Chase (Canyon) had a barbed tail similar to that of a SandWing from the series entitled Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. 

When I first created him, I wanted to give him a little flare - since he didn't have Light Magic yet. And since he "grew up" in Thorn's arena several times, I had to give him a factor that would have kept him alive in the fighting ring. Though in most of my attempts he never really used it, he threatened enemies and sometimes accidentally poisoned those who got too near to him when he was on high alert.
