Chapter 9
1st January, 2145.
Obsidian Waste, Connecticut.
3rd Person POV
Nathan slowly opened his eyes, frowning he'd slept and was still tired. He frowned and rubbed his eyes, which had very noticeable dark circles under them. He sat up from his desk, grumbling.
"Nadia. What time is it?" He asked out loud.
The quantimized technomancer super computer gave him the answer. "12:36 am."
Nathan had been with this thing for as long as he could remember. His grandfather, Riley Pines has first created Nadia when he was seventeen, in 2020. 'The Age of Innovation', Nathan's father, Chase had always called it.
Back then, Nadia was just an algorithm. From 2020, Riley has kept, upgrading her, somehow into a quantimatic program...all the way to the A.I incident in 2090. Then he'd been an old man, and he'd given to Nathan's Dad, who also kept upgrading it. He managed to create a fully operational illegal quantum computer. But he knew he could do more, so he continued upgrading her and he somehow turned her into a technomancer: the first living computer ever. Nathan had given her the name, since all of Chase's kids had names that began with N. Nathan. Nykassa (Nyssa for short). And now Nadia.
"Did it finish?" He asked, scratching his head. Nathan had spent most of his life, wondering how someone with powers like his could live normally. Vybers, as Nyssa christened it, were powerful people. Almost or even stronger than speedsters. And that not only made them dangerous, but also able to unstablize easy.
And then, wonders turned into thoughts. And thoughts can become reality. Nathan wasn't gonna be unstable. Her would be different. He was going to be normal...ish. He turned his head to the corner of the family basement, which he'd turned into a lab. A metallic wristband was beeping, and flashing a green light. He smiled, fully awake and grabbed it off from the separate table, and put it immediately on his wrist. This was going to work. He knew it.
"Nadia, be sure to scan my vitals and-"
"Yes, yes, it's all taken care of Nathaniel. You are so primitive sometimes."
Nathan could've sworn he'd heard a hint of laughter in her tone. She wasn't really a computer computer. He made sure to give her some human attributes and emotions even, by connecting himself to her, literally.
"Sometimes I wish I hadn't programmed you to be so snarky. But I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too." He said grinning.
"But then," Nadia controlled one of the 3D printers and had created a normal Barbie doll for Nathan to test it out on. The process should've taken hours, but she managed to do it in minutes. "what's the point of baking the cake if you aren't going to eat it?"
Nathan paused. "Okay, you got me there..."
He pictured her smiling at him. "Okay, Nads here we go..."
He held his hand out in front of the doll. Normally a blast of blue energy would've done something; rip it in half, disintegrate it, melt it. The possibilities were endless and always unpredictable. But this time nothing happened. Nathan blinked.
"Anything?" He didn't his eyes.
"No levels of energy increasing. No radiation levels either. It seems to have worked Nathan. Good job."
Nathan blinked back tears and did a fist pump. "YES! Hell yes! I actually did it! We did it! Nadia you are amazing!"
The huge flat screen television on the wall which was off, flickered on immediately. A woman's face was on it, someone who weirdly resembled Scarlett Johansson. She smiled down at him. "I thought we already established this."
Nathan laughed. "If you weren't a computer, I'd kiss you. Is the spare one ready?"
Nathan heard a ring and looked to his left, to see the dumbwaiter shaft open and there was an exact replica of the bracelet Nathan wore. He took it up, put it on his other wrist, tested it out on the doll and was ecstatic that nothing happened as well. He took it off and put it in a tiny box. He wrapped it in gift paper, put a bow on it and smiled.
"You think she'll like it?" He asked , and looked up at the screen.
Nadia smiled and nodded at him. "It's the perfect birthday gift. Now go give it to her. And know I'm here to give advice if you need it."
Nathan took a deep breath and ran out of the lab, up the steps to the living room, then up another flight of steps to the first bedroom floor. He went down the hallway, taking a left, walking up another flight of stairs, and was on the second bedroom floor. He walked all the way down to the last door of the hallway and knocked.
"Since when does this house have so many room and stairs?" He thought to Nadia. Her main drive, a small memory card, was actually implanted inside of Nathan's brain. It was illegal to have quants after all. But he couldn't bear hiding her all the time, especially whenever the police came to their house. Most of the time it was because Nathan's experiments kept causing blackouts in the town. All of this was back when Nathan had been putting the finishing touches on Nadia's core system. It had simply been too much to lie to the police every time they searched the house, looking for the quant. So he simply put it in a place where no one would ever look for it.
"Well, first of all this is a mansion, Nathaniel. Not a house. It has three floors of bedrooms, the attic floor, the basement on the negative first floor-"
"It was a rhetorical question." He thought, smiling.
The door opened and Nathan walked into the room. A girl with brown hair like Nathan's own was laying sprawled out on her bed. She looked exactly like Nathan, same brown eyes, dark brown hair. But the only thing was there was a bit of reddish tint in her eyes, from her powers, which was also similar to his own.
She wore a red and black polka dot dress, with a black stocking underneath. Her wavy hair was tied into a ponytail, and she wore a pair of red fingerless gloves. She was staring up at the ceiling, sighing.
"Hey Nykassa."
"Hey Nathaniel." She sat up and made space for her brother to sit down.
Nathan sat down next to her and handed her the box. She raised an eyebrow and held it in her hands, confused. "What's with the box?"
" Happy Birthday. " He said, smiling. Nykassa blinked and hugged him slowly, and put the box aside.
"What's the point Nate? We're never gonna be free from it. We can't be normal anymore. Not that we ever were. And that's all I want. To be normal. These stupid powers get in the way of everything."
Nathan frowned slightly. "Well, why don't you open the box and see what's inside?" He said softly. "Who knows what's inside."
Nykassa sighed and took the box back in her hands and opened it, tearing the wrapping away. As they fluttered to the floor, they disintegrated instantly before actually touching the floor. Nathan observed that curiously. She hadn't done that before. "Nadia, what is that?"
"Molecular distribution and disintegration. It seems Ms Pines' powers are increasing steadily at a slow pace, with each passing week." Nadia informed him.
He focused his attention back to his sister, who gasped and tilted her head when she saw the metal bracelet inside. "What is that?"
Nathan grinned and took it out. "It's a power dampener."
She gasped again and looked at him. "You...you really...?" And as he nodded, tears came to her eyes.
"We might actually have a choice at being normal."
Nykassa held out her wrist and he attached to her, smiling. "It's waterproof right?"
Nathan smiled. "Of course." He activated it and it glowed a brilliant red before switching to light blue and then the light died down. She raised an eyebrow at him. "Oh, it's perfectly normal. It'll blink every once in a while, actually every two minutes, you know to alert you that it's still working."
"How will I know when it stops working?"
" When the red light comes on again and then you hear a hissing and beeping sound. Yeah, then that's bad. It means you're unstable and the bracelet isn't working anymore. "
Nykassa wiped her eyes and hugged him. "You didn't have to do this" Nathan hugged her back and she snuggled into his chest.
"I did have to, Nykassa."
Nykassa shook her head. "Thank you for the best present ever. You're the best brother ever."
" I'm your only brother. " He grinned.
"I love you Nathan." She said, smiling.
"I love you too, Nykassa."
Nykassa looked up at him. "No. It's...just Nyssa."
"Nyssa?...not bad. Nathan and Nyssa..." Nathan kissed her forehead. "Well then I love you too, Nyssa."
