:: Subaru :: Part One

A/N: And Ashie said let there be werewolf assholes!!! Because why not XD

Reverie's POV

The moon loomed high in the sky, illuminating the forest around me giving the trees an eerie glow making them look almost menacing. Their branches jutted out violently extending toward me threatening to drag me deeper into the darkness. I clutched the small shoebox with puncture holes in the top of it closer to me and continued on my way. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end, this was the first time in all my years the forest had ever felt ominous and scary.

I'd been sneaking away from my prison in the middle of the night for years, escaping to the forest to play with the wildlife and dance among the trees beneath the moonlight. It was the only time I ever felt alive, running away into the night but I could never truly escape my captors. There was a chill in the air, much too chilly for autumn and for a moment I wished I'd worn shoes, though it was much harder to climb down the tower with shoes on. Glancing around the familiar forest, nothing seemed out of place yet I still felt a sense of danger that had my heart pounding in my chest. I felt like a doe being watched by a predator I couldn't see and quickened my pace.

My long waist length frosty pink hair got swept back in a strong gust of wind and I let out a soft yelp as some strands got entangled in the branches of the now ominous trees. Keeping a firm grip on the small shoe box, I disentangled my pink locks from the branches before continuing on my way at a brisk jog. A wolf howled in the distance stopping me in my tracks. I'd never heard wolves in the forest before.

I hurried my pace to a sprint silently praying the animal inside the box wouldn't be too distressed by my running. If I wasn't quick, it's family could leave him behind, I had to hurry. As I broke through the clearing where I'd found my ward I spotted a cluster of bats hanging from the trees. Hurriedly I knelt in the middle of the clearing and removed the lid of the box revealing a small black baby bat. I'd found it a few nights before, it had fallen from its tree and was almost eaten by a bobcat. It took a few days to nurse him back to health and I prayed his family wouldn't abandon him.

Gently I lifted the baby bat into my hands, "You'll be safe now, your family will protect you." I whispered softly as I raised him above my head keeping my hands flat for him to perch on. The baby bat let out a soft squeak, calling to his mother and I closed my eyes as two bats swooped toward me.

I felt the baby bat being lifted from my hand and opened my eyes in time to see the two bats return to the tree branch with the baby bat clinging to its mother. A small smile claimed my lips as I watched the mother and father bat fawn over their little one, grooming him and checking him over for injury. Gathering the shoebox in my hands I waved farewell to the family of bats and turned to leave.

My heart jumped into my throat as I spotted a giant black wolf blocking my path. The bats screeched behind me and I felt a horde of them fly past me their wings gently grazing me as they darted past me swarming the wolf with loud angry screeches. They were helping me escape!

"Thank you!" I raced past the wolf as it was attacked by what looked like a hundred bats and darted into the forest.

My legs pumped as fast as they could carrying me through the dark ominous forest. There was another howl in the distance. Behind me I could hear the giant black wolf tearing through the forest after me. On the path ahead, illuminated in the moonlight I spotted a boy who appeared to be around my age, sixteen. He had a head of unruly pale lavender hued white hair that seemed to glow in the moonlight and appeared to be lost in thought. It seemed like he'd come to the forest to clear his head like I often did and was unaware of the danger.

"RUN!" I called to him startling him from his pensive thoughts. He turned to me with breathtaking pink tinted scarlet eyes. The moment our gazes met I felt some kind of cosmic force grip my heart through my chest and nearly let out a gasp.

He didn't respond or make any move to run as I ran toward him. What was he doing? Couldn't he see the wolf behind me? Couldn't he hear them howling in the distance? There were more howls than before and it sounded like they were closing in on us. The wolf behind me let out a snarl and I quickened my pace grabbing the boy by the wrist as I reached him and pulling him along with me. His wrist was icy cool to the touch. How long had he been out here? There wasn't any warmth to his skin, was he in a hypothermic state?

We broke through the trees and came to a skidding stop as I realized we'd reached a cliffside. My heart thundered in my chest as I heard the wolves behind us. We were trapped! I stepped in front of the boy and uttered a silent prayer to the spirits of the forest under my breath before calling out into the night.

"Friends of the forest! Please help me!" I cried as three wolves broke through the clearing of trees and let out terrifying snarls and growls.

There was a loud screech from behind us as a swarm of bats took to the sky from the trees below to come to our aide. I heard the familiar sounds of foxes and bobcats in the underbrush ahead of us. Dozens of woodland creatures emerged from the forest surrounding the wolves as the bats swooped in from above. The wolves retreated and the bats and other woodland creatures gave chase running them off, far away from me.

I let out a sigh of relief before shrugging out of the simple grey shawl I'd knitted and extended it to the pensive boy with the piercing gaze. He slapped my hand away as I reached for him moving so fast it hadn't even registered in my mind that he'd lashed out at me until my hand stung with pain. In that moment he looked like a wild animal, cornered, defensive and ready to lash out at anything and everything.

"It's okay. I won't hurt you." I tried softly as I attempted to put the shawl around him once more, "You're freezing, you should put this on-."

He lashed out lightning fast and caught my wrist in an iron tight grasp urging a gasp of pain from my lips. "Get away from me before I destroy you." His tone was dark and icy. A shiver rolled down my spine at the intensity behind his words but there was something deep within his mesmerizing scarlet eyes that kept me rooted to the spot. There was loneliness, pain and self-loathing buried deep in his gaze and despite his death grip on my wrist and every instinct of mine telling me he was dangerous and I should run, I couldn't abandon him.

"It's okay." I attempted again keeping my voice soft and nurturing like when I spoke to the frightened animals I'd sometimes find to take care of in the forest. "I won't hurt yo-."

His grip tightened on my wrist and I winced as I felt something give with a crack before I was wrenched forward, "You think you could hurt me?" He hissed. The moment he pulled me closer I used my free hand to drape the shawl over him. His eyes widened and he released me from his hold so violently I stumbled away from him.

My knees gave and I slipped to the earth and looked down at my bruised wrist as my long frosty pink hair spilled around me. I chanced a glance upward to see the violent boy looking at the hand knit shawl draped around his shoulders in awe. He recovered quickly and pulled it off of him before throwing it back at me. I struggled to catch it with my good hand and looked up at the enraged boy warily.

"Sorry for getting you caught up in my mess..." I tried softly.

He glared at me, "Just stay away from me." Though his words were harsh and his demeanor rough and violent, his eyes revealed sorrow, loneliness, pain and self-loathing.

"...is that really what you want?" I asked him quietly, "That seems lonely."

His eyes narrowed into a glare but before he could say anything more a large tawny owl swooped from the sky and landed in front of me squawking frantically. It was one of my closest friends, Tallim, an owl who'd flown into my tower during a bad snowstorm, I'd nursed him back to health and he remained hidden in the rafters of my tower ever since keeping me company and acting as my guard to warn me when I needed to return.

"Sorry! I have to go." I scrambled to my feet and bit my lip as I turned to the angry boy to find him looking at me with a curious look. "What's your name?"

He glared and for a moment I thought he wouldn't answer me or would snap at me and tell me to get lost. Reluctantly he replied, "Subaru."

I smiled. "I'm Reverie...maybe we'll meet in the woods again another night...goodnight Subaru." With that said I turned and sprinted back into the forest in the direction of my tower.

After bumping into Subaru, the forest no longer felt ominous like it had earlier. It was strange, that was the first time I'd encountered wolves in the forest. The dark palace hidden deep in the woods with the ominous tower I was imprisoned loomed into view. Tallim flew ahead of me and swooped into the open window.

Moving silently between the trees I approached the ominous tower and felt a shiver run down my spine as I looked at the dark menacing tower. It was made of thick dark stones covered in moss and thick black thorn covered vines that looked poisonous. Hurriedly I scrambled to the tower and began scaling it moving carefully to avoid the black thorn covered vines. Since the tower was so old many of the stones jutted out giving me small footholds. Years of escaping the tower had shown me the best route to climb up and down the tower and now I could scale it in just under a minute.

I slipped through the open window and hurriedly shut it before racing to the glittering golden cage in the center of the room, my prison. There was a single golden bar of the cage that was weak and could easily be moved so I could slip through the bars. It moved silently and I was able to slip back into my cage just as I heard the many locks at the door leading to the stairwell begin to shift.

My heart raced as I dove onto the bed within my glittering cage covered in warm furs and the finest silks. I buried myself under the covers and pretended to be asleep as the heavy wooden door swung open with a loud groan. Over the years, I'd tried to escape many times, but they always found me, as if they had some way to track me. Once, a servant boy had tried to help me escape them, they found us and killed him before my eyes and told me I'd never be able to escape them.

I heard the clinking of keys on a keyring before one slid into the lock of my cage. The door swung open with a soft whine. Heavy footfalls approached the bed and I tried to slow my breathing and heart rate to make it convincing that I was asleep.

Something heavy fell atop me and I felt a liquid substance seep into the sheets overtop of me and jolted into an upright position shoving whatever had landed on me away. A scream caught in my throat as I saw the bloody carcass of a bobcat, one of the ones that had tried to protect me from the wolves, lying across my bed. I yelped and leapt out of bed as tears welled in my eyes. A strong hand latched onto my already injured wrist and I held back a cry of pain as I faced my captor, a young man of eighteen. He was tall with dark brown hair, wild glowing golden eyes, sun kissed bronze skin and faint traces of dark stubble along his chin, Ambrose. His family had taken me in when I was orphaned.

I didn't understand the family and their strange customs, traditions and rules. They were obsessed with wolves and hunting and Ambrose's mother used to tell me I was special and me joining their family would bring about some great wolf uprising. I'd always thought they were weird bedtime stories. On my twelfth birthday they informed me I'd be marrying Ambrose when I was of age. That was the first time I'd tried to run away. After that, they kept me imprisoned in the palace. After a few more escape attempts I was brought to the tower and placed in the glittering golden cage.

Ambrose looked over his shoulder at one of the boys who was always at his side, a young man of seventeen with dark hair and dark eyes, "You must have been mistaken, Ryland, my little bride is still here in her cage, not running around in the forest." He turned back to me with a knowing smirk, "Right?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about." I couldn't take my eyes away from the bloody carcass of the bobcat lying across my bed. Tears burned in my eyes threatening to fall but I refused to give Ambrose the satisfaction.

He tightened his hold on my wrist and I held back a cry of pain. "Stay here, in your pretty little cage, like a good girl." An almost animalistic snarl escaped him before he released me from his hold. With that said he turned on his heel, grabbed the bloody carcass of the bobcat and walked out of my cage motioning for one of his lackeys to lock it.

After they all left I looked to the blood staining my bed as my tears fell freely mourning the loss of the innocent life. I collapsed to the floor in a sobbing heap. Tallim cooed above me and flit to the window drawing my gaze. In the tree line in the distance I thought I saw a splash of lavender hued white hair but it was gone in the next moment. It must have been my mind playing tricks on me, thinking back on the beautifully broken boy I'd stumbled upon in the forest.
