~(Y/n)'s POV~

"I hate the rain..." I mumble as I walk into the convenience store.

The cashier smiles as he greets me. "Hey, (Y/n). What're you doing here so late?"

"I need a couple of things. I forgot them earlier."

"Whatever you need, it's on the house."

I couldn't believe my ears. "You'll get into trouble if your manager finds out you gave away free stuff."

"Nah, don't worry about it. I know you've been living in that house across the street with that android of yours."

I froze entirely. "How'd you find out?"

"That android of yours, Ralph, wandered in here the other day looking for you. He was so worried. What happened to his, um, face?"

"My dad burned him with a metal rod when he visited. Bastard's been a leech on my back for years after my mom divorced his sorry ass. Ever since he burnt Ralph, I sold my house and took all my money to keep him safe. It was also to keep my dad away from finding me and my money."

"What an asshat."

"You can say that again," I groan. I wandered the aisles and found what I had failed in purchasing earlier. I sat the items on the counter and waited for them to get scanned. When the cashier skipped the scanning and just put the things in a bag, I raised a brow. "I have enough money to pay for this, y'know."

"Like I said, it's on me. I want you to keep your money. You never know when you'll desperately need it."

I accepted his kind offer with a smile. "Thanks." I take the bag and pull up my hood to keep the rain out of my eyes as I left the convenience store. With it almost being midnight, the streets were practically abandoned as I ignored the crosswalks. I climbed over the fence with the bag dangling from my wrist, making sure the plastic didn't get caught on the fence. I landed in a puddle and groaned as mud seeped into my shoes.

"She's just a little girl," I heard someone say. I walk past the door and peered around the corner to see Ralph pointing his knife at a little girl.

"Strangers might hurt (Y/n). Ralph can't let you hurt her. Ralph loves her too much."

"Ralph," I call out to the android. He dropped his knife and dashed over to me, hugging me tightly. "What's going on?"

"Strangers want to stay with (Y/n) and Ralph."

I glanced at the two and knew they wouldn't cause any trouble. "It's alright, Ralph. I don't think they'll hurt us."

The woman smiled, "Thank you. We'll be gone by morning."

"No need to rush. If you need to catch your bearings, you're free to stay longer."

The woman glanced to the little girl in her embrace. "Thank you, but we must keep moving."

I nod, "I completely understand. Let's get you both inside and out of this freezing rain." I took Ralph's hand in mine and we guide our visitors inside the house. Out of the rain, the woman introduces her and the little girl. "I'm Kara and this is Alice."

"Nice to meet you both. As you know, I'm (Y/n) and this is Ralph," I said. The android holding my hand waved meekly at them before dropping his hand. I noticed Alice was freezing and Kara pulled off her soaked jacket. I went up the stairs and into the first bedroom on my left, grabbing a pillow and blanket for the little girl.

"Here you go," I said, handing the items to Kara as I returned from the short trip upstairs.

"Thank you, (Y/n)." The android had already started a fire to keep Alice from catching a cold and to dry her clothes. The girl snuggled up under the blanket while Kara and I sat at the table. "You're human. What're you doing in this place with an android?"

"I sold my apartment due to my sleazy dad who was a deadbeat and tried to siphon money out of my bank account. He visited one day and while Ralph was tending the garden, he burned him for no damn reason. I was so angry and knew getting rid of my dad was not the answer. I took all my money, sold my house, and ran away with Ralph. It's been almost eight months since we left."

Kara smiled, "You care very much for Ralph."

"Yeah, he's all I have now. My mom doesn't talk to me and my dad's on the top of my to-kill list."

"I never thought a human would go so far for an android," she muttered.

"When they're family, you'll risk life and limb for them," I beam softly. "Just like you and Alice. I see a mother trying to protect her daughter from this unforgiving world."

Kara gazes at Alice with melancholy. "Yes. We're trying to find a place for a fresh start. Hopefully, we'll find one soon."

"I hope you do, as well."

The kitchen door opened and Ralph wandered into the room. I sent him a smile and he returns it with his own. "Ralph thinks (Y/n) should rest."

"I will, sweetie. Don't worry."

He nods and picks up a chair. Kara watches as Ralph pulled his chair close to mine and our shoulders pressed against each other. I leaned against him and found myself falling asleep within minutes.

-Next Morning-

When I woke up, I found myself on the mattress upstairs. A blanket covered me and I moved it so I could get to my feet. Stretching, I felt my back pop and I winced slightly at the obnoxious sound. "Geez..."

Leaving the room, I heard Kara's voice from downstairs. "You killed that man."

I descended the stairs and saw Ralph fidgeting nervously. "Ralph didn't mean to hurt him. Ralph was only protecting (Y/n)."

I connected the puzzle pieces and knew Kara had seen the dead homeless man in the bathtub. I quickly came to Ralph's aid and stepped in between them, my (e/c) eyes meeting her pale blue ones. "Ralph protected me, Kara. That man tried to... tried to..." I felt tears trail down my cheeks at the horrid memory. The man had tried to push himself onto me, but Ralph returned in time to save me. In the end, he ended up killing him.

Kara seemed to read between the lines as I saw sadness cross her features. "I'm so sorry that happened to you, (Y/n)."

Ralph brushed past Kara and pulled me into a hug. He rested his head on top of mine and held me close. "Ralph will always protect (Y/n)." I hug him tightly and rest my head on his chest.

"I'll check in the house," we heard an unknown voice say from outside. Kara and Alice tensed as they searched for a place to hide. Ralph and I helped them find a hiding spot just in the nick of time.

The front door opened and the two of us watched as an android with black hair and brown eyes entered. "I'm looking for an AX400. Has it passed through here?"

"No," Ralph responds swiftly. From his body language, I could tell he was stressed. I remained silent as the machine wandered around the house.

He checked the kitchen before heading up the stairs. "Is there anyone upstairs?"

"No," Ralph answers.

With slightly narrowed eyes, the android descended the steps. As he closed in on the space under the stairwell, Ralph's fidgeting grew. Just then, Kara and Alice jumped out and dashed for the door. Before the detective could react, Ralph grabbed him to provide some time for the two to run away.

When I tried to help, the detective android had pushed me away and into a wall. Ralph immediately let go when he heard a small whimper of pain escape my lips. The other android dashed out and followed after Kara and Alice. Ralph placed his hands on my cheeks and checked my head to make sure I wasn't injured. "Is (Y/n) okay?"

"Yeah, I'm okay. I just hope Kara and Alice made it out without being caught." When I tried to move away, Ralph refused to let go of my face. I was confused as to why he wasn't letting go and stared into his one good hazel eyes and his ruined one. "What's wrong, Ralph?"

His eyes never left mine as he bent down and kissed me gently. Shock filled my body at the sudden action, but I pushed it away and kissed back. It was an innocent kiss brimming with affection and I've never felt happier in my life. As the kiss continued, I placed my hands on Ralph's chest and closed my eyes.

As our lips disconnected, Ralph whispered, "Will (Y/n) ever leave Ralph?"

I shook my head and hugged him tightly. "Of course not, sweetheart. I'll always be by your side."

"(Y/n) makes Ralph happy. It is a warm sensation that Ralph wishes to keep experiencing with (Y/n)."

"I love you, Ralph."

"Ralph loves (Y/n), too."
