Chapter 15
"Diana!"
I blocked out the yelling while I continued to repeatedly punch Caroline. She was covering her face with her small hands and letting out small whimpers.
"Stop!" The voice yelled again, pulling me off of her.
I swung at the person carrying me away and tried to keep hitting Caroline.
"Look at me!" The person demanded, turning me around.
"Just let me hit her!" I exclaimed, pushing him away from me, and still not looking at his face.
"No. Stop it, now." He said, turning my head and making me look at him.
"Liam." I sighed, crossing my arms.
He looked over at Caroline but continued to stay with me. I tried to look away from him but I couldn't.
"Why did you attack her?" He asked.
"Because she spilled your little secret." I replied, pushing him back with my hands and walking towards my dorm.
"Diana, wait!" Liam shouted, following me.
"Why can't you just leave me alone?" I asked, not looking at him.
"What do you mean by our 'little secret'?" He persisted, grabbing my shoulder.
I shook him off and begged the tears not to come. I not even really sure why I'm crying over guys anymore. I don't know why I still give Liam the damn time of day.
Just keep walking and he'll go away.
"Just tell me." He said as I pulled out of his grip and opened my door.
I walked inside and continued the silent treatment. Unfortunately, he followed me inside. By now, I knew that if I didn't close the door behind me, somebody would see us standing in the same room, and take some kind of picture or tweet about it.
"Come on, Diana! I obviously don't know what you're talking about-"
"You two were hooking up! You both went, behind my back and dated. I had to find out from her when I was going to see you. I actually wanted to see you! I thought the reason you tried to kill yourself, was because of me. Speaking of, how the hell are you out of the hospital?" I yelled, taking his wrist in my hand to examine his wounds.
"I'm not dating her." He answered, pulling his sleeves to cover the cuts.
"Well, I'm getting you back to the hospital now." I sighed, taking my keys out of my pocket.
Liam tried to resist as I pushed him out the door, but gave up after I closed and locked the door behind me. We passed a student helping Caroline up on our way out, and she pointed me out to the student.
"Oh my God, it's true! Diana and Liam." The girl said, quickly snapping a picture.
I pulled Liam faster through the parking lot as more and more students saw us together. The closest I had ever come to a mobbing was at the yogurt place and even that was only ten girls. A few girls tried to grab Liam as we pushed our way through the growing crowd of kids. I finally saw the back of my car and got behind Liam as he climbed in.
"What the hell?" I asked, honking the horn.
"Just start backing up. They'll leave." Liam mumbled, sinking down into his seat.
I felt bad for him. I mean, I hadn't even thought to ask him the reason behind his attempted suicide. It probably seemed as if I didn't care and now, all I cared about was getting myself away from the crazed college kids.
"I'm sorry." I said, resting my head on the steering wheel at the red light.
"For what?" He replied, bringing his brown eyes to my face.
"I know it seems like I don't care, but I do. I care so much it hurts and I'm sorry for not asking. I'm sorry for pushing you away from me and trying to distance myself from you. I'm sorry for not facing my feelings and lying to you when I said I didn't have feelings for you because I do." I whispered.
"You don't have to apologize. I understand, and I didn't even think to ask you why you never asked. All I cared about was getting to see you and telling you...telling you that-"
"Mr. Payne! Thank God, you're back." A nurse shouted, yanking open the car door and pulling him out. "You weren't supposed to leave until tomorrow....and who is this young lady?"
"I'm-"
"Because only family is allowed." The nurse continued, cutting me off.
"But I'm his girlfriend! Can I please come in?" I whined, lying to the annoying woman.
"Well, okay. If anyone asks just tell them that Angela let you through." Angela told me, winking and allowing Liam to walk with me.
"Girlfriend?" Liam teased.
"Shut up." I giggled, bumping his shoulder.
"I guess we'll go to the front desk and tell them we're checking back in." He said, walking to the big desk in the middle of the room.
"Liam Payne is checking back in." I told the skinny teenager working the desk.
"Oh my God, you're Diana right? So it's true." The girl smiled, revealing her pink braces.
"Yeah whatever, can we please check in?" I answered.
The girl scrolled through some computer profiles and then waved us past, obviously annoyed with my attitude. We walked in silence down the white halls until we reached his room.
"What happens now?" I mumbled, taking a seat by his bed.
"I don't know." Liam replied, sitting on his bed.
"Hey sweetie, I'll be in soon to check up on you. Just make yourself comfortable." A southern lady said, sticking her head in the room.
Liam nodded and rested his head in his hands. I waited for him to say something, as I looked at my chipping black nail polish.
"What I was going to say earlier was that, I'm still...I'm still in love with you." He told me, averting my stare.
I didn't say anything in reply, I just sat and tried to process my thoughts. I couldn't separate any thoughts from each other; everything was just jumbled together. I sighed and pressed my pointer fingers into my temples. Finally, I picked apart my ideas and found one that my heart agreed with.
"I...I think I'm in love with you too."
Liam didn't speak, he only leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. It was a feeling I had been craving since he left and now, it was being satisfied.
