Chapter 9

"Hey!"

I rolled my eyes and turned around. Well, this was a first: the volleyball girls were actually talking to me! Joy.

"What do you want Parker?" I asked, tying my shoe.

"My name is Patricia!" She shouted, stomping her foot.

"We just wanted to ask why you've been hanging out with Liam Payne lately." Another girl said.

"What are you talking about?" I replied, playing dumb.

"Don't act dumb. We saw you two together at that yogurt place and at Caroline's party." Parker said.

"Oh that. It's nothing." I shrugged, standing up and trying to walk around them.

 "Look here, Diana." Parker hissed, pointing her grubby little finger in my face. "Don't you dare try anything with Liam."

 "Yeah, Payzer will live on forever!" Another one shouted.

 Payzer? What the actual hell?

 "Girls, come on!" Coach yelled, blowing her whistle.

 ~~~
 "Care to tell me what 'Payzer' is?" I asked, pouring myself some water and sitting down on the couch next to Liam.
 "It was this ship name that the fans came up with for me and my ex, Danielle Peazer." Liam sighed, running his hand over his short hair.
 "Oh. What's a 'ship'?" I asked.
 "A ship?" He laughed. "A ship is when you see two people and you think they would make a good couple."
 I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. Fans had weird terms: Ship, the feels, "asdfghjkl". I mean... what?
 "For example, a lot of the fans think Louis and Harry would make a good couple, so when you combine the names you get 'Larry Stylinson'." He continued.
 "Oh, okay. I get it now." I smiled.
 "Yeah, I'm not quite sure where half these terms even come from." Liam admitted.
 "I'm sorry for the other night." I mumbled, messing with my cuticles.
 "Don't worry about it. If I heard somebody say you were dating some one I would have freaked out too."
 "No, I mean...I'm sorry for the way Sam acted. I really thought he would try to hit you." I said.
 "It's okay. I just want you to be safe." He told me, turning my head to look at him. I felt myself lean in and press a small kiss on his lips.
 "Thank you." I smiled.
 A knock sounded from the door and I tilted my head back and groaned. Really? Somebody had to come knocking, right now?!
 I got up and walked to the door.
 "Yes?" I asked swinging it open.
 "I told you that if you didn't make up with Sam, we would have some serious problems. Welcome to hell." Caroline smirked.
 "What could you possibly do to make my life any worse?" I demanded, getting the sudden urge to punch the shit out of her.
 "I can take away the only good thing in your life." She replied.
 "And that would be?" I asked.
 "Your precious Liam."
 ~~~

 "No, you don't understand. What if she's serious and really does do something?" I asked into the phone, my jaw trembling.

 I don't know why Liam meant so much to me. He was just another guy. If this was a few months ago I wouldn't care about Caroline's threats but Liam is different. Liam is the one guy that was able to see past my horrible personality and rebellious attitude. Liam was the only guy who found a way to open me up and I can't lose that. Not now.

 "Calm down, Di." Ansley said.

 Ansley was my sister. She's in her twenties and hardly comes to visit. She, of course, loves One Direction, despite her age. The only reason I called her was because I knew I could confide in her.

 "Well what am I supposed to do?" I demanded, my hands shaking.

 "Just tell Liam. Wow, I still can't believe you're dating Liam Payne!"

 "Focus."

 "Sorry." She laughed. "But really, it's no big deal."

 "Okay. Thanks Ans. I have to go." I replied. We both hung up and I set my phone down.

 I heard a light noise coming from my window so I walked over to it. I lifted the window up and looked down, a smile spreading over my face.

 "Liam what are you doing?" I giggled, looking around to make sure my parents didn't decide to barge in.

 "Come on." He urged.

 I signaled for him to wait a minute and quickly slipped a gray t-shirt and my dark jeans. I threw on my boots and left my hair falling on my shoulders.

 "Coming." I whispered, locking my door and closing the window behind me.

 I jumped down from the tree and landed on my feet.

 "I thought you were going to fall for sure." Liam laughed, grabbing my hand and pulling towards his car parked across the street.

 "Have some faith in me you ass." I smiled, following him and climbing in the front seat. "Where are we going?"

 "You'll see."

 ~~~
 "The sunflower field?" I asked, as we pulled into the vacant parking lot and walked for the flowers.
 "Yeah. I like it here." Liam sighed.
 My phone buzzed and I pulled it out of my pocket.
 "Shit, that's my mom." I groaned.
 "Do you have to go?" He asked, the desperation clear in his voice.
 "Yeah." I answered, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek before running back to my house.
 I made it there in about seven minutes (I guess that's what running track gets me), and scaled the tree. I slipped inside my window, unlocked my door and flipped down onto my bed.
 "Diana?" My mom called, opening my door.
 "Hey." I said, pretending to scroll through my phone.
 "When did you...?" She asked, trailing off and looking around.
 "You're losing it." I mumbled, shaking my head.
 "Anyway, somebody is here to see you."
 I nodded and waited for her to bring them up.
 "Hey." He whispered.
 No. No, this was not happening. I've been having a wonderful day and I swear to God if he ruins it...
 "Diana, can we talk?" He tried again, noticing that I wasn't going to answer.
 I put my phone down and grabbed my sketch pad off my desk. I flipped it to a new page and drew the first thing that came to my head: Liam. I tried to focus on the picture but my eyes kept getting more and more blurry with each line.
 "Diana, pl-"
 "No!" I shouted. "Do you even realize how much you hurt me? You humiliated me in front of all those people and if Liam hadn't shown up I don't know what I would've done. I thought you were the person who was saving me from drowning but maybe you're the one who pushed me in."
 Sam sat there, a look of sadness clear across his features. "I wanted to apologize." He whispered.
 "No. Not this time. Go and be with Caroline, in the popular crowd, where you belong." I told him.
 "But-"
 "You know, I don't even know why I thought this friendship would ever work." I laughed. I probably sounded crazy but I didn't care.
 "Hey, your mum let me-..." Liam started, opening the door.
 "What are you doing here?" I asked, wiping at tears I didn't even know had fallen.
 "I came to check on you. You left in such a rush." He answered.
 "Left where?" Sam asked.
 "Our date." Liam replied.
 And that was when all hell broke loose.
