five. alexander the great
Lucia feared death, it was a common human thing to fear. It was more of how she was gonna die instead of when. She didn't want to die of old age, hell, she didn't even want to reach her seventies, she felt too old at that age. Possibly from a heart attack, even if that sounded painful, she wanted a quick, painless death, so, it was understandable she didn't want to die in the hands of an assassin ripping her skin open to pull her organs out, even though it seemed quick, it had to be very painful.
The brunette stayed behind the pillar, all she could hear was a horrific sound of bones cracking, gasping from the man, a few metallic sounds being dropped, possibly instruments being used to harm the body, Lucia slowly turned around just enough to take a peek at what was happening behind her, she could see Layla moving around the tomb, their eyes met each other as she did, her head shook a few times, Lucia could feel her heartbeat on her throat, her hands shaking uncontrollably from the panic.
A small creaking sound made the man jump on top of the tomb, Lucia turned back and hid her body completely again, her hand covering her lips, she could only listen to the sound the man was making, there was a sudden sound that gave the idea to Lucia that the man wasn't near Layla, instead far away, taking another look she could see she was right, the man who now looked more like a creature, was crawling the boards underneath the area where Steven stood, someone had to do something quickly.
"Run, I'll find you." Steven screamed after a ceramic was thrown and Layla ran, catching the creature's attention completely, a sudden impact was heard behind Lucia, turning around she noticed a table over the body of the creature. "Lucia? Are you okay?" He asked as she climbed down, his feet hitting the ground in a loud thump.
"I am okay, we got to keep on moving, Layla will be okay, she's smart enough to find us, right?" Lucia asked coming out of the shadow and standing beside Steven, he nodded his head softly, Lucia took another look at the creature underneath the table, it looked ancient and rotten, and she could feel her stomach turn ready to throw up.
"I hope she does, now, come on, let's follow the path." Steven and Lucia took their way through a passage and a light shined at the end of it, hurrying over in hopes that no other creature would follow them.
Lucia's lungs burned with every breath she took in, she didn't like to rush, but knowing their lives were now possibly in danger, she had no other choice. There was a moment when Steven stopped rushing and for Lucia, this was the moment to finally do the same and relax just a little bit.
"So, what now? Do we know where we are?" Lucia questioned as glanced at the ceiling, noticing how luminous it was.
"We are on the right path, I memorized the map, we are going upwards, we got to be careful with our steps, we don't want any booby traps to fall on us or something." Steven chuckled looking back at Lucia making sure she was following him.
"Do you think they made traps in here? If they did, for who exactly?" Lucia asked, her steps slow and meticulous, Lucia's adrenaline was high, she could feel it rushing inside her veins, if she could, she would run, she wanted to run for some odd reason, she wanted to reach someplace safe.
"Who knows if they could put traps here, but I wouldn't be surprised if we do find some." Steven stopped, putting his hand up for Lucia to notice and mimick him. "Looks like we have to be careful now." Glancing down both of them noticed how the floor was broken into pieces, their steps had to be calculated unless they wanted to trip or twist their ankles. "Oh, my days. First ones in. Tomb fit for a pharaoh."
"This is amazing." Lucia looked around before taking a step after another, there was water surrounding them, which she didn't know how deep it could be, and she didn't want to find out. Steven began saying some names Lucia didn't recognize but she could see the statues that had been perfectly placed around the tomb.
"Oh, it's gotta be one of the big'uns." Steven stopped as his attention drew down at the water, at his reflection precisely. "What are you gonna do? Try and drown us now?" He continued walking again before making another brief stop.
"What are you two guys talking about?" Lucia asked hoping it was some information that could be useful to them.
"About before, but nothing else, he will survive." Steven turned to look at the brunette, pushing the conversation aside he took the last big step and reached the area where the tomb rested peacefully. "Wow, look at that, at all these relics." Steven's eyes were wide and filled with pure joy. "Woah, let me help you there." Steven stretched his hand out for Lucia, who was looking for a way to move as she had taken a bad step and now was balancing.
Lucia took it, her feet shifting on the stone beneath her standing near the edge Lucia pushed her body forward, her feet touching the stone platform missing almost by the inch, her body balancing back. Steven gripped her hand tightly pulling her, both of their bodies close to each other, close enough that Lucia could feel Steven's breathing on her cheek.
"You have very pretty eyes." Steven's lips formed a smile so shyly that he took a step back and apologized.
"Thank you." Lucia answered clearing her throat. The brunette walked around the tomb, seeing the symbols written all over it, the tomb exactly like she had seen in movies, the colors, the Pharoah's face. "Who is it?" She asked when Steven confusingly looked at the tomb.
"That can't be right, that's Macedonian." Steven kneeled in front of the tomb, his hand passing through the symbols. "The only pharaoh, but I mean, he insisted on calling himself Egyptian."
"You need to be more specific Steven, I got a C minus on History." Lucia said, she felt a bit impatient as she didn't know what or who was Steven talking about.
"I think we're looking at the long-lost tomb of Alexander the Great." Steven glanced up at Lucia, he didn't know how to react, he left a small excited shout that made Lucia jump, a smile forming on her lips. "Oh goodness heavens, this can't be real, look at this Lucia, can you believe it, this is it, this is Alexander."
"Well, he got himself a good place to rest." Lucia didn't know how to react, she wasn't good at history, she didn't remember who Alexander the Great was or what he had done, but she could see Steven's excitement, so she tried to imitate him.
"I guess that we should open this, right?" Nodding in agreement, Lucia stood beside Steven, their hands placed above the tomb, Steven left an exhale and backed away. "Everything inside me is screaming not to open this thing."
"We kind of need to Steven, unless we want Harrow to win." Lucia took a deep breath in and out, and with her strength and Steven's, they pushed the top of the tomb back. It was heavy, good thing Lucia was here to help Steven, if not he might've pulled a muscle or something.
"Oh god." The first thing she said when her eyes laid on the mummified corpse of Alexander, it had an odor that was unpleasant but easy to get adjusted to. "I hope his spirit doesn't come back to haunt us or something."
"If you're gonna hide it for all of eternity, you'd probably put it in a place where the average looter wouldn't think to look." Steven began talking with his reflection, Marc, was here to listen or guide him even, who knew.
"Perhaps, somewhere underneath him or inside the rolled toilet paper around his body? If I had to go crazily insane." Lucia suggested glancing down at the corpse and back up at Steven.
"You might not be too crazy. Alexander was the voice of Ammit." Steven looked back at Lucia, taking some steps forward. "All right, I'm gonna try something, I'll do something here." Steven placed his hands over Alexander's face, apologizing as he took the bandages off him cracking noises were heard that sent a shiver down Lucia's back, this felt wrong on so many levels.
Lucia could only watch how Steven opened the skull's mouth, his hand down the rotten corpse, the imagery wasn't going to leave Lucia's brain any time, she could look away, but she couldn't do it.
"Do you have it?" Lucia asked hands pressed against her cheeks, her fingertips pressing her ears. Steven pulled out a small statue figure that resembled a crocodile, that was it, they have it.
"Layla, look. We won." Steven showed the figure to the brunette, Lucia smiled widely at the woman, only lasting a few seconds when she realized the expression on Layla's face.
"Is everything okay?" Lucia interrupted Steven's overexcited words, Layla looked at Lucia, her eyes kind, drifting back at Steven, and Lucia noticed darkness overpowering.
"Can he hear me?" Layla asked, her head tilted to the side just a tiny bit, ignoring the oblivious answer of Steven. "What happened to my father?" Layla walked over to them, angrily she stood in front of Steven. "I'm talking to you." Layla pushed Steven back, but all of her words were direct to Marc.
"Come on. Let's go, let's go." The voice had changed, the accent was gone, and Marc had taken over the body, pulling Layla away from the tomb. "We need to go right now." His eyes drifted over to Lucia motioning her with his hand to follow.
Layla wasn't having any of it, she pulled away from his grip, her face showing anger and sadness mixed up, she kept on asking him about her father, Marc wasn't telling her, he just wanted to leave this place, that he would explain things later,
"Did you kill Abdullah El-Faouly?" The word kill made Lucia take a step back, Marc, a killer, he had said he wasn't, that he didn't kill her father, and there was a sincere tone in it, his voice tone never shifted, didn't get high or low when he said it.
This wasn't the place or time to get answers, but Lucia Castro wasn't someone to interrupt a very serious and delicate topic, she just stood back, walked away from the platform, and left the two of them to talk about it, she just waited, she knew that she had to.
"Guys, we have to leave, like right now." Lucia said when she heard distant noises.
"Yeah, they're here." Marc added.
"Come on, let's go." Lucia waved at them, Layla took the first steps, the pair went over and searched for a door or a passage that could take them to an exit, Marc told them to go, that he would hold them off. "Layla, hide, we'll move when they move." Lucia hid behind a pillar again, keeping her vision visible waiting for Harrow's soldiers to be distracted and let them have an easy exit.
Lucia and Layla looked at each other when they heard Harrow's voice, taking a peek Lucia saw the armed guys and Harrow, they couldn't run away, they would have to wait for the right moment. They could see how one of the armed soldiers walked over to Marc, how Marc was quick to attack with a small golden machete, how he took him down, and two others just in seconds.
Then a gunshot followed, Marc's body balancing back, Layla covered her mouth, not letting the gasp be heard, Lucia just looked in shock, her breath was held back, witnessing how Marc was fighting to not lose his life, another gunshot, Marc's body falling down to the water behind him, Lucia held Layla's body back when she noticed how the brunette was ready to stand up and run. It was surreal what she was seeing, it didn't feel like it was happening, it was all like a dream, or maybe it was her denying it, Lucia slowly sat down, she felt dizzy, indeed was dizzy, Lucia closed her eyes and whispered, this isn't happening, she had lost Steven Grant and Marc Spector.
