43. He Belives In Us

"Okay, you have so much to tell me," Jiah jumped onto the couch and patted the spot next to her, "You better spill right now."

"Jiah," he said lowly, joining her on the sofa but pulling out Hoseok's phone from his back pocket first, "I need to show you this."

She furrowed her eyebrows, fingers twitching as she went to hold the device.

"What's this?" she asked and stared at it for a few seconds before a gasp left her mouth. "It's Hoseok's, isn't it?"

"Yeah," he pursed his lips to keep them from trembling, "I found it at the restaurant."

"What?"

"That room you shoved us into when you saw Scar, that was like some sort of storage space. They had boxes and boxes of stuff; this was in the box labelled 'Scar'."

"Well," biting her lip, she looked down at the phone again, "Have you looked in it?"

He nodded.

"Did you find anything?"

Unlocking the phone, he went to the messages page, opening up their group messages.

And there it was, a message in the bottom right with the text 'Unable to Send. Try Again'.

1984186

"The heck?" she exclaimed, gloss forming over her eyes just as he knew would happen. "He tried to send us a message before he died? He trie-"

"I'm sorry Jiah, I didn't want to make you like this," he reached out, arm hanging around her shoulders as he pulled her into his chest, "I don't even know what this means, it might not even be an S-O-S message, it's probably some random code he wanted us to solve in our leisure. He knows we're not smart enough for this."

She sighed, taking the phone in her hand, staring at the seven digits.

"What is it though? It's just seven digits, not even long enough to be a phone number or a date."

"Should we try breaking it down?"

"The eighteenth of the sixth month in 1984?" Jiah suggested, and they both shook their heads.

"Hoseok always wrote the month with two digits."

"I literally can't think of anything else, Jungkook," her voice was beginning to rise, and he heard the frustration.

"Jiah, we'll get there, just breathe, don't bla-"

"Wait," she jumped up suddenly, walking over to their desk where Hoseok's laptop lay, "Did you say 1984?"

"Yeah, the first four digits could be a year but what even happened in 1984-"

"George Orwell," she let out as she continued to turn his laptop on and type his passcode.

"Huh?"

"George Orwell wrote a book called 1984."

His eyes grew wide, joining her at his computer, "Okay, but what about it?"

"Could the next three digits be a page number?"

"My God- Jiah, that's smart!"

She scoffed, "Why do you say that like you're surprised?"

He liked the little change in the atmosphere, "So what's on page 186?" he asked, nudging her to turn back to the computer.

Sitting down in the chair, she typed the page number into the finder.

And like that, it was like they had time travelled, all the way back to when Hoseok was here. As if he was sitting at the same laptop and was typing out a letter, for whoever was going to find it.

Jiah, Jungkook, I hope this letter finds you well.

Firstly, I'm sorry I haven't told you the truth. I'm sorry that I thought it would have been better for all of us if you guys didn't know what was really happening. That night you were attacked, Jiah, they thought you knew, and that's when I realised that even when I thought I was protecting you both, I was still putting you guys at risk.

The fact that you're reading this means it's too late, and that I wasn't able to fix anything. I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you guys had to go through all this in the dark, without me telling you what was happening. But if I'm gone, you both need to know.

Kkangpae is harvesting organs now. It's a fairly new business for our gang, but they've been kidnapping girls and planning on taking their organs without their consent. It disgusts me thinking about it, especially knowing my brother was involved.

I was able to free some of the girls he was assigned to transport, but what's to say there aren't many more?

Our mission was simple from the beginning; killing Jung Hyungsik. But you definitely shouldn't let that happen, guys. Jung Hyungsik has been trying to stop the gang's business of organ harvesting even before they started when it was just an idea. He was so strongly against it that our boss has been trying to kill him for so long. But he's a smart guy; he's been able to escape, flee the country, put obstacles in the way in order to stop them.

Listen to me, our gang might cloud our judgement, but there's a line we cannot cross. Jung Hyungsik knows where that line is, and you need to as well.

You cannot kill him. You need to work with him to get out of this.

Another thing, Jiah, if you aren't careful... you're going to be next. I'm not too sure if you've figured it out already, but your blood is extremely rare, and our Boss has the same blood type as you. He's dying, and he's dying really fast. He has no time to look for another person to replace his organs with, once your mission is 'complete' you're not going to have enough time before he runs after you.

Please be careful.

I think they've found out that I've talked to Jung Hyungsik, and that I know what's going on. I think they know I want to take my brother far, far away from this all and that I wish to just to live a normal life.

But, no matter how far we run, this life follows us. We can't escape, and I'm terrified that I won't be able to.

If you're reading this, that means I wasn't able to, but that's what I expected.

At least I tried right?

We all know this stupid crap is for life, but let's make sure we don't cross the line.

Because for us, the line is thinner and so, so much closer.

Words cannot express how much I love both of you; how much I want you two to be happier.

Never stop being who you are.

Never forget me, I know it might be hard, but I would love to see that I'm alive in at least someone's memory.

Live your lives, guys.

Live for yourself.

I believe in you both.

I love you guys with all my heart,

Hoseok

By the time the pair finished reading, they had turned to look at each other. It wasn't long before the mist in their eyes turned into full-fledged tears, the aching sadness biting at them so profoundly that it turned into anger. They were already mad about his death, but now that they knew Kkangpae did it, now that they knew Hoseok was killed all because he was trying to do a good thing. The words found homes in their minds, pumping in their veins along with their blood, blending with the oxygen in their lungs and fueling the fire that was burning in the pit of their stomachs.

"I really am going to kill them," Jungkook muttered under his breath

"Where does that leave us, Jungkook?" Jiah's lips were trembling and, with one look at her, Jungkook found himself ready to punch a wall. He loved that she wasn't afraid to show her vulnerable side to him, but at the same time, he hated that it made him want to crush everything that made her that way.

"I don't know, Jiah."

"Does that mean we just wait? We just watch the world pass by and do nothing? Because there's nothing we can do."

"There is though, Hoseok said to-"

"He said to what? Stop the organ donations? Jungkook, you think we can do that? Stop our boss? Stop the man who's been running this mafia shit for forty years? I'm sorry to break it to you, honey, we can't."

"Don't call me honey," his eyebrows furrowed as he let the words sink in. We can't.

"Hoseok said to."

"He did but-"

"He said he believes in us," Jiah turned to look at him, and that's when she realised his eyes were trained at the laptop screen, "He believes in us."

"Jungkook-"

"We can't let him die for nothing, Jiah. We need to continue what he started; we need to do this."

"It'll be impossible, Jungkook. They're way too powerful, they-"

"He said it himself, the man we were ordered to kill has been trying to do it for so long. We just need to help him, and hope we don't get caught-"

"And killed."

He nodded, "And killed."

"But, fuck," Jungkook walked over to the couch in two strides, slumping into it, "If they found out about Hoseok and Seokjin trying to leave," he started, "Do you think they know about Diamond and Saturn?"

Jiah's head snapped in his direction, "Why would you say that? Why would you even think that?"

"I don't know, just doesn't hurt to be prepared," he sighed, "You know if they found out we told them, if they found out you're dating Diamond, they're dead, right?"

His words echoed in her mind, creating a nest and were refusing to leave. They're dead. Their boss wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet through both their heads if he knew.

And, while she had already known the gravity of her choices, after Hoseok's letter and realising all that was happening, all her insecurities about loving Taehyung came back to haunt her.

They're dead.

Two simple words. Two simple words that settled down in her head, laid out their tents and set up camp. Two words that were there to stay.

They were there to stay, and they were there to haunt her.
