Gavin x RK900 ~ Undercover
A/N: blep. So like, the drafts for this thing was empty and i just watched Detroit evolution a few hours ago (probably longer when this is finished) , so you bet your ass it's gonna be a sappy fan fic with that pair in mind.
While I normally call Rk900 Bryan, he will he referred to as nines here. :)
..........
There must've been something off with his sensors. Had to be.
There was no rhyme or reason for it, but his objective was off.
Yes, after the revolution "objectives" weren't really what they were, but they didn't disappear, they simply morphed into personal desires.
Make friends with someone, buy a house, ask him/her/they out, etc.
But something had to have gone wrong with Nines' system.
Objective: Kiss Gavin Reed
Had to be a mistake.
He wasn't involved with the detective, they were simply partners at work. Yet, there the objective was, prodding him, wanting him to be aware of it.
"Tim can, you paying attention?"
Ah, reality. Right.
"Sorry detective, what do you need?" He responded, voice calm and collected.
Gavin raised a brow at him, half confused, "so you weren't paying attention. A first." Gavin nodded towards his computer, "this case. Fowler think's it may be the work of a serial killer, one known for their hate crimes towards androids and humans alike. Do you notice any connections with previous cases?"
Right, they were working on a homicide. It would've gone to Connor and Hank, but the pair have been going city to city to train androids to work in the field. And training human officers to treat their partners as equals.
Mines looked at the screen, and mentally pulled up the case, running it against previous cold cases they had.
Immediately, a pattern appeared.
"All the targets had their genitals removed. I'd say indefinitely could be the reason, but it seems much more personal. Most crimes like that target one gender, this targets any, and doesn't scramble the uterus or any of that. From what is known about the victims, all of them were somewhere along the lgbt spectrum. If we include trans individuals, there are a few cold cases where their sex was carved into their skin as they were left naked and any surgeries were made obvious."
"Oh great, a transphobic homophobe. Fun," Gavin said, sighing heavily.
"The patterns point to it. Our recent victim matches these cold cases, so it is very likely we're looking at a serial killer."
"Nines, can you grab me a cup of coffee? I need to go tell flower his hunch was right."
Normally, Nines would protest, but Gavin wasn't being rude, and coffee would probably help him right now. So fine. "Right away." With a small smile, he headed to the break room to brew a pot.
He met Chris, who was sipping coffee.
"Ah, Officer Miller, is the pot still hot?"
Chris looked at Nines and shook his head, "not hot enough for Reed, I can tell you that much."
Nines chuckled lightly, "probably not." He starts brewing a fresh pot. "Heard your up to be a detective soon, congrats."
"Thanks Nines, Chen is upset she didn't get it first, but she won't be long, I'm sure."
Tina Chen was a scary lesbian, of course she wouldn't be long.
"Oh," Christ started. "How's your current case. Any leads?"
"Possibly. Looks like it could be a serial killer who exclusively targets LGBT individuals."
Chris went slightly wide eyed at that, "shit."
"Yeah. Considering the targets, it can easily narrow done our suspects, but seeing as they've gotten away with so many murders, it might be difficult to catch them."
"Hey, you and Reed can handle it. Your balance each other out and have a good back and forth."
"Thank you officer Miller."
"Just call me Chris Nines. And if Reed decided to cause you trouble, I'm here to talk."
"Where'd that come from?" Nines muttered.
He shrugged, "I know he can be frustrating at times, that's all."
The coffee pot made a small noise to signal it was done and Nines quickly made Gavin's perfect cup.
"Good luck with your case Nines."
"Thank you Chris. And i hope you become detective, you deserve it."
Chris smiled kindly at that as Nines left for Gavin's desk, seeing his partner with his face on his desk.
That did not bode well.
"Your coffee Detective Reed. How was the talk with Fowler?"
"Well, fine, if you leave out the fact he wants us to go undercover as a gay couple to lure the killer out."
Oh... it would make sense that Gavin felt uncomfortable with the idea. "Ah... perhaps there is another way?"
"No, there's not. Unless we can catch them in the act of killing. We need to narrow down the suspects anyways."
"Right."
After a few hours, Nines and Gavin has created two possible suspects. They were the only people that seemed to be able to access the victims. At least, that he timelines that matched. Their were other suspects, but these two suspects stood out.
They were a married couple.
They were a very influential couple who hosted parties all the time. They weren't very... open about their dislike of LGBT people, but it wasn't hard to find lawsuit cases from wrongfully fired workers.
So they would have to go undercover after all.
"They have a party tomorrow night, so we'll have to go. Fowler managed to get us invitations, so we just have to look the part," Gavin informed.
"Do you have anything in your wardrobe that would suit a formal event? At least a smart casual?"
Gavin rolled his eyes, "I'm not a slob tin can. Think you can act your part? If so, we'll be just fine."
"Pretend to be madly in love with you? It will be a challenge, but it should be fine."
"Great, I'll pick you up at seven tomorrow. So be ready." Gavin waved Nines away and left. It was the end of their shift after all.
Nines just sighed and headed home. And by home, he means the Anderson household. Connor and Nines were taken in by Hank after the revolution. And Hank didn't mind housing them.
It did help that Nines was very willing to look after Sumo while the pair was away. He personally preferred cats, but sumo was a very lovable companion.
When he got home, he took sumo out for a walk after feeding him and then got his clothes ready for the next day.
The objective still burned heavily in his mind.
Kiss Gavin... why did his subconscious want that so badly to conjure up the objective.
Tomorrow would be interesting...
Nines looked in the mirror. He was smartly dressed, black slacks, dark blue collared shirt, rolled up to the elbows, a black tie and smart black loafers. His hair was slicked back and he decided to accessorize with a silver watch, a gift from Connor. He'd gotten it for Nines' "birthday" a few weeks ago. It came in the mail. Connor and Nines' birthdays were the day they awakened. To think it had been well over a year since the revolution was strange.
A year working with detective Reed...
The objective flashed up again.
What was with it?
It honestly had to be a glitch in his code. But since yesterday, it had-
No. Thinking about it, that objective had been there for awhile. It just never seemed to be as annoying as it was now.
But Nines didn't like Gavin as anything other than a partner at work. Right?
Nines dismissed the objective in time for someone to knock at the door. Time for a date with Detective unlikable.
Nines walked towards the door in brisk movements. He expected Gavin to show up in shit clothes, having an outfit at the ready for him, but when he opened the door... he was taken aback.
Gavin was... polished. His messy hair was slicked back, his scruff trimmed to look for smart. He wore a nice red button up that tucked into grey slacks, a grey suit jacket thrown over him. The first few buttons of the shirt were undone, but it worked. He even used a black belt for his look and also wore black loafers. He cleaned up well.
"Lookin good tin can. Ready to go?"
Nines recovered from his momentary shock, "yes." He followed Gavin out, licking the door and got in Gavin's car. It was a nice, clean model, a cheap but expensive looking car model. So it worked perfectly for the event. As they got in, Gavin grabbed something from the glove compartment and tossed it to Nines.
It was a... Ring?
"The story Fowler set up for us is that we're a married couple. So wear the ring. And do why feels natural. No bs. We can fake this thing if we just add details that were never actually there."
Nines nodded curtly and put on the ring, "so, Nines Reed?"
Gavin pauses as he was starting the car, "what, you want your last name?"
"I don't have one. Remember?"
"You didn't take Anderson's last name? I know Connor did."
Yeah, Connor did. "But I'm not Connor."
"I know you aren't, you're the terminator that I was partnered with."
"Not Robocop this time?" Nines joked.
Having smirked a little, "saving that one for later. Anyway, we should get going."
The car ride to the party was calm, listening to the radio. Nines found himself fixated on the ring, and the objective that he couldn't get rid of.
Most androids could get rid of them easily, but he was having so much trouble. For what?
It didn't matter right now, they had a killer to catch.
"Invitation?" The man at the door asked. Gavin smiled and pulled out the invitations Fowler got them. The man looked at them and let the pair in.
So far, things were smooth.
They stuck close as the entered, greeted by some of the richest and most influential people in Detroit. And among them, was Fowler and his wife. They were their cover basically.
"Fowler, didn't expect to see you here!" Gavin said warmly, approaching the couple. The suspects with them.
"Really? Even though I told you I'd be here?" Fowler sassed.
Gavin rolls his eyes jokingly, "Good evenings Mrs. Fowler, you look as lively as ever."
She smiled kindly, knowing the story for the night beforehand. "Thank you Gavin. And Nines, it's been forever. You look as dashing as ever."
"Thank you," He responded politely.
The suspects, Jane and Peter Clancy, eyed the pair suspiciously.
"Oh, how rude of me," Fowler said apologetically. "Jane, Peter, these are two of my best detectives, Gavin and Nines."
"A pleasure," Jane said sweetly. "Must be quite accomplished."
"Our track record is nearly as good as Lieutenant Hank and Connor. They've just had longer together," Gavin informed.
Jane looked at Gavin's hand, seeing the ring. "You're married? Why didn't you bring your wife with you then?" She asked.
"Oh, I don't have a wife. I'm actually married to Nines, we've been married for a few weeks now."
"Closer to a month actually," Nines corrected cheekily.
Gavin rolled his eyes, putting an arm around Nines' waist, "really? Guess time flies with you."
Jane and Peter took this information... differently.
Jane showed signs of disgust, ever so brief and Peter, he seemed fine, calm and proud?
"That's wonderful. Nines, I see your an android, did that put any strain on your relationship?"
Nines chuckled, "a little bit. Gavin was a bit of an asshole when we first met. But, things changed and he saw that me and other androids were alive. Though, when that turned to affection..."
"Hey, leave me alone, I'm bad at emotions."
"Bad?" Nines hummed jokingly.
He leaned into Nines a little, "definitely bad. But hey, emotions have been smooth sailing for a long time since I met you."
"You're a sap Gavin."
Peter chuckled, "a lot of relationships start off rocky. But you two look good together."
"Thank you. Uh, do you serve android friendly drinks by chance?" Gavin asked.
"Of course," Peter said proudly. "Just over their. They have a blue tint to them so people can tell them apart." Peter pointed out a refreshments table.
Gavin smiled, "thank you. I'll be right back then, I'm going to grab us some drinks." Gavin smiled and kissed Nines' cheek, heading off.
"So, how's your come to terms with liking a human?" Peter asked curiously.
"Well, androids get objectives. After we deviated, we still got them, they just reflected our personal desires more. And I kept getting so many about Gavin and, it left me confused. Talk to Gavin, make Gavin smile, have drinks with Gavin-" shit. Was he in love with Gavin? "I subconsciously was falling for him and I never really thought about him being human. I just loved him."
Fowler seemed surprised by the speech, "that's pretty cute. Didn't hear any of it in your vows."
"Because it's too cheesy."
Mrs. Fowler laughed, "and Gavin's wasn't?"
Gavin then returned, holding a glass for himself, and one for Nines. Nines took it thankfully.
"Such a sweetheart," Nines joked, pecking Gavin's cheek thankfully.
"I try. So, did I miss anything?"
Fowler shook his head, "just talking about how cheesy you two are."
"Look, I know my vows were corny, but the tears were genuine tears of happiness."
The group chuckled. Jane even did too, but her laugh seemed forced.
"Enough about us, what about you two? You seem like a lovely couple?" Bones asked kindly. Peter smiled in response.
"We're the typical high school sweethearts. We've always been together, it just made sense," he explained.
"I think you beat us at the corniness," Gavin joked.
"Maybe," he said, shrugging.
All things considered, they were and attractive couple. Peter had very tanned skin, and vibrant green eyes, hair cut short and clothes tailor made to make him look perfect. Glasses fit neatly on his face and he seemed genuinely kind. Which made him strange conferring he was one of their biggest suspects.
Jane was pale, with curly brown hair and blue eyes. He hair went to her waist and seemed so elegant with his green dress.
A picture perfect couple.
Nines honestly wished neither of them were murderers.
"We're boring I'm all honesty," Peter joked. Fowler's phone buzzed and he smiled politely and checked it. "Ah, it looks like we have to leave early, our kid started a house party while we were gone."
"Did he really? Oh my god. Thank you for the invite, sorry for leaving." The pair quickly left, leaving the undercover pair and the murder suspects.
Peter still seemed friendly, even after Fowler left. "Feel free to talk and mingle. Make yourselves at home. I have to greet some guests, but I'll try to find you two later." The couple left and Gavin and Nines were left alone, sipping their drinks.
"I thought being a couple would be harder than it has been," Gavin admitted.
Nines chuckled, "you falling for me Detective?"
"What?" Gavin muttered. "How's your drink?"
Changing subjects... of course.
"I quite like it. It's very smooth and I can actually taste it."
That's curious. "What does it taste like?"
"Fruity. Like I'm somewhere warm with the sun in me and drinking fruit juice. And it has a sour kick to it. But it's smooth, and sweet."
"Sounds good. Glad they decided to actually make stuff for androids."
"I am too. Gavin, I have a question."
"What is it?"
Nines gestured to a less populated part of the party and Gavin started walking towards it. When they were there, Nines was blunt. "Can you kiss me?"
"What?"
"Gavin, please, just kiss me. I'll explain later."
He seemed curious, but smiled at Nines. "Definitely explain later, alright?" He slid his arms around Nines neck and captured his lips. It was gentle, kind and loving. Nines put his hands on Gavin's waist, keeping up with the gentle kiss. It was short... but neither minded as they pulled apart, smiles on their faces.
"You hungry?" Nines asked jokingly.
Gavin snorted, "you did not just kiss me and then ask about food."
"But you're hungry?"
"Of course I am."
They simply acted like a married couple for the rest of the time. Part of it was because it was their act, they were failing suspects... part of it? Well, they just liked being with each other.
Nines realized that what he said earlier was right. The objectives wouldn't had appeared unless he subconsciously desired Gavin.
Gavin...
He didn't seem to mind flirting with Nines or being touchy with him. They almost forgot about the suspects, until Peter approached them.
"You two look like you're having fun."
Nines smiled kindly, "it's a fantastic party. To even include food and drinks for androids is especially wonderful."
"My goal is to make everyone feel welcome. It's getting late, are you two good to go home? I can arrange for a driver if you need."
"We'll be good, don't worry. We don't live far," Gavin assured.
"Besides, we're staying at the hotel nearby tonight. Thought we'd do it in case we drank," Nines added.
"Then take care when you leave."
"Will do."
They stayed for a little longer than decided to leave, driving to the hotel a few blocks down. They checked into their room and continued to act like a married couple.
Which included the kids before they entered their room. A kiss that was extremely hot and heavy. They walked in and closed the door behind them.
What should've stopped there only stopped because they needed to talk. Gavin pulled Nines to the bed and the sat down besides each other.
"So, the kiss earlier?"
"I'm sorry if this sounds blunt or forward," Nines started apologetically. "But I like you. Romantically that is. I think I have for awhile but this fake dating... I've liked it more than anything."
Gavin seemed relived, "you mean that Nines?"
"Why would I lie?"
"I don't know... but I've liked you for awhile too. So, after this is over, let's go on a proper date."
"That sound nice."
They looked at each other and pressed closer, connecting lips once again.
They had to act like a married couple, right, then they could start with the honeymoon.
A knock woke them both up in the middle of the night. Or... five in the morning to be exact.
Gavin groaned and got up, going to the door. Nines got up too, staying outside of sight. Gavin looked through the door and opened it, glad he and Nines decided to switch to pajamas.
"Jane? What brings you here?"
"Is your husband here with you?"
"No, he has an earlier morning than me, so he went to work," Gavin lied.
"May I come in?"
"Sure, I guess."
Nines stayed silent, 'suspect is in hotel room, I'm hidden, will call if we need backup.'
"My husband used to be very much against people like you," she said calmly. "He detested androids and the LGBT community. Then he met his mistress who is actually a mister.
That sounded like motive.
"Or, had. His mistress was murdered awhile back, but he kept getting so close to different people, no matter the sex or gender. He didn't sleep with all of them, but it makes my skin crawl."
"Jane? What are you getting at?"
"You freaks took my husband away from me!"
'I need backup NOW.'
"Once the world is purged of such disgusting sins, then my husband will return to me."
She pulled out a gun, pointed at Gavin. There was a silencer on it, and a knife stuck out of her purse.
Well, she definitely did it.
"Do you kill all those other victims?"
"Oh, you figured out they were connected? Well, yes. But it doesn't matter, you won't be able to tell the tale."
"You don't want to do this Jane. They'll figure you out."
"Even if I'm caught here, I'll just say you invited me here, and tried to assault me. After all, who would believe a cop over a frail women."
"You wouldn't be this bold if it was Nines."
"Trust me freak, I've killed more than a few androids. I could've taken him."
Nines knew the cops were at the hotel, and were charging their way up.
"You never really think things through, so you?" Gavin asked.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Now!"
Nines spring into action and got the gun from Jane's hands. Just as the DPD broke down the door.
Caught red handed.
"You set me up!"
"We didn't do anything," Nines said calmly. "You're the one who didn't check if anyone else was in the room."
She was locked away for life, and Peter, he helped pay for the funeral costs of all the people and androids she killed. He launched himself into LGBT activism and tried to better himself after finding out.
It had to hurt.
And Nines and Gavin...
"You guys going undercover again?" Chris asked, gesturing to the ring on Nines' finger.
"No. Gavin actually gave this to me last night. I'm surprised that he was so happy to propose after a few months, but, I accepted, so I guess we're both stupid."
"No way. Congrats man. Does Connor know?"
"I informed Connor just this morning. He's excited for the wedding. Chris I do have a question though."
"Of course, what's up?"
"I know that we aren't the closest, but you're someone I consider a close friend, so would you be my best man?"
"Holy shit, really?" Chris exclaimed. "Of course man! I'll be the best best man you've ever seen!"
"That's the spirit."
Nines and Gavin decided to date and they just couldn't stay merely boyfriends. So of course, Gavin proposed. Who knows what the future holds.
