As my arms flew around like I was conducting a colossal orchestra full of hyped up musicians, I danced away in my own little world. The lack of space around made me feel like I was in an oblong glass bubble, but my mind felt like I was right in the middle of the expanse of life. With closed eyes and an open mind, the rest of my body joined my questionable moves as we danced the night away to Ed Sheeran in concert. We had not come here to resemble statues, we wanted some fun. As my daughters, son in law and I got sucked into the magic of the music, I felt so happy that I could dance like no one was watching.

Dancing to me had always been such a nourishing soul food. A ballerina I am not, but an authentic enthusiast I am. Music and dance should be a staple in the diet of life of every human and non-human being. Raising above choreography critics, dance means so much more than just dancing in your own unique style. Using your body to convey your emotions and to shake off life’s worries, dance connects the artist to the listening ears in other worldly ways.

Having belly danced my way to bliss over the years with veils and swords, I could not imagine life without dancing. Being in the Zumba zone with other beat lovers has always given that coming home feeling that warms any heart. I am always that one sober friend who is dancing in questionable ways on a night out whilst the tipsy look on in bewilderment. There is a time and place for everything and being ever ready to dance wherever you feel like it is always perfect.

When we learn to let go of what other people think and just do our own thing in our own way, we can feel so free. Learning to love our own authentic selves is only as hard as we try and make it. We live with ourselves 24/7 whilst others come in and out of our lives so should we not love the one we will spend the rest of our lives with? For us to lead an entertaining life, we need to first create that entertainment ourselves as we are our only constant in life, so we may as well make it fun.
