~(Y/n)'s POV~

Welcome, (Y/n).

The door opens for me and I thank the automated voice. I place my jacket on the coat rack and headed into the living room. "Dad?"

I placed the box of Bellini Paints on the glass cabinet before searching the house. In the kitchen, everything was spotless as usual. I left the room and moved to upstairs. When I was about to check Dad's room, the door opened. Markus and I almost ran into each other, but I quickly stepped out of the way.

"Good morning, (Y/n)," he greets me with a smile.

"Good morning to you, too, Markus. How's my dad?"

"Carl is well. We're about to head to the studio if you'd like to join us."

"I'd love to. Also, I've got him a present." I place a finger over my lips. "Make sure to keep it a secret."

His smile widens. "I promise not to tell him."

"I'll see you both downstairs." I head back to the steps and went back downstairs. I grabbed the paints and headed into Dad's studio to surprise him. Inside, I sat on a stool and waited for them.

A few minutes passed and the door opened. Markus pushed Dad in and his eyes widened in surprise when he saw me. "(Y/n), my baby girl!"

I stood from the stool and gave him a hug. "Hey, Dad. Sorry 'bout the sudden visit."

"Oh, nonsense! I rather it be you than Leo."

I sigh, "Is he asking for money again?"

He nods with closed eyes. "Yeah."

"Dad, if you need me to stop him—"

"Don't concern yourself with your brother. If he just lays off the damn drugs, he wouldn't need to pop in every week for money. I'll handle him, sweetheart."

"Carl, shall I go get breakfast started for you and (Y/n)?"

I stepped in quickly before Dad could say anything. "Actually, I'll handle breakfast."

"But, (Y/n), it's my—"

"Nope! Don't say it! Not listening!" I plug my ears and grinned. I unclogged my ears and pushed Markus away from the door. "I don't care if it's your job. You're family, Markus. Honestly, I like you more than my own brother. Sorry, Dad."

He waved it off. "I completely agree."

"Before I do go to the kitchen..." I went back over to where I was sitting and pulled out the Bellini Paints box. "Happy birthday!"

"(Y/n), you shouldn't have," he said as I handed him the box.

"Oh, please. I know how much you love your paint. I may have snuck in here while you were at an art gathering to see which colors you were low on." I kiss him on the cheek. "I'll go get breakfast ready. Markus, make sure he doesn't overdo it."

"Of course, (Y/n)," he smiled.

I left the studio and wandered to the kitchen. Pulling out eggs and bacon, I prepare Dad's favorite and just the way he likes it. With the food cooked, I separate them on two plates for the both of us. I grabbed two trays and enough silverware for us, as well. As I poured glasses of water, Markus entered the kitchen. "(Y/n), let me help you with the trays."

I glanced down and realized I wouldn't be able to carry both of them. "That would be great, Markus. I'd probably spill both trays if I tried carrying them both."

"You are rather clumsy," he laughs.

"Hey! That is... very true," I huff with laughter. Markus' smile grew bigger as we walked out of the kitchen to set breakfast at the table. Dad was already sitting at the table and the android served him. I pulled up a chair next to him and we ate side-by-side. While we were talking, I saw Markus head over to the chessboard.

"You still amazing at chess?" Dad asked.

"You know it. You up for a challenge?"

"I know you'll beat me. Try playing against Markus."

I placed my fork down. "I don't mind a game of chess." I stood from my seat and shuffled over to the chessboard. I sat across from Markus, claiming the golden set. "Fancy a game?"

"Speed chess?" He asked with a smile.

"Speed chess."

Our game began. Markus was a much better player than Dad and he proved to be a challenge. In the end, he won and I gasped when I realized where I had went wrong. "Congrats, Markus. I admit defeat."

Dad rolled over in his wheelchair and examined our moves. "Oh, (Y/n), you moved your knight too early."

I pat his arm. "I know, I know."

"Let's return to the studio."

Markus took Dad's wheelchair and pushed him with me beside him. Back in the studio, he added a few details to his next masterpiece while Markus and I watched.

Fifteen minutes flew by and Dad returned to his wheelchair. I saw a curious glint cross through his eyes and he pulled Markus over to a white, untouched canvas. He handed his palette and asked the android to paint what he wanted. Markus glanced at me for a few seconds before he started painting.

I watched every brushstroke as he created what appeared to be a girl sitting in a field of flowers. Dad leaned forward in his wheelchair and I saw his eyes widen. "Markus, that's..."

"Yes, it's (Y/n)," the machine responds.

"Why did you paint her?"

"You said paint what you want. I painted the most beautiful and kind person I know."

I placed a hand over my heart as I felt as if it was going to burst from my chest. "Markus, I—"

The door opened and the one person I didn't want to see entered the studio. All eyes fell on Leo as he stumbled into the room, his unsteady gaze falling on the painting Markus had just created. "Oh, how sweet. A fuckin' android in love with my sister. What else did I miss?"

"Leo, watch it," Dad warns in a low voice.

"I need money," Leo simply replies.

"Again? You were here a few days ago asking the same thing! Don't tell me you wasted all that money on drugs," Dad sighs in annoyance.

"No! No, I didn't. I dropped that junk months ago," Leo lies.

"You're not getting another cent from me, Leo. Leave."

My brother saunters up to me and shoves my shoulder slightly. "While I get nothing, (Y/n) always get what she wants 'cause she's the favorite child!"

Dad growled lowly, "Unlike you, she has a stable job and doesn't come knocking at my door for just money. She visits whenever she wants and doesn't beg for anything. Get out, Leo."

Leo scowled at me as he shoved me back more. "You're just little miss perfect, aren't you?! You don't even come to visit your own brother!"

"Every time I've tried to visit, you turn me away! Don't turn this on me for trying to keep our entire family together!" I shout. "I've even given you money, you ungrateful asshole!"

My words snapped Leo into a rage. He shoved me against a shelf, causing me to fall and the shelf to tip over. When I saw the shelf falling towards me accompanied by paint cans and brushes, I closed my eyes and shielded my face, hoping it wouldn't hurt too much. Suddenly, I was pushed to the ground and felt no pain. Opening my eyes, I saw Markus had shielded me with his body. Our eyes met and I couldn't even speak.

"Are you hurt, (Y/n)?" Markus asked worriedly.

"I-I'm fine thanks to you, Markus. I know those paint cans aren't light. Are you injured?"

He smiled in reassurance. "No, I'm alright." He pushes the shelf off his back and got to his feet. Once he was steady on his feet, he helped me to mine and I thanked him again. Dad glared sharply at Leo for his careless actions. "You could've hurt your own sister! Get the hell outta here, Leo!"

My brother cursed under his breath as he stomped out of the studio and to the front door. Dad sighed sadly as the door closed behind Leo. "He used to not be like this..."

"It's not your fault, Dad. Maybe once he can't afford the drugs and the addiction washes away, we'll get the old Leo back."

"I hope so, sweetheart." He eyed the painting once more curiously. As he examined it, Dad changed the subject for the sake of all of us. "Markus, what are your feelings towards (Y/n)? By this painting, I say it goes beyond friendship."

"Really? You're asking him if he loves me?" I ask in disbelief.

"Is that what this feeling is called?" Markus asked, placing a hand over his chest.

Dad smiled, "Yes, it is, son. I couldn't ask for more proof after watching what just happened. You protected her, Markus. What went through your head when you saw my daughter was in danger?"

"I... I didn't want her to get hurt. Seeing her in pain would also be painful for me."

Dad wheeled over to the android and placed a hand on his arm. "Who knew machines could learn to love. This is an amazing breakthrough."

I couldn't say a word as I registered Markus' words in my head. I bit the tip of my fingernail as I realized I just received a love confession. "Hold up!" Markus and Dad looked at me in bewilderment. "I just received a love confession and you're okay with this?"

"Who cares if Markus is an android? They deserve to love who they wish. It's an emotion, not a program," Dad chuckled.

"Y'know, I thought fathers were supposed to be like, "You better treat her right, or I'll shoot ya in the front yard!" Am I right or does that just happen in movies and t.v. shows?"

"I trust Markus to care for you better than your own damn brother and that's sayin' a lot," Dad smiled while laughing.

When I glanced over at the android, I saw he had gone silent and his body was slightly rigid. I smiled reassuringly at him and took his hand in mine. As Dad wheeled out of the room, I stared into his pale green eyes. "I've heard countless of stories about androids experiencing love. I just... never expected I would be the cause of one's affection."

Markus entwined our fingers as he lifted our hands up. "You are a beautiful, smart, and funny girl. Since I met you, I have experienced emotions that make me feel... alive."

"You are alive! Don't let other humans tell you you're not. Honestly, if I were the president, I'd give equal rights to all androids and even let them participate in the government."

Markus leaned forward and rested his forehead against mine. "You are different than other humans, (Y/n). It's nice to be treated as an equal."

I smiled and pressed a soft, gentle kiss to his lips. Markus was taken aback and slightly confused. I giggle and use my other hand to poke his cheek. "That was a kiss. It's what couples do to show their affection."

No words left Markus as he absorbed what I had said. In response, he sealed my lips with his in a much more intense kiss than I had just given him. From the corner of my eye, I saw Dad had returned and was smiling from ear-to-ear.

We ended the kiss and I felt completely embarrassed when I realized Dad was watching. He laughed when I turned away and couldn't look at him. "I'm happy for you, (Y/n). It's about damn time."

I spun on my heels. "Is it because I've never had a boyfriend before now?"

"Yes! This is your first relationship. You turned away all the boys that came knocking on the door."

"Most fathers would be happy about that."

"I'm not 'most fathers'. My baby girl deserves to be happy."

I smile and tightened my grip on Markus' hand. "Thanks, Dad."
