:: Subaru :: Part Three
Reverie's POV
I woke in a large four poster bed with torn hangings. Despite the shredded hangings curtaining the bed, the blankets covering me were in tact and surprisingly soft and warm. Where was I? Shakily I sat up. The moment I did, my head began to throb and I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me. Rubbing the back of my neck where the pain was resonating from, I remembered being in the forest with Subaru. He hit me!
Once the dizziness subsided, I took care to quiet my movements as I pushed the hangings aside to get a look at the room I was occupying. The room was in complete disarray. There was broken furniture, cracks in the walls, it looked as if someone or something had gone on a rampage and tried to destroy everything in its path. The only thing in tact was the bed I was currently sitting on and a nightstand. A glint of metal atop the nightstand caught my eye. My gaze fell on a silver dagger sitting atop the nightstand. It was the only thing on it which made me think it had been put there deliberately. Why?
So many questions flew through my mind: Where was I? Where was Subaru? What was he going to do to me? Were we safe from the werewolves? Were werewolves really real? Did Subaru leave this knife here? For what purpose?
I shook my head trying to turn off the endless stream of internal questions before staggering to my feet. The knife practically called to me, but I refused to take it. I didn't want a weapon; I didn't like violence. It seemed to call out to me again, I gently reached down to run my finger along the blade only to let out a gasp of pain as it sliced my finger open. It was sharp! Blood bubbled to the surface and dripped onto the knife. I hurriedly pulled my hand back only to let out a quiet shriek of terror as a hand suddenly encircled my wrist.
My eyes wildly flit to the owner of the hand and I relaxed as I spotted Subaru scowling at me. "Subaru! You scared me!" I tried to pull my hand free but his grip on my wrist was ironclad. "L-let go, that hurts." I whimpered softly.
"I warned you." His voice came out in a twisted growl, "you should be afraid of me...you should be more afraid of me."
I winced as he tightened his hold on my wrist. "Please, stop."
"I told you, I'd destroy you." He glowered though he looked to be at war with himself. He reached to the nightstand with his free hand snatching up the silver knife before pressing it into my free hand. "If you want to live, you should kill me now. That is the only kind of blade that will harm me."
There was something so heartbreakingly lonely in his eyes as he told me to kill him. The knife slipped from my fingers and I took a step closer to him surprising him enough he released me from his hold. I threw my arms around him as tears welled in my eyes. "No. You won't. You're not the monster you think you are."
"Get away." He sounded so weak and deflated, his words were harsh and trying to push me away but his tone was begging me to stay.
"I'm not going anywhere. If you're going to destroy me, then just do it already, I won't stop you." I hugged him tight sensing he needed to be comforted.
"You're a strange girl." His voice sounded near my neck. A shiver rolled down my spine as his breath tickled the sensitive skin. "You should have killed me when you had the chance."
"Then I'd be sad." A single tear slipped from my hold just as I felt Subaru's lip brush the sensitive skin on my neck.
He paused and pulled away from me. His eyes were glowing. "What did you say?"
"I'd be sad if you died." Another tear dropped onto my cheek. "I like you, Subaru. My world was filled with nothing but cages and monsters until I ran into you. Even though you're a little grumpy, and you push me away a lot, I think maybe you like me too." I smiled somberly.
His glowing eyes grew wide as he held me at an arm's length away. He tightened his grip on my arms and I winced as it became too painful to bear. Though he was trying to scare me, I could still see that heartbreaking loneliness in his breathtaking glowing eyes. "How can you be so sure you didn't just run into an even scarier monster?"
I managed to smile up at him and watched as his eyes grew wide, "I can't believe that anyone whose eyes are filled with so much loneliness could be a monster."
"Are you an idiot?" He scoffed.
"To be able to experience loneliness means you still crave a connection with someone, monsters don't want to connect with anyone they only wish to dominate, control and destroy." I smiled somberly.
His grip on my arms loosened, "you really are a strange girl." He breathed; his gaze flicked down to my finger where I'd cut myself.
I glanced down, it was still bleeding, pretty profusely. As I lifted my finger preparing to wrap it in the hem of my shirt, Subaru caught my wrist in his hand. "What are you do-?" I cut off with a gasp as he pulled my hand toward his face. My heart nearly catapulted out of my chest as he stuck my bleeding finger into his mouth. "Ah!" I tried to pull back but he had a firm hold on my wrist and was immovable. "S-Subaru?"
His eyes widened as he ingested my blood and suddenly his grip on my wrist tightened urging a pained gasp from my lips. Before I could ask him to let go he tugged on my wrist wrenching me toward the bed I'd woken up in. I tumbled atop the bed with a squeak and looked up at Subaru to question him only to let out a gasp as I realized his eyes were glowing in the darkness just like I'd thought I'd seen the night before after he'd struck me to knock me unconscious. Fear gripped my heart as he loomed over me, his eyes aglow.
"S-Subaru?"
He leaned closer; my breath hitched in my throat as I felt his lips on my neck. Something sharp grazed my neck causing my skin to ripple with goosebumps and the hair on the back of my neck and arms to stand on end. What was he doing? I tried to sit up and felt my heart begin to race as I felt his hand roughly press into my shoulder holding me back.
"Subar-?" My voice broke into a cry that was a mixture of pain and pleasure as I felt Subaru bite into my neck. What felt like fangs, punctured my neck and I felt a strange warmth flood through me. I could feel my blood rushing to my neck as if it were being called there and I was gripped with terror as I realized Subaru was drinking my blood. "Ah-, st-stop." I tried to struggle.
His hand clamped down over my mouth silencing me. Through the fear, I felt something pouring into me. It was a heartbreaking loneliness that I knew could only come from him. My body relaxed beneath him and I wrapped my arms around him. I placed a hand to the back of his head trying to calm him as I did with many wild animals when I'd sneak off into the forest. Gently, I stroked the back of his head. He stiffened and the draining of my blood slowed to a stop as he slowly pulled back and looked down at me.
Blood clung to the corners of his mouth a few droplets starting to snake down to his chin. He removed his hand from my mouth and looked down at me with my blood still clinging to his lips. His eyes were aglow, but I didn't feel scared anymore. I managed to smile up at him though I felt a little weak and light headed. I reached up and gently stroked his cheek.
His glowing eyes widened as he stared down at me. He reached up and caught my wrist in his hand but his grip was surprisingly gentle. "You are the strangest girl." Subaru breathed quietly as he turned my hand over in his palm and pressed my wrist to his lips right where the pulsating vein was.
I felt a little apprehensive as his lips parted. I winced as his fangs nicked my wrist. Fresh hot blood dripped down my pale skin. My heart skipped a beat as he lapped it up quickly before tearing into my wrist with his fangs. It almost looked like there were tears in his eyes as he drank from me. His emotions poured into me as he drank from me. Tears welled in my eyes as I was overcome with that same heartbreaking loneliness.
"Subaru...you don't have to be alone...anymore..." my voice grew unsteady as he consumed me. I felt my eyelids begin to grow heavy. I tried once more to calm him, "it'll be okay."
He pulled my wrist away from his lips, "Reverie?"
My heart skipped a beat as he breathed my name. I smiled up at him though I felt weak, dizzy and like I'd faint at any moment. "You remembered my name."
"What are you?" He seemed calmer now.
I managed another weak smile, "I'm lonely too." My vision darkened and I slipped from consciousness.
