VERSE 2
The next day at school, I met up with Kent in the cafeteria. We grabbed our lunches and found a table near the window. The sun streamed through the glass, casting a warm glow over our meal as we chatted about our upcoming basketball practice and weekend plans.
As we were finishing up, I noticed Lily and another girl walking toward our table. Lily smiled and waved as they approached.
"Hey, Ja!" Lily called out. "I brought a friend along. This is Jenna."
Jenna was a tall girl with an easygoing demeanor. She gave me a friendly smile as she joined us at the table.
"Hi, Ja," Jenna said. "I've heard a lot about you from Lily. It's great to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too, Jenna," I replied, returning her smile. "How's it going?"
"Good, thanks," Jenna said. "Lily was telling me about the basketball team, and I thought it would be cool to come say hi."
As we chatted, Lily leaned in closer and said, "By the way, I wanted to ask if you could give me your social media handle. It'd be nice to stay connected."
I nodded and quickly gave her my Instagram username. Lily entered it into her phone, and I saw her send me a follow request. Jenna seemed to be genuinely interested in the conversation, but I could sense a hint of curiosity in her eyes.
Kent, who had been listening to the conversation, chimed in with a grin. "Looks like you're becoming quite the popular guy, Ja."
I chuckled. "Yeah, it's been an interesting week."
As we continued chatting, I noticed a girl sitting a few tables away who seemed to be observing us intently. Her expression shifted from curiosity to something else, and I couldn't quite place it. She was someone I'd seen around school but hadn't really interacted with.
Suddenly, she stood up and walked over to our table. Her approach was direct, and she seemed slightly agitated.
"Excuse me," she said, addressing me with a slightly irritated tone. "I couldn't help but overhear. You're really giving out your social media handle just like that?"
I looked at her, slightly taken aback. "Uh, yeah. I guess so. Is there a problem?"
The girl's gaze flickered to Lily and Jenna before returning to me. "It's just... well, I didn't realize you were handing out your info so easily."
Lily glanced at me, a bit taken aback by the sudden confrontation. "Is there something wrong?"
The girl shook her head. "No, it's fine. I just didn't expect it, that's all." She gave a curt nod and walked away, leaving a palpable tension in the air.
As she left, Kent raised an eyebrow and looked at me. "Do you know her?"
I shook my head. "No, I don't. She must be someone from class. Maybe she was just having a bad day."
Lily and Jenna exchanged glances, clearly puzzled by the brief encounter. Lily shrugged it off and tried to steer the conversation back to more positive topics.
"Anyway," Lily said with a smile, "I'm really looking forward to seeing you at practice. It'll be great to have you on the team."
"Definitely," I agreed, feeling a bit of relief as the conversation lightened up. "I'm excited too."
As the lunch period drew to a close, Lily and Jenna said their goodbyes and left the cafeteria. Kent and I remained behind, finishing up our meals and discussing the day's events.
"That was weird," Kent said. "You think she was upset about something else?"
"Maybe," I replied, shrugging. "I don't know. It's hard to say. But I'm not going to let it bother me."
As we left the cafeteria and headed toward our next class, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the girl's reaction than met the eye. But for now, I focused on the positive aspects of the day and looked forward to the upcoming basketball practice.
The next day at school, the atmosphere felt different. As I walked through the hallways, I noticed that Elara—one of the girls who had been in the cafeteria and the one I saw reacting strangely—seemed to be avoiding me. It wasn't just a casual avoidance; it was deliberate. She would quickly change directions when she saw me coming or duck into a classroom to avoid crossing paths.
I shrugged it off at first, thinking maybe she was just having a rough day. However, as the day wore on and I repeatedly saw her dodging me, I couldn't help but feel curious and a bit uneasy.
During lunch, Kent and I sat at our usual spot. I noticed Elara sitting a few tables away, her back turned to us. She was engrossed in conversation with some friends, but every now and then, she would glance over her shoulder, as if checking to see if I was near.
"Hey, Ja," Kent said, breaking my focus. "You've been pretty quiet today. What's up?"
I sighed, glancing in Elara's direction. "Have you noticed that girl, Elara? She's been avoiding me all day. I don't know why."
Kent looked over at her. "I did see her acting a bit weird yesterday, but I thought maybe she was just having a bad day. You think it's something to do with you?"
"I don't know," I said. "She seemed pretty upset about me giving out my social media handle. Maybe she's just uncomfortable about it."
Kent nodded thoughtfully. "It's possible. People can get weird about that stuff. Maybe you should try talking to her and clearing things up."
I considered his suggestion. "Yeah, that might be a good idea. I'd like to understand what's going on."
After lunch, I spotted Elara walking briskly down the hallway, her head down. I gathered my courage and approached her.
"Hey, Elara," I called out gently. "Can we talk for a minute?"
Elara stiffened but turned to face me. Her expression was guarded, and she crossed her arms defensively. "What do you want to talk about?"
"I've noticed you've been avoiding me," I said, trying to sound as non-threatening as possible. "I just wanted to see if everything's okay. Did I do something to upset you?"
Elara's eyes softened slightly, but she still looked uncomfortable. "It's not really about you," she said, her voice low. "I just... I've been dealing with some stuff, and it's been hard to focus on anything else."
I nodded, trying to be empathetic. "I understand. If there's anything I can do to help or if you need someone to talk to, I'm here."
Elara seemed taken aback by my offer. She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Thanks. I appreciate it, but I think I just need some time."
"Alright," I said, giving her a reassuring smile. "If you change your mind or need anything, just let me know."
With that, Elara gave a small nod and walked away. I watched her go, feeling a mix of relief and concern. It was clear that she was going through something, and I hoped that whatever it was, she'd find a way to work through it.
Kent, who had been waiting nearby, approached me. "How did it go?"
"She seemed a bit more relaxed after we talked," I said. "I think she's dealing with some personal issues. I just hope she's okay."
Kent nodded. "Yeah, it's always tough when people are going through stuff. Hopefully, she'll open up if she feels comfortable."
As the day continued, I tried to put the encounter out of my mind and focus on the positive aspects of my life, including the upcoming basketball practice. Despite the unexpected drama, I was determined to stay optimistic and support my friends and teammates as best as I could.
