Hunting

-I feel unmotivated to work on requests, so here's another original idea-

"This is stupid." Artemis Rolled her eyes. "Why can't we do normal teenage things? Like go to the movies, or drink slurpies at the park, or something?"

Wally gaped at her. "Artemis, The three of us with no adults! This is a perfect time to get proof he exists!"

"What I don't get if how you can believe in him, but not believe in things like ghosts, or magic! You literally see Zatanna use magic in front of your own eyes every week!"

Dick leaned over the counter, flashing a smile at the confused barista. "He'll have a large apple cider, she wants a medium London fog, and... can I get a medium mocha please?"

"Because Mothman is FLESH AND BONE, Arty! Mothman is scientifically possible!"

"And ghosts aren't?"

"People are staring..." Dick muttered, paying for their coffees and sitting at a table in the little cafe. "So, what's the plan?" Get lost in the woods without any way back to safety?"

"Exactly!"

"That was a joke, Wally." Dick said, concerned.

"And you're sure the league won't know we're doing this?" Artemis asked nervously. Roy and Ollie would never let her live it down if they knew the boys had convinced her to go cryptid hunting.

"Our lie is water tight! Those guys suck at communicating!" Dick assured.

"Besides, magic isn't scientifically plausible." Wally grumbled, refusing to drop the argument.

"Oh, so Zatanna doesn't exist?"

"I never said that! You're strawman-ing me! I've seen Zatanna do things, but it's not magic, it's just manipulating her environment! It's just science we don't understand yet!" Wally through himself back in his chair, unaware of the other, eavesdropping patrons. "If Mothman isn't real, what do you think all those people saw?"

"A Hoax! Tourist revenue! We literally spent all afternoon in gift shops, tourist traps, and taking pictures with the Mothman statue!"

Dick looked up. "Didn't you have fun?"

She sat down. "...yeah."

"Large Apple cider, medium london fog and mocha!"

"See?" Dick got up to retrieve their drinks. "Plus, that merch we got was pretty sweet." He set the drinks down at the table. "I wonder how B would react to my 'Mothman is my top' t-shirt?" He cackled.

"How would agent A react?" Wally countered. That shut him up.

"So what's the plan?" Artemis gripped her drink around the cardboard sleeve, and blew on it softly. Robin always knew their drink orders by heart.

"Well, It's six, so, well grab some dinner, and head over to the wildlife reserve after dark and... see what happens."

"Flashlights?"

"Check!"

"Water?"

"Check!"

"Cameras?"

"Check!"

"Epic teeshirts?" Dick interrupted.

"Check Check Check!" Wally pointed around at the three of them.

"Great, let's get this over with." Artemis grumbled. Pacing down the wide road. "So, which way do we go?"

"Uh..." Dick shrugged, pointing into the forest. "There?"

"Sure."

The three teenagers wadded into the moonlit woods. It was dark under the canopy of leaves, making the teens' flashlights dance across the dry moss. Luckily, even though the sun was long out of sight, the mid-august heat still lingered.

"Do we... split up?" Wally asked quietly.

"Sure." Artemis whispered back. It was quiet in the woods, making the teens almost frightened to speak above a hush.

The three separated, Dick going off down one worn path, trying to keep the others in his eyesight. The first chill of the night struck his bare arms, forcing the boy to shrug off his backpack, and untie the jacket from his waist. sliding the jacket on, along with his back, he continued down the trail, clambering over logs and dodging under prickling branches. The abundance of stinging nettle made him glad he chose to wear jeans.

"Arty! Dick! Guys!" A hushed voice hissed from nearby.  Dick staggered to the nearest clearing, and searched for a deer path towards Wally's voice. Eventually, he just decided to pull up his hood, and force his way through the sharp branches.

"What?" He hissed, as soon as the taller figure came into sight.

"Dude, I totally saw something flit through the sky." Wally turned to face him, eyes wide in their torches' light.

"What?" Artemis shoved her way through the branches next to them. Pulling her hair loose from the grasps of a vicious tangle of invasive blackberry. "What is it?"

"Wally saw something flying." Dick repeated urgently, eyes glued to the sky above the clearing.

"Are you sure it wasn't an owl?" Artemis asked.

"No way, man." Wally shook his head. "That wasn't like any bird I've seen."

"Look!" Dick thrust his finger in the air. The other two turned just in time to see A menacing shape flit across the dark sky.

"No way..." Artemis muttered.

"It's going the other way." Wally said. "It was going the other way before."

"Maybe it's looking for somewhere to land." Dick suggested. They looked around themselves.

"Uh, we're in a place to land." Artmis pointed out. Backing back up Wally's trail several feet.

Wally followed her. "I thought you didn't believe in him!"

"Well I don't, But I know I just saw something." She replied. "And whatever it is, it just saw us!"

"Shh!" Dick hissed against their bickering. "I hear..." He didn't finish his sentence,  eye's locked ahead of him. He saw something.

"What-" Wally stopped, he saw it too.

The three of them stared ahead in dead silence as a great shape moved through the trees. It was big, with what appeared to be long swooping wings tucked behind it. He shifted towards them.

They began backing back up the trail, gripping on to each other. Safety in numbers. Eyes latched on the figure lumbering towards them, they stumbled backwards.

"Go." Artemis whispered in their ears, just as the great creature swung forwards towards them.

The three let out deafening shrieks, stumbling and staggering backwards, stumbling over each other up the deer path. Wally's sneaker caught on something and all three clattered to the dirt. Dick desperately kicked at the earth, trying to pull the other two up quicker.

But not quick enough, the creature was practically upon them. Artemis thrust her hand in her army pants pocket and ripped out their last defence: a disposable camera from the gift shop. With all her courage, she turned on the flash and leaned on the button.

Blinding light filled the clearing as the shutters flitted open and closed. The figure stepped back, raising a glove to cover its eyes.

The teens fought to shove themselves up, when it hit them: They'd never heard of the mothman wearing gloves. Of having a cape.

Dick turned to face the figure, shaking. "Bats?"

Wally raised his flashlight, confirming it.

"Robin." He said sternly.

"What're you doing here?" Dick asked, still not untangling himself from the dirt-covered heap of teenagers.

"When I called Iris West, I was told you two were staying with Artemis. When I called Artemis' mother, what do you think she told me?"

Dick looked down. "But I disabled all my trackers..."

"Come, I'm taking you three home." Bats growled. The kids got up and dusted off.

"So, what we saw before..." Wally began.

"The 'wing looking for a place to land." Dick grumbled. "It all makes sense."

Artemis was surprisingly chipper. "I told you there was no such thing as a mothman!"

"Nope,. Nope, I get it. Our exploration was a bust." Wally murmured. "Let's head back to the batwing. He and Robin slunk down the path after bats.

Rather self satisfied, Artemis began picking up her things, ready to head out. She swung her torch around to head after the boys, when they caught a reflection deeper in the woods. Curious, she focused the beam on the red glare the light had caught.

Without looking away, she focused the beam on it. A tall, broad, darkness. She let out a whisper of a gasp, as the creature flitted away into the darkness.

"GUYS?" She ran out of the woods after them.

"What?" Wally hissed as she ran into his knapsack.

She turned back, her eyes lingering in the dark woods. "...nothing." She murmured. "Cryptids aren't real."
