Chapter 1

"Diana?" My mom called.

"Diana, come on!" My father echoed.

I don't care if they call me for hours I'm not going down. I rolled my eyes as my family continued to call me.

"Di?" My sister poked her head through my door.

"Yeah?" I sighed, giving in to the endless calling of my name.

"Mommy and Daddy want you to come downstairs and meet our new neighbors." Cassidy said, twisting a piece of her long brown hair around her small finger.

"Tell them I said I'm busy." I absentmindedly told her. I tried to focus on the picture I was sketching but I kept getting distracted by the birds outside.

I wish I was a bird. I could fly a away from this hell that is my life. I could visit anywhere I wanted, resting when I need to. If only life was that easy.

I balled up my current sketch of a garden full of flowers and opened my window. I leaned my chair back on it's back legs and stuck the pencil in my mouth. I picked a tree to draw and got started.

I spend hours drawing. Some girls like to sing or dance but I've always drawn.

I also like music. Music is my only escape when life throws a curveball at me. Even though I can't play music or sing worth a damn it speaks to me. No matter where I am or who I'm with I can always depend on music.

My door clicked open and I whipped around to see who it was. "Sam?" I whispered.

Sam was my best friend. He was always there for me no matter what. We met in seventh grade when he had a crush on me, but after I rudely declined him we formed a friendship.

"Sorry. I saw your window open and figured you'd be up." Sam smiled. Sam had one of those smiles that made girls swoon; crooked yet perfect.

"Where are my parents and sister?" I asked, putting down my sketch pad and pencil.

"I saw their car and somebody else's car leave about ten minutes ago." He replied, falling onto my bed.

"So what's up?" I sat next to him and pushed my hair away from my face.

"Nothing much. I just thought you'd be up for an adventure." He smirked, his green eyes shining with life.

"What kind of adventure?" I questioned, narrowing my eyes at him.

"Do you trust me?" Sam asked.

"Not really." I giggled, my purple hair falling into my face.

"Come on." He replied, standing up and offering me his hand. I grasped it and he pulled me to my feet.

I looked down at my outfit: a simple white, v-neck, t-shirt with black shorts. I decided to change into jeans since we would probably be taking Sam's motorcycle. I grabbed a pair of ripped jeans and changed in the bathroom.

"Hand me my boots." I called to Sam as I walked out. He tossed me my short black leather boots and I slipped them on. I got my hoodie off the back of my chair and followed Sam to his bike.

"I have to admit Sam, this is beautiful." I said, walking towards the lake.

Sam didn't say anything as he followed me, his hand in his pockets. We sat down on the bank of the lake and watched as the sun set behind the tree line. It would make a beautiful picture.

"You know Caroline?" Sam asked, startling me from my thoughts.

"That bitch who's hated me since second grade? Yeah I know her." I replied rolling my eyes. I tossed a rock in the still water, causing ripples to shoot through it.

"I asked her out." He mumbled.

"Wait what?"

"Yeah I mean I've liked her for a while now and she's changed." Sam defended.

"Sam are you kidding me? She started a rumor that I kissed dogs in fourth grade. She's the one who loosened the screws on my chair so that when I sat down it broke. You can't trust her." I sighed, running a hand over my violet hair.

"I'm sorry but it's happening okay?" He told me, pulling at his dark blonde hair.

Even though Sam and I were best friends we were totally different people. Sam was popular; captain of the soccer team, dated the cutest girls, had the best grades. I, on the other hand, hung out with the outcasts. I was on the volleyball team but I didn't get talked to. My grades sucked and the last guy I dated overdosed.

"I'm going home." I mumbled, getting up and starting to walk down the gravel road.

"I can take you back." Sam called, chasing after me.

"Why don't you take Caroline." I spat.

"God you're so stubborn!" He yelled kicking his bike.

I continued to walk, even after he sped past me. It took us 30 minutes on his motorcycle so I should be home in an hour.

Sam and I argued a lot. We argued about food, what movie to watch, who he was dating or even the fact that I wanted to pierce my belly button.

I was about halfway there when the rain started. It was soft at first and it came down hard. The wind kicked up and slanted rain blew into my face and body.

I heard a car pull up beside me but I didn't want to see who it was.

"Diana, get in the car." Sam demanded, driving slowly alongside me.

"I'm fine." I said, crossing my arms.

I heard the car stop and the door open. Soon, Sam had picked me and started back towards the car.

"Sam! Sam put me down!" I screamed.

When he put me in the car I sat there in silence, glaring at him.

"Di, I'm sorry." He sighed. "I screwed up."

"I can't stand to be around her." I told him.

"Look, if you give her a chance and you still don't like her then I'll break up with her." Sam replied, wiping some water off his jacket.

"Deal." I agreed.

"Hey Diana! Wait up." Sam jogged up beside me.

"Yeah?" I asked, closing my locker.

"Sit with me at lunch okay? You can meet Caroline." He told me.

"Sam..." I whined, trailing off.

"Please Di? I need you there." He replied.

"Fine. I'll see you then." I gave in. Sam gave me a hug and then walked to class. I walked into my English class and sat down next to one of my friends, Isabel.

Isabel was an outcast like me. She had long blonde hair with blue tips and dark brown eyes.

"Hey Diana." Isabel greeted me.

"Hey Is." I smiled, taking out my textbook.

"Good morning class. Please turn to page 72 and finish the chapter." Mrs. Gray said.

Only an hour until lunch.

"Over here Diana!" Sam called.

I braced myself as I walked over to where he was sitting. As usual he was sitting with the populars: Ali Hemmen, Brian Medows, Kayla Edwards etc.

"Hey Sam." I smiled tightly, sitting down. "Caroline." I nodded.

"Hi Diana! It's so awesome of you to eat with us." Caroline replied, flashing me her devilish smile.

"How have you been?" I asked, not really giving a damn how she's been.

"Great! I'm glad you decided to give me a second chance." She simpered, tossing her light brown hair over her shoulder.

"Yeah. It was hard considering all the shit you put me through." I coldly said.

"Diana." Sam hissed. If looks could kill I'd be dead.

"No she's right." Caroline agreed, her blue eyes icy.

"Yeah Sam. I'm right." I said, looking at him.

The rest of lunch passed without much activity. I gave Caroline the occasional bitchy comment and she just agreed. It wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be. She was almost...nice.

"Hello Diana." My mom said as I walked through the door.

"How was school?" My father asked.

"It was actually a living hell. Sam-"

"We have guests." My mom added, cutting me off.

"Oh?" I replied, walking into her living room.

"This is Mr. and Mrs. Payne." She told me.

"Nice to meet you." I said, shaking their hands.

"You too dear. Interesting....hair choice." Mrs. Payne stated. I felt my hand fly self-consciously up to my hair.

"Yes. Diana can be rebellious." My father chuckled.

"Anyway. You know of Liam Payne right?" My mom asked.

"Sure." I replied.

"Well these are his parents." She told me.

You've got to be freaking kidding me.
