Chapter Thirty-Two: Kamski

The snow fell softly from the sky, mesmerizing as it always was. Everything was brighter due to the white contrast. It was almost magical, in its own way.

I leaned against the front of the car as Hank took a call, waiting as patiently as I could. The androids had rioted in the streets, and everyone was on edge, including myself. Though in all honesty, I was intrigued by the Deviants rising up against the chains human society had put them in. The riot was peaceful — no violence was reported, other than the violence the humans did upon the Deviants.

Maybe the Deviants aren't the problem.

Connor got out of the car, slowly walking towards Hank as he hung up the phone.

"Is everything alright, lieutenant?"  His voice held some concern.

"— He got attacked by a bunch of deviants. Says he was saved by Markus himself."

"Chris?" I jumped off the car, walking towards them, genuine concern for our fellow officer, and friend.

"He's in shock, but he's alive."

I smiled slightly, thankful Chris hadn't been killed. I noticed Hank seemed conflicted. "Hank, what is it?"

"It's nothing." He mumbled as he knocked on the door. "Let's get this over with."

I knew that was a lie, but I decided against pushing him further.

We were greeted by one of the most beautiful woman — Android I had ever seen.

"You're really pretty." I told her with a smile. The Android let out a small laugh, "Thank you. I will tell him you've arrived."

"Well, Connor. You're literally about to meet your maker. How're you feeling?" Hank sat on a chair, looking over at him.

"It will be interesting to meet him in person." Connor said as the looked at the portrait of Kamski on the wall.

"He isn't very full of himself," I rolled my eyes sarcastically. "Though I must admit, I wish I had enough money for a place like this."

"Pssh, if you lived in a place like this you'd have fifty cats." Hank snorted, "Crazy fucking cat lady."

"Hey! I'll have you know my limit is 5 cats at once." I stuck my tongue out at him teasingly as the lady came back to fetch us.

She took us into a room with big open windows that showed the water and snow outside, and in the centre of the room was a pool. Two more of the blonde androids were in the pool talking while a man swam laps.

I let out an unsure breath as the man climbed out of the pool, putting on a robe. "What can I do for you?"

"I'm Tasha." I added quietly, noting that Kamski looked at me with an intrigued expression — he wasn't an unattractive man by any means, but the way he held himself was... off putting.

"Sir, we're investigating deviants, and we know you left CyberLife years ago but I was hoping you might be able to tell us something we don't know."

Kamski smiled slightly, "Deviants. Fascinating things, aren't they? Perfect beings with infinite intelligence. And now they have free will..." He paused, looking over at his android. "Androids are so superior to us, confrontation was inevitable.

"Ironic, isn't it?"

"We need to know what causes them to become deviant." Connor said to him. "Do you know anything that could help us?"

Kamski seemed to think on this a moment, looking between us before settling on Connor. "What about you Connor?"

"It's not about me Mr. Kamski." Connor replied, a little defensively, "All I want is to solve this case."

Kamski chuckled, "That's what your programmed to say. But you..." He walked up to Connor, only a foot away. "What do you really want?"

Connor seemed conflicted as he took longer to respond than usual. "What I want is... not important."

Kamski hummed in reply, "Such a noble answer. Let's test something, shall we?"

He reached into a drawer, grabbing a pistol and showing it to us. He walked towards Connor, handing the gun to him. "Chloe." He called to his android, and she obeyed, kneeling down in front of Connor.

"Shoot this Android in the head, and I'll tell you what you want to know. Don't, and you'll leave here learning nothing from me."

"No fucking way is that happening." Hank said.

"You can't be serious!" I shook my head in disbelief.

"Oh, but I am." Kamski smiled unapologetically. "What will you do, Connor? Your mission is to catch Deviants, but do you see this android as a living being, or a piece of plastic and hardware?"

Connor's LED was flashing between red and yellow, almost too quick to see a difference between the two.

"Connor, you don't have to do this... we'll find Jericho another way." I said as I looked over at him, unable to hide the fear from my voice. I was afraid... afraid Connor would shoot this woman for the sake of the mission.

This made Kamski smile.

Connor stood there for what felt like forever, holding the gun to the girl's head.

Connor was silent as he held the gun back out to Kamski.

"How fascinating. You've chosen to spare an androids life, rather than follow your mission." He stepped closer to Connor, causing me to become defensive. "A deviant hunter... who is he himself a deviant."

"Back the fuck off, Kamski." I glared at him as I held my hand over my gun holster.

Kamski glanced over to me, stepping uncomfortably close. "What's this I see?" He leaned in, looking from my face to Connor's, "An Android in love with a human."

"Get out of my face, asshole." I spit at him, not looking away as I glared him down.

Kamski smirked at my reaction, "And a human in love with an android. The Romeo and Juliet of our modern society."

"Step away from her." Connor said, his rare anger flaring up as he watched Kamski, leaning in close to me.

"You say you aren't deviant, and yet..." He reached out to touch my face, but before he could Connor grabbed his wrist.

Kamski smirked wider, "You love this woman. Love, is an emotion, Connor. You chose to spare this Androids life, you showed empathy— another emotion..." Kamski pulled his wrist out of Connor's grasp, smiling. "What more will it take for you to see who you truly are?"

"Let's go you two!" Hank yelled from the door, impatiently waiting. No doubt wishing he could beat Kamski.

I turned away from Kamski, following Hank out of the building with Connor trailing behind.

As we left the building, I noticed Connor still looked on edge, his LED a blinking yellow.

"Why didn't you shoot?" Hank asked.

"And I couldn't. That's all." Connor turned away from us.

"You're always saying you'll do whatever it takes to accomplish your mission. We could've learned something but instead you chose to let it go..."

"Yeah, I know what I should've done! I told you, I couldn't!" Connor looked between Hank and I a moment. "I'm sorry. Okay?"

Hank smiled, patting Connor on the shoulder. "Maybe you did the right thing."

As he walked off, Connor looked more conflicted than ever. He seemed lost and confused, completely unsure of himself.

I reached forward, grabbing his arm as gently as I could.

"Are you going to be alright?"
