|Daniel x Reader|

A/n: I apologize for the lateness of this one shot. I'm sick with the stomach flu right now. My doctor said I should be well by Friday, but I still feel like a bus hit me. Also, I'll be on vacation next week and won't be uploading. Hopefully, I won't be sick over vacation. I hope you all enjoy this next chapter! Love you all!!!

~(Y/n)'s POV~

"More deadlines. Great..." I huff, checking the emails from my editor. Tossing my pen across the room, I let out an infuriating wail. My voice bounced off the walls of my apartment, making it seem my shout was much louder. I stood up from my desk and flopped down on the couch, head buried in a pillow. Another scream escaped me, but it was muffled by the soft fabric of the pillow.

Turning my head, I stare at the blank television and felt my eyes were drooping. Before I could close them, Daniel placed a comforting hand on my back. "You need to rest, (Y/n). You're worrying too much about these deadlines and it's affecting your health."

"If I don't finish the next volume by Saturday, my editor's gonna flip!" I readjusted myself on the couch so I could sit up and meet Daniel's worried gaze. "I'll finish three pages then rest. How does that sound?"

Daniel shook his head. "No. Your health is top priority right now, (Y/n)."

Suddenly, my phone rang and I saw the screen light up with my editor's name. The device vibrated on the surface of my desk as it continued to ring. Getting up to answer the phone, I sigh with annoyance. Before I could grab and pick it up, Daniel snatched the device and held it out of my reach. "Daniel, I need to take this call."

"Go rest, (Y/n). I will handle Mr. Hopkins."

Seeing as my arguing was getting me nowhere, I decided to listen to Daniel and shuffled to the bedroom to rest. Before I closed the door, I could hear Jack's voice from here. He never was one to control his temper, but when he was angry, he'd always shout at the top of his lungs to get his message across to any and every one. Daniel was unfazed at his booming voice as I heard Jack cursing the android. From here, I saw his LED flicker from yellow to red before returning back to blue as he was given the chance to finally get a word across to Jack.

"I apologize, Mr. Hopkins. (Y/n) is sick and won't be able to attend tomorrow's meeting. She has come down with a stomach virus."

"If she isn't at the meeting by eight tomorrow morning, she can forget about ever contacting me again!"

Daniel hung up and placed my phone back on the desk. I closed the door before he learned I was eavesdropping and crawled onto the soft sheet of my bed. Crashing my head on the pillows, I close my eyes and fall asleep within minutes.

-An Hour Later-

"(Y/n)?" Daniel gently shook me awake. I opened my groggy eyes slowly before letting out a content sigh and getting up. "Dinner's ready."

"What time is it?" I question. Glancing at my alarm clock, it was a few minutes past six. "Glad you woke me up. Who knows how long I would've slept." Daniel smiled as we left the room and meandered into the kitchen. Sitting on the table was (f/d). I wiped a fake tear from my eye as I placed a hand on Daniel's arm. "You know how to make a girl happy after a shitty day."

"I went out and bought the ingredients this morning while you were working. I don't think you realized I left."

"I... had no idea. Guess I must've been so absorbed in sketching that I completely blocked everything else out." I sat down and thanked him as I began eating the delicious meal. Daniel sat next to me and we talked as I ate. The conversation bounced between subjects at random and had no correlation whatsoever.

After dinner, I cleaned the dishes with Daniel. He tried to keep all the dishes away from me, but I wouldn't allow him to do them all by himself. With the dishes scrubbed, washed, and dried, the android stored them as I was too short to reach the top two shelves. "As always, your tallness has graced this kitchen. If you weren't here, those two top shelves would be completely empty and collecting dust. There's no way I'm standing on the counter just to put dishes away. I'm too scared of falling."

Daniel smiled as he stashed the final dish. "I'm glad I can be of assistance to you, (Y/n)."

I pull on his arm and bring him closer, placing a kiss on his cheek. "You're family, Daniel. Don't ever forget that. You'll always have a home with me." I pecked him on the other cheek before pulling away. "Now, I'm gonna take a shower and get comfortable in my pajamas."

"I've already left a towel in the bathroom for you," the android said. I thanked him and headed to the bathroom for a long, relaxing shower.

~3rd Person POV~

Daniel watched as (Y/n) entered the bathroom and closed the door behind her. The android spotted the pen the woman had tossed across the room earlier and picked it up. Walking over to her desk, Daniel saw the next pages of her upcoming volume scattered about. Placing the pen snuggly with the others, he organized the comic pages. Underneath her current work, the machine saw an unfamiliar piece. Setting aside the papers, he picked up the strange piece and examined the page. At the top was the name of the piece.

Clockwork of the Heart

Daniel read the title over and over again. He was familiar with all of (Y/n)'s works, but he had never heard of this one. Curious, the android searched the drawers and found more pages that went with the title. He peered at the drawings and saw what seemed to be an android and a human holding hands. The two were walking down the street and receiving vulgar comments from bystanders who glared in their direction. Even the children were disdained at the sight of the android and woman.

Glancing at the next page, it was the two of them kissing each other in front of everyone. An odd sensation rushed to Daniel's chest at the sight of an android and human kissing. Though it was a drawing, the image brought an unfamiliar emotion to the machine's metallic heart. Something inside of him snapped and he quickly placed the papers back in the drawer. Shutting it with a slam, Daniel was now hunched over the desk.

A few minutes later, a voice brought him back to reality. "Are you okay, Daniel?"

Hearing (Y/n)'s voice, he turned and forced a smile. "I'm fine, (Y/n)."

The moment her worried expression didn't change, Daniel knew he was caught in a lie. "This is the first time you've ever lied. Did something happen while I was in the shower?"

Knowing he couldn't hide it from (Y/n), Daniel met her (e/c) gaze. "I was organizing your desk when I found this." The android held up the cover of Clockwork of the Heart.

"Oh, I see..." The young woman mumbles, taking the paper from him. "I plan on sharing the idea with Jack tomorrow. Hopefully, he'll approve and I can start on something fresh. If he doesn't agree, I'm dumping his ass and finding a new editor. He's an asshole, anyways."

"You heard the conversation?"

"Of course I did. Jack is the loudest person on this damn planet. You could hear him from China without any issues," (Y/n) exaggerates with a snort of laughter.

Daniel smiled at her words, but it soon transformed into a frown. "You plan to attend the meeting?"

"It'll only last an hour at most. After it's over, I'll head home and do nothing but rest. Are you okay with that?"

"Yes."

(Y/n) smiled in relief and headed to her desk. She sat the page down and glanced at the clock. "It's already eight? Well, I better go to bed since I've got to be up at six so I have time to get ready before the meeting. I'll see you in the morning, Daniel. Don't do anything too crazy while I'm asleep," she tease the android.

"No promises, (Y/n)," he said, playing along.

"Good night, Daniel."

~(Y/n)'s POV~

-Next Morning-

I woke up two minutes before my alarm went off. Not wanting to fall back into the clutches of the sandman, I forced my body out from under the sheets and prepared for the day ahead. Dressed in my usual attire, I exit my room and was greeted by the smell of breakfast wafting through the air. My stomach growled at the scrumptious smell and I wandered into the kitchen with a smile plastered to my face. "Good morning, Daniel. Breakfast smells amazing, as usual."

The android smiled in return and pulled out the chair. "Good morning, (Y/n). I hope you slept well. I took the liberty of gathering your things you need for today's meeting. They're in your bag by the door."

"I swear, you're too good to me," I comment, taking a bite of the fluffy pancakes Daniel had made. "And I'm completely jealous that you cook ten times better than me."

Finished with breakfast, I grabbed my car keys and bag. Daniel, as usual, accompanied to the front door. "Remember your promise?"

"Of course! Hopefully, I'll be home around nine-thirty. Then, I'll rest for the remainder of the day." Slinging the bag over my shoulder, I gave him the usual kiss on the cheek. "I'll be back in a couple of hours." When I saw his expression after the affectionate gesture, I saw a look I'd never seen him make. Knowing I didn't have time to question the android, I pushed away my curiosity and left.

-Mr. Hopkins' Office-

"'Bout time you got here," Jack seethed as I walked into his office.

"Get off your high horse, asshole. It's only ten 'til eight. Someone must've shoved something really pointy up your ass if you're already angry this early in the morning."

Jack clicked his tongue in annoyance. "The only reason I deal with your shitty attitude is because of how damn popular your comics are. Anyways, there's a rival editor joining us. She wants you to change your mind and allow her to become your editor. But, I know you won't."

I smirked. "We'll see about that. If I can trade a pebble for a diamond, I won't hesitate."

"You bitch—!"

"Apologies for interrupting this heated conversation," a woman said as she entered the office and sat next to me. "I'm Sarah King. A pleasure to finally meet you, Miss (L/n)."

"The pleasure's all mine. Jack explained to me why you were here."

"Good. That saves me a ton of explaining."

Jack cleared his throat, rudely interrupting us. "So, (Y/n), show us what you have in mind for your next series."

I pulled out the rough draft of the first volume and laid it on Jack's desk. The grumpy middle-aged man grabbed the pages roughly, earning a glare from me and Sarah. As he flipped through the pages, his scowl grew bigger and bigger. "What the hell is this shit?"

"My next series, Jack—Clockwork of the Heart." My glare only grew sharper as he criticized my work.

"What is it about?" Sarah asked excitedly.

"An android and a human falling in love. While the whole town is against their union, they still love each other from the bottoms of their hearts."

"Very interesting and unique, Miss (L/n)," she compliments.

"On the contrary, it's a vulgar idea!" Jack snaps.

"You wouldn't know a good idea if it were a snake that bit you and poisoned your ass," I scoff.

Sarah turned in her chair and didn't allow Jack to begin on his warpath. "I'd love to become your editor. I'll gladly do what Mr. Hopkins fears. I believe this will be even more successful than your current series."

My eyes bounced between Sarah and Jack before I answered. "Well, Miss King, I gladly welcome you as my new editor. And Jack," my eyes land on my now ex-editor. "Good luck finding someone who can stand your shitty attitude and asinine treatment. I should've done this years ago."

Jack fumbled with his words, unable to form an intelligent sentence. Sarah smiled joyfully and grabbed the rough draft with care. "I look forward to working with you, (Y/n). Would it be alright if we discuss the details at a later date?"

"That's perfectly fine. I've got someone at home that I made a promise to and plan to keep it."

"Here's my card. Text me a day and time that'll be good for you. You've no idea how happy I am right now."

"You're the salvation I've been looking for. I'll see you soon, Sarah. Have a wonderful day."

-Apartment-

I was back home after being gone for only an hour. The moment I stepped through the door, I searched for Daniel. When I found him on the patio, I rushed to his side and hugged him from behind. "I've got a new editor and she loves my idea!"

Daniel turned in my embrace so he was now facing me. Lifting my head up, I met his gray gaze with my (e/c) one. Suddenly, he bent down slightly and kissed me gingerly on the lips. My eyes widened in shock as he pulled away. Daniel then wrapped his arms around me. "That comic... It was the two of us, wasn't it?"

I placed my hands on his back, crinkling his shirt as I clutched it in my hands. "Yeah, it is. I guess you saw the kiss in the rough draft."

"Yes. It caused a strange sensation in my chest. I'm not sure why, but... I really wanted to kiss you after seeing the sketch. It was something I'd never expected to feel."

"You've become deviant after seeing one drawing?" I question.

He nods. "Will you get rid of me after knowing I've become a deviant, (Y/n)?"

"Hell no! Besides my mom and dad, you're my only family. There's no way I would throw you out onto the streets just for experiencing human emotions. I'm not that cold-hearted. I mean, I do have mean-streaks here and there, but I'd never do that to you. I love you too much, Daniel."

"Then, I can stay?"

I nodded and rested my head on his shoulder. "I'm not letting you go anytime soon."
