Chapter 12
*ONE YEAR LATER*
"Please be safe. I can't stand the fact you're moving away." Sam said, giving me a hug.
"I'm just going to college I'll be back in a few years." I laughed.
You will be happy to know that, yes, I did keep my purple hair. And yes, I'm moving to New York and will be attending NYU.
"I'll be in Atlanta though. We'll be too far away. I can't live without my best friend."
"Distance will make our bond stronger." I replied, rolling my eyes.
"Whatever." He smiled.
"Come on Diana...we have to get you on your plane." My mom told me, grabbing my last suitcase and loading it in the car.
"Love you Sam." I said, giving him one last hug and walking towards my car.
"Love you too, Di." He answered, and with that my mom closed her door and drove off.
~~~
"Diana Richardson?" I asked the lady at the front desk.
"Ah yes Miss...Richardson." She said, judgmentally staring at my hair and clothes. "Dorm 78B."
"Thanks." I growled, taking my key. "Oh and if you have a problem with me, open your damn mouth and say so."
She looked taken aback when I swiveled back around, a smile plastered on my face. I've still got it.
I pressed the elevator button and waited for it to come down.
I could only imagine who they stuck in the dorm with me. She was probably a goody-goody with perfect grades, the perfect boyfriend and everything else freaking perfect.
"Hi. Can I take this one up with you?"
I turned around and almost started laughing at the girl who shared the same taste in clothes as me and had blue and green hair.
"Of course." I smiled.
"Did the lady at the desk give you looks too?" She asked stepping in the open elevator behind me.
"Yeah! What's her problem?" I replied.
"No idea. I'm Amanda by the way." She told me.
"Diana." I said.
"Really? My sister likes that band...Wrong Direction? And they have a song called 'Diana'." Amanda laughed.
I felt my stomach drop with the elevator at the mention of my name and One Direction in the same sentence.
Liam didn't...he wouldn't.
"You okay?" She asked, bringing me back into the present.
"Yeah I'm fine. What room are you in?" I answered, trying to free myself of any thoughts involving Liam.
"79B."
"I'm 78B...I was really hoping to room with you." I groaned. There was no doubt: I was going to be stuck with a GG.
"I hope I'm not stuck with some perfect blonde girl who has a perfect life." She scoffed, rolling my eyes.
"That's exactly what I was thinking. You have to let me know how bad your roommate so we can request to room together." I laughed, getting off the elevator as it came to a stop.
"Definitely. I'll let you know." She smiled.
"Bye Amanda." I called, unlocking my door.
"Call me Mandy." She said, going in her own room.
I smiled and opened my door. The bathroom door was closed and someone's stuff was set up neatly on one of the beds. I set my stuff down on the other bed and listened to the radio that was playing quietly:
"Good afternoon New York. Z100 is playing 'Diana' by One Direction! Enjoy."
Oh my God.
"I love this song!"
Oh no. That voice was all too familiar.
I turned up the radio and tried to ignore who I thought I heard through the bathroom door.
How could someone not miss you at all?
I never would mistreat you.
I'm not a criminal.
"I speak a different-...Oh my God..."
"What the hell are you doing here?" I hissed, covering my face.
"I was in this room first!"
"Caroline, you knew I was going here. Why didn't you say anything?" I demanded, grabbing my stuff.
"Where are you even going?" Caroline asked, following me to the door.
"I'm requesting a different dorm." I mumbled, walking out the door and slamming it behind me.
"GG?" Mandy laughed, noticing my arms loaded with my bags again.
"Even worse: old high school enemy." I groaned.
"You can put your stuff in my room. I'm headed to a party." She told me.
"Sounds good." I smiled, following her to her room.
~~~
"Hey baby." A guy slurred. "Want to dance?"
"No thanks." I laughed, pushing his shoulder and causing him to stumble to the floor.
Mandy and I leaned on each other's shoulders, tears forming in the corners of our eyes as we laughed.
"I think it's time I turn in for the night." I yelled over the music.
"No stay for one more song!" Mandy insisted, pulling me onto the dance floor.
"Fine!" I laughed.
We waited for a new song to start but when it did it wasn't the song I was expecting.
"This was the song I was talking about!" She shouted.
"Oh...cool!" I replied, dancing with her to the beat of the music.
"Diana! Let me be the one to..." Mandy sang, sipping her beer.
I couldn't take it anymore. I told Amanda I was going to the bathroom as I slipped away from the crowded dance floor.
Once inside the small room I stared at myself in the mirror and wiped away the sheer layer of sweat on my forehead.
The music was booming and I could hear from within the bathroom. I felt my stomach contract so I quickly leaned over the toilet and emptied the contents of my stomach.
This was all too much. I needed to talk to Liam, and soon. This song was a step too far even for him and it was slowly breaking me down. It was making me want to be with him more.
"Diana!" Mandy shouted, pounding on the door. I flushed the toilet and wiped my mouth before opening the door.
"I'm ready to go." I told her, walking back towards the door.
~~~
"Bye Diana!" Mandy slurred from across the hall.
As much as I didn't want to, the lady at the front desk told me I was stuck with Caroline for the semester. I could request a different dorm during the second one.
"Diana? Is that you?" Caroline asked, opening the door.
"Yeah and I would appreciate it if you moved." I said, pushing past her.
"Are you drunk?" She replied, closing the door.
"Well I was...until I threw up." I shrugged, changing into some running shorts and a big t-shirt.
"Do you want some Advil?"
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I demanded, turning around.
"I've changed, Diana. A lot. My parents sent me to therapy and I'm a different person now." She answered, tossing me the bottle of medicine.
"Whatever." I mumbled, swallowing the small capsules.
"Oh my God." Caroline whispered, turning up the volume on the T.V..
"What?" I asked, sitting down in a cushy chair.
"They're talking about you."
A picture of Liam and somebody that looked like me flashed on the screen with the caption "Diana?" underneath.
"The purple haired beauty Liam was rumored to be dating last year, is now thought to be 'Diana'. Liam will be coming in for an interview tomorrow to confirm these suspicions."
Oh my God...why is this happening to me?
"All I have to say is good luck. If Liam tells that reporter guy it's you, you'll be all anyone is talking about on and off campus." Caroline said, turning the T.V. back down.
"Yeah thanks. I'll think I'll be going to bed now." I sighed, walking to the small bed and trying to go to sleep.
