~3rd Person POV~
"Fill me in on what happened," Hank told Connor as he drove.
"At exactly five thirty-two p.m., a slew of murders were reported from the Castle Lakes apartment complex. Bodies were found in the dumpster located behind the office building with no traces of fingerprints or a single trail of blood."
"So, we're either dealing with a deviant or someone who's good at concealing their tracks. Guess we gotta question the residence of the complex. That'll take all damn night," Hank groans.
"I've narrowed it down to the three and four hundredth building. That'll make our suspect list smaller. Those two buildings are the closest to the main office and would be easy to hide a body without being caught by other residences."
"How many bodies?"
"Three."
"Damn. Do we know anything else?"
"No. They are sweeping the scene as we speak and hope to find more clues while we question the residences."
Hank sighs, "Let's get this shit over with."
Arriving at Castle Lakes, the partners exit the vehicle and approached the scene. Cops were crawling everywhere as they desperately searched for a lead. They met with the lead detective before beginning their rounds. While Hank handled the three hundredth building, Connor dealt with the four hundredth.
Knocking on the first door, he was greeted by a middle-aged man. The smell of cigarettes and alcohol wafted through the apartment as Connor received a whiff of the pungent brew. The android scanned the man and saw he was intoxicated. "I am Connor, RK800 sent by CyberLife."
"What the fuck do you want, ya damn machine?"
"Only to ask a few questions then I'll be on my way. May I enter, Mr. (L/n)?" The man grumbled incoherent curses as he let the android in.
Now inside the apartment, Connor realized how much of a pigsty it was. His nose scrunched up as the brew of sickening odors greeted him more strongly than before. The android heard talking from one of the bedrooms down the hall. From his spot in the living room, he could see an open door and inside was a little girl playing with a stuffed (f/a). Glancing towards the father, he realized he wasn't being watched and walked down the hallway.
Connor knocked on the door, startling the little girl and causing her stuffed animal to fall out of her hands. She hid on the other side of the bed and peered over the sheets as the android entered her room. Connor picked up the stuffed animal and slowly approached the child. "My name is Connor. What's yours?"
The little girl gradually climbed onto the bed and pulled at a strand of her (h/c) hair. "(Y/n)."
"A pleasure to meet you, (Y/n). Who's this?" Connor gestured to the stuffed (f/a).
"That's (P/n). (He's/She's) my best and only friend."
Hearing her words brought an unfamiliar pain to his chest. He thought it would be fruitless to ask such a young girl, but Connor decided to ask a few questions. "Do you know why I'm here?"
She nods and takes (P/n) from Connor as he handed (him/her) over to the little girl. "People were killed and their bodies were found behind the office."
"Do you have any clue who would do such a thing?" Connor sat on the bed and watched as she hugged the stuffed animal.
"If I did tell you, Daddy would get really angry and hit me," she whispers.
Connor scanned the small child and saw multiple lacerations on her arms and upper back. He already knew who the culprit was behind such injuries. By the father's image, Connor could tell he wasn't meant to be one nor was he qualified. Unlike how Hank saw his deceased son, this father was treating his daughter as if she were garbage and didn't deserve to be in this world.
Heavy footsteps resounded from the hallway. Connor glanced towards the door and saw the father standing in the doorway. His cheeks were flared red from all the liquor he had been drinking and his footsteps were uneven. Connor could tell the man was drunk and knew he was an angry drunk. The man removed his belt and eyed (Y/n) as if she were an object to take his rage out on. "Get your ass over here, (Y/n)!"
The little girl jumps off the bed and runs to the farthest corner away from the door. Before he could take another step, Connor stood in his way. "I can't let you go any further, Mr. (L/n)."
"Get outta my way, ya fuckin' piece of shit!" He growled. The man tried to punch the machine, but Connor quickly dodged and twisted his arm behind his back. He fell to his knees as the android's grip tightened.
"I will not stand by while you harm your daughter. This is child abuse and I will be reporting your actions." Connor then glanced at the frightened (Y/n) as he contacted Hank. He told him to hurry over and the Lieutenant did without question.
"What the hell are you doing, Connor?" Hank asked as he arrived and saw the android restraining a much more muscular man than himself.
"Stopping this man from hurting his daughter," Connor said, eyes still locked on (Y/n).
Hank saw the shivering girl and approached her slowly. He sent her a gentle smile and spoke softly to her. "Hey, sweetheart. You're gonna be alright." He opened up his arms and (Y/n) ran into them. She wrapped her arms around Hank's neck as he picked her up. Holding her close reminded him of how he would used to hug Cole every night before tucking him into bed.
Connor held Mr. (L/n) at bay while Hank carried the little girl out of the dirty apartment. Once they were outside, Hank waited for the android. He smiled and asked (Y/n) about her stuffed (f/a), earning a smile from her in return as she showed him the plushie. They talked until Connor returned. "Her father will be dealt with at the station."
"What about the questioning?"
"I believe we've caught our suspect."
"You serious?"
Connor then met (Y/n)'s gaze. "Yes. Our witness is right here."
Hank glanced between the android and the little girl. "She's a kid, Connor. What could she tell us?"
"(Y/n) knows her father best. With him in custody, she won't need to fear him and she'll be able to tell us what she couldn't with him around."
"Guess we're heading back to the station." Hank then handed over (Y/n) to Connor, who was at a complete loss. The Lieutenant chuckled and patted his shoulder. "Got no kid seat in the car. You're gonna have to hold her."
Connor remembered how he was carrying (Y/n) and held her the same way. She locked her arms around his neck as they returned to Hank's car.
In the front seat, the android sat the child in his lap. (Y/n) hugged her plush (f/a) and leaned back against Connor's chest. This was the first time since he left CyberLife that he has interacted with a child. The trio talked as the drive to the station was prolonged due to traffic. As Connor talked to the little girl about her favorite things, he felt a warm sensation in his chest. It was pleasant and brought a smile to his face.
Arriving back at the station, Connor carries (Y/n) inside and sits her in the seat beside Hank's desk. The Lieutenant sits in his chair while the android stood next to the little girl. Connor glanced down at (Y/n) and talked to her softly. "Tell us what you couldn't tell me earlier."
"Daddy is a heavy gambler. He didn't win today and he killed those men because he lost to them. After he killed them, he dragged them out and to the garbage behind the office. He told me if I said anything, he would kill me."
Hank reached out and ran a finger over the red marks on her arm. "What're these from?"
"When Daddy gets drunk, he hits me with his belt. He didn't get to tonight because Connor stopped him," (Y/n) said, grabbing onto the android's jacket. Anger bubbled in Hank's vein. He couldn't stand it when children were treated horribly. He held his tongue and refused to curse in front of (Y/n). The little girl moved her hand from Connor's jacket to Hank's sleeve. She tugged on it gently as she spoke. "Where am I gonna stay?"
"Do you have any other family?" The little girl shook her head with a frown. Hank leaned back in his chair, delving deep into thought. After a few minutes of silence, the Lieutenant smiled. "You can stay with me."
(Y/n)'s eyes lit up with joy. Connor saw the gentle smile the Lieutenant rarely showed anyone. He knew Hank had a soft spot for children, but he didn't expect it to be this soft.
The sound of shouting and struggling drew their attention. Looking towards the cells, they saw a couple of officers were having difficulty restraining Mr. (L/n) and placing him in incarceration. His raging gaze was directed towards (Y/n) as he struggled against the officers. The muscular man was able to knock one guard out and steal his gun. He shot the other officer and set his sights on (Y/n). Connor quickly reacted and grabbed her in his arms to protect her from the raging man.
The father fired a round and the android's arm was grazed as he turned his back to him to act as (Y/n)'s shield. Hank grabbed his own pistol and shot Mr. (L/n) in the shoulder. The middle-aged man screamed out in pain, dropping the gun and allowing officers to restrain him. Hank glared daggers as he watched the father be dragged into a cell and locked away. Connor kept his hold on (Y/n) as he faced the Lieutenant. "It would be best if we headed to your house, Lieutenant."
"Yeah... Yeah, let's go," Hank sighs.
At the Lieutenant's house, (Y/n) immediately ran over to Sumo and hugged the St. Bernard. The large dog woofed and wagged his tail as he licked the girl's cheek. She giggled at the ticklish sensation and hugged him tighter. Hank and Connor smiled at the sight. The Lieutenant chuckled as Sumo rolled over on his back and (Y/n) laid on his stomach.
"Would it be alright if I visited (Y/n)?" Connor asked out of the blue.
"You don't need to ask for permission, Connor. I'm sure she'd love to see you. After all, you saved her from an abusive father twice in one night."
Connor saw the look in Hank's eyes, recognizing it as endearment. "Do you wish to adopt (Y/n)?"
The question caught the older man off-guard, but he already had an answer. "If I can't find any traces of another family member, I just might."
"I think you should. You are good with kids and I believe you could benefit with (Y/n) around."
"And why's that?" Hank raised his chin slightly.
"She makes you smiles. I know she won't replace Cole, but you deserve a second chance at family, Lieutenant."
(Y/n) ran over, (P/n) sitting on top of Sumo's back as the dog followed her. She hugged Connor's leg and stared up into his brown eyes. "Would you like to be my big brother? I've always wanted one."
Connor kneeled down to (Y/n)'s height and patted her on the head. "Yes, I would."
She then turned to Hank and pointed at him. "Daddy?"
Hank's eyes widened in bewilderment. He cleared his throat before answering. "I'm not—"
"Yes, he'll be your new father, (Y/n)," Connor replied, cutting off the Lieutenant.
"Connor, I can't—"
"Yes, you can, Lieutenant. I saw it today at the apartment complex. You're worthy of being a caring father, especially one for (Y/n)."
Hank couldn't rebuttal and rubbed the back of his neck in silence. After a pregnant pause from both parties, the older man sighed. He picked up (Y/n) and stared into her (e/c) eyes. "I'll be your new dad."
She smiled happily and tried her best to hug him. Hank hugged her small form and heard a jubilant bark from Sumo. (Y/n) received a new father and a brother all in one night. She couldn't have been more happy. She finally had a new family.
