Note:
Dictynna was actually a Cretan goddess or nymph and was sometimes mixed up with the goddess Artemis. There was a big Dictynna sanctuary on the Rodoupou Peninsula, which is located in the northwestern part of Crete, and the sanctuary was guarded by dogs in antiquity.
According to one popular myth, Minos, the king of Crete, fell madly in lust with the virgin and pursued her, which led to her taking a leap of faith and jumping into the sea. She was rescued because she ended up in fishermen's nets.

The Minoan eruption really happened and it is quite probable that it took place in the 17th or 16th century BC. It essentially tore Santorini apart and caused a series of earthquakes and tsunamis in the region.

The palace of Knossos existed in reality as well as the priestesses who wore poppies on their head and/or animals, as some of the artifacts found on the island of Crete reveal. King Minos is an entirely different matter though because his reign might be a myth.
