Chapter 13
"Is it on?" I called, hanging up a shirt in my closet and waiting for Caroline to reply.
"A few more minutes." She answered.
I was nervously awaiting Liam's interview...all I could hope for was that he tells them it's not me. If I start getting shit from the girls on campus, I will slap a hoe...most likely Caroline.
"It's on." The ho-...Caroline said.
I walked into the living room and say down on the couch. Caroline turned up the volume as Liam came on stage and the crowd went wild. My heart thudded excitedly in my chest at his image but I told myself to calm down.
"Liam Payne. Welcome." The interviewer smiled. I instantly hated her golden hair, and perfect smile.
Bitch.
"Hello Carly. It's so nice to be here." Liam replied.
The way his eyes lit up and he pushed back his hair killed me.
Wait...what the hell is wrong with me? I need to stop and breathe because there's no way in hell I'm fangirling over Liam Payne. Especially not after our past together.
"Okay, so I'm pretty sure we all know the reason you're here." Carly laughed, tucking her long hair behind her ears.
"Yes, I'm pretty sure we do." He said, his brown eyes shining under the harsh lighting.
"Well tell us! Who is 'Diana'?" She pushed. I hated the way her eyes shone with the desire for more gossip and lies.
"I'm not sure if she would want me to say."
"Damn right I don't." I scoffed as if he was listening.
"Liam, it's the main reason you're here." Carly told him, resting her tiny hand on his leg. I felt my face redden at the affection she was showing him.
"I don't know." Liam mumbled, tapping his feet. It was his nervous habit.
"Is this girl Diana?" She demanded as a picture of me flashed on screen.
"That is not a good picture." Caroline said under her breath.
"Not in the mood." I warned.
Liam sat there, obviously not knowing how to answer, as the viewers chanted his name. Even sweet little Carly started chanting. How nice.
"Yes. It is, but I'm only telling you all this so that maybe one of you can help me contact her." Liam said.
"Oh my God." I groaned, as Caroline picked up her phone. "Oh, there's no way in hell you're doing what I think you're doing."
"I am." She smiled, jumping up and running to the bathroom.
I chased her until I heard the door lock and then I knocked over a lamp from her desk.
"Looks like we have our first caller." Carly laughed. My God, her laugh was so fake.
Lord...help Liam.
"Hello?" Liam asked.
"Hi, Liam? It's Caroline Summers...Sam's ex." Caroline replied.
"Oh yes, the girl who tormented Diana?"
"I'm different now."
"Whatever."
It was really special to me that Liam was defending me in front of everyone...and the fact he was calling out Caroline was just the icing on the cake.
"Do you have any idea where she is?" Liam sighed, giving up on his argument.
I heard a loud knock come from my door so I got up to answer it. When I opened the door, I smiled at the person standing there.
"Mandy thank God, we have got to get ou-"
"Look Diana, you're really cool and everything but I don't know if I can handle girls hating me too because I'm friends with you." Mandy told me.
"Woah, woah, woah. Slow down. Who hates me?" I replied.
"Everyone will once your train wreck of a roommate tells." She said, her brown eyes fiery.
"Well I can't help it if she tells." I snapped.
"Whatever. I knew this wouldn't work. You can keep that stupid ass idiot for a roommate for all I care." She sneered, turning and walking off.
"Shit!" I yelled, slamming the door and stalking back towards the couch.
"You heard straight from Diana's roommate: she's at NYU. Send us tips and don't forget to follow Liam on Twitter." Carly smiled, winking at the audience.
~~~
"Caroline, I'm going out." I said...not that I owed her an explanation.
"Can you pick up first? This place is a mess." She replied, grabbing an empty solo cup and tossing it back down.
"I'll do it later." I told her, grabbing my jacket.
"You'll do it now." She answered, grabbing my sleeve and pulling me back inside.
"No I won't!" I shouted, ripping free of her grasp and marching out of the door.
Who does she even think she is? She's my roommate for God's sake, not my mother. I never signed up for any of this crap...hell, I didn't even sign up to be Caroline's roommate!
"Oh my God. There she is, Penny." A girl hissed as I walked by.
"Excuse me!" The girl, who I assumed was Penny, called.
"What?" I asked, turning around.
"Can we get a picture with you?" Penny replied, flipping her black hair over shoulder.
"Why?" I answered. All I wanted to do was go to the damn grocery store, but oh well.
Another minute of my time talking to these idiots and losing brain cells can't hurt, right?
Wrong.
"We want everyone to know we got to meet the real Diana." The first girl said, smiling.
"I really have somewhere to be." I told them, turning back around.
"It'll take two seconds!" Penny shouted.
"Fine." I huffed, walking over to them and getting in the picture.
"Thanks girl. Maybe we can get together?" The first one suggested.
"I don't think so." I replied.
At this point, I had forgotten what I was going to do, so I started walking back towards my dorm. As much as I hated being around Caroline, all I wanted to do was lay in my bed and think.
Not necessarily about Liam but about...well everything. I left Sam to live all alone in Atlanta, Lucas was back in the military, Caroline was back in my life and nothing was going the way I planned. Couldn't I have just finished college, dyed my hair back it's original color and have maybe two kids? Is that too much to ask?
I walked back into the dorm and Caroline was nowhere to be seen.
Thank God.
I laid down in my bed and opened the book Liam left at my house a few months ago. I hadn't looked at it much because all it did was remind me of him, and that was hard for me to handle. This time, I found the courage to open it and found myself reading the notes marked beside the words, and the phrases highlighted.
I smiled where he marked my name by one line. It said something about how people can change but they choose not to.
Yep...that was spot on. I think I even told him once that I didn't believe people could change. I mean look at Caroline: she claimed she had changed and she's right back to being a raging bitch.
I light knock sounded from my door so I sat up and put Liam's book down. I slowly walked to the door and pulled it open.
"Hi."
"Oh my God. What the hell are you doing here?" I asked, looking around in the halls. "If anybody sees you here I'll get nothing but crap the next few weeks."
"I wanted to see you. When I heard you were here I came as soon as possible." He told me.
"You can't be here." I said, biting back tears.
"Diana, please." He begged.
"No. I'm sorry, Liam." I sighed, closing the door in his face.
~~~
Aw...
That was sad.
