Chapter 5
8th January, 2252.
Living Mirage, Arizona.
3rd person POV
Sabre walked along the pavement of the road, looking straight ahead as she did. School was over. Another stupid day of her stupid fake life gone. She was walking alone as usual, and she found herself walking towards the forest. She shook her head and turned around.
Why was this happening to her every evening? Everyday, she remembered the way to her school, but somehow forgot the way back to her home. It was infuriating for her and she mentally cursed herself.
Something buzzed in her pocket and she pulled out her blue iPhone that was ringing. Her mother was calling her. Sabre glanced at the screen and saw that it was 3:17 pm. Every time she got...well lost, her mother would call her. And each call was exactly at 3:17pm.
She answered and braced herself for her mother's voice. "Hi, Mom." She said, sickeningly sweet.
"Lost again I see?" Came her mother, Katherine Pines' amused and beautiful voice. Sabre tried not to roll her eyes.
"I am not lost!" Sabre hissed at her. "I am just...taking in the view."
Even a blind man could see right through that, Sabre thought. "Really? That's the vest you could come up with?"
Sabre sighed. "What street is it again?"
Katherine's voice seemed to brighten at that. "14 Ripple Street. Red house with blue roof."
Sabre took mental note of the street. I can remember this. Ripple Street, Ripple Street. Yeah. I got this.
"You have have five minutes. Good luck, honey." Katherine laughed sweetly at her and hung up.
Five minutes to search the entire town? Impossible, right? Not really for Sabre. She was a...what was it her mom called it? Metamorphisis? No, that's for Science class. Metabolism? What? That doesn't even make sense! Metahuman? Yes, that's what it was!
Sabre was a metahuman. Sabre wasn't fully sure of what that term meant anyway. But what she did know for sure was that she had powers. Super speed, to be more specific, and she could breathe underwater. How crazy was that?!
Believing she was a metahuman was easier than trying to convince herself that she was normal. Because she obviously wasn't. Sabre sighed and got herself ready to run.
There were so many houses in this town. Hopefully she didn't cross over into the desert. Ready...
Set..
Go! She shot off with the actual speed of a rocket. The world around her seemed to elongate into a colourful blur that was moving behind her. She was running through all the streets, and there was several trails of dust that were the only indication that she'd been there.
Morgan Street. Ruse Street. Riley Terrace. Bath Street? Why would they name a street after a bath? She continued to speed along, searching desperately for her street. She'd been counting. Only 1 minute left.
Then it hit her. She lived on the outskirts of town. Near the lake. She pushed on, and found herself moving faster than normal. She suddenly felt warmer and looked behind her. Blue and white lighting was coming from her back, arms and legs. Her eyes widened with awe and fear. Holy shit, I'm creating lightning?!
A black split level house was seen in the distance, coming closer and closer. Sabre was counting her final seconds, when a super loud roar filled her ears. It made her unfocused and she tripped over a boulder protruding from the ground, and fell.
Katherine was watching the HGTV channel for no reason. Sabre was still out there... As she looked up at the TV which was above the mantle for the fireplace, she heard a series of rattles. The ornaments that were near on the mantle...Katherine got up and sped over to the door, just on time to see Sabre fall.
Sabre had done a series of flips before she came to a stop. She was fine with no broken bones but a lot of bruises and gashes, including a sprained ankle. She wiped the blood from a few scratches on her face wincing. She didn't see her mother move, but suddenly she was all sprawled out on the couch. Wow. Mom is really fast.
Katherine knelt by her daughter's side. She looked exactly like her 14 year old daughter, but a few years older around the age of 20. Most people disbelieved Sabre when she told them Katherine was her mother. But that was simply because their powers stopped them from aging so fast. In fact, it could stop them from aging at all.
"You're actually 10 seconds before time, honey. You did great." She smiled, wistfully. Sabre groaned.
"Yeah right. I got my ass handed to me by dirt."
Katherine rolled her eyes. She didn't mind if her daughter sweared once in a while. Being a metahuman was stressful. "You'll be fine. Speedsters heal rapidly."
Sabre sighed and looked at her mother. The thing that always seemed to surprise her was Katherine's eyes. They were a beautiful shade of blue. But if you looked closely, you'd see that there were little lightning bolts moving around in them. Sabre had the same eyes, just like she shared almost every single physical feature with Katherine. They had the same blonde hair, same skin tone, same eyes, same nose etc. But one for sure, Katherine was waay faster than Sabre.
"Rest up kiddo. And we got to work on your memory problems."
"Who was my Dad?" She asked. Katherine looked relaxed but even Sabre saw through that. Behind that mask her mother constantly wore. She always tensed whenever Sabre asked about him, when she was younger.
"Uh...honey. You need to sleep." Katherine got up and Sabre felt her anger getting the best of her.
"Mom, just tell me. I've been waiting 14 years for an answer from you. And you avoid tell me. Well, I'm done waiting." Sabre glared at her mother's back.
"Sabre...that's enough. Let it go." Katherine said in a dark tone.
"No Mom. You have to tell me who he is! Please that's all I want." She begged.
"Sabre. Stop. Please."
"Well fine. Don't tell me!" Sabre snarled at Katherine. "I'll just find out on my own!"
"Sabre! That's ENOUGH!" Katherine snapped and turned around, her blue eyes blazing in anger. The little white bolts were clearly seen in her eyes, now that hey eyes had turned a darker shade of blue.
She'd never seen her mom this angry or upset before over anything. And that was saying a lot when her favourite team lost the Super Bowl C L IX (Super Bowl 159). Sabre lowered her eyes and felt them watering up.
"Mom please."
"Dors maintenant." Katherine said hastily and snapped her fingers. Sabre somehow understood her mother's French words and found herself drifting off to sleep...
