Prologue: The Girls
If you walked down the street by the old wearhouse, you would see trash lining the sidewalks and smell the stench if human waste.
It was a forgotten area of London. Travelers pretended it didn't exist when recounting their vacations to their friends and the locals ignored it completely. After all, it wouldn't be worth the effort to clean up the area, it was better to just contain everything gross and foul there instead.
But, if you did happen to pass through the area on your shortcut way home, you would see two little girls, hardly older than ten years old, sitting next to each other against the wall along the sidewalk.
Their faces, smeared with dirt they didn't bother to clean off and their clothes were a mish mash of anything they could get their hands on.
Even though they weren't, they looked remarkably like twins. It could have been the matted hair or the sunken brown eyes, but they weren't even related. Just two girls sharing the wealth of the cup laid before them. Every now and then, someone would toss a few coins in, but those occurrences were far and few between.
But as you walked along you would have seen someone approach them. You would be able to see the stranger crouch down and place a handful of coins in their cup and whisper something to them.
You would be able to see their small faces look up, excited. You would be able to see them stand up and follow the stranger.
But, you would not think much of it. You were, afterall, just trying to get home as soon as possible. And it was really none of your business anyway.
