way to the Gryffindor common room with Harry.
