Chapter Thirty-Four: The Deviant Leader
Tasha's POV
Connor had been acting... different the past few days. Talking to Kamski lead us nowhere, and Connor seemed not only stressed, but to be also distancing himself from me. He never spoke to me about his meetings with CyberLife, but I was under the assumption that was where his troubles lied.
He always updated them on the progress of the deviant mission, but it never seemed to shake him. Now though, Connor was acting different.
Almost robotic...
*Buzz*
*Buzz*
I was drawn out of my thoughts as my phone buzzed. That's weird. Who the hell is calling now?
Unknown ID
"Hello?"
"Pier 81. Come alone. If you tell anyone, I'll know."
That voice...
The deviant leader?
"Wait, who—" They immediately hung up, causing me to narrow my eyebrows as I stared at my phone.
My one day off work. Can't a girl get some peace and quiet?
I sighed, grabbing my jacket as I walked into the snowy outdoors. I knew I should've called Hank, and Connor, but I didn't want to. I wanted to prove to them I can accomplish tasks on my own. With a last look at my house I turned away, taking a cab to Pier 81.
When I arrived at the pier, I held my gun tightly in my grasp as I walked by the shipment containers. "Hello? Is anyone there?"
I jumped as I heard rattling in a dark corner. "Hello?!"
"You tried to help that deviant on the roof. Why?" A voice came from the darkness, I turned, pointing my gun towards the sound.
"How do you know about that?"
"I know a lot of things." The voice said. "Put your weapon on the ground."
I was hesitant. "How do I know you won't just kill me when I'm unarmed?"
The voice scoffed, but in a soft way. "If we wanted you dead, you'd be dead. I can promise you, no harm will come to you if you do as I say."
I slowly set my gun on the ground, kicking it away. I felt hands grab my wrists, holding me still while the figure came out of the darkness. I struggled slightly against the grasp, but I knew I couldn't fight an Android. Let alone multiple.
The man had deeper skin, a scar along his face, one blue eye, and one green eye.
"Markus, I presume?"
He nodded, "And you're Tasha Price, the well known deviant hunter." I was a known deviant hunter, sure, but I didn't think I was nearly as known as Connor. "I'm sure you understand, we have to take precautions." He said, almost looking guilty at me.
"I would do the exact same thing."
Markus put a dark bag over my head and I was drug along to a distant building.
"I'm going to ask you again," Markus spoke as another android took off the mask covering my eyes. "Why would you, a human, want to let a deviant go?"
"I don't want anyone to get hurt. No one deserves to be treated the way androids have been, especially the past few months... You're as human as I am."
Markus stepped closer, looking at me with curious eyes. "You actually believe that."
I nodded slowly. "Yes, I do."
"If you believe that then why have you chased down Deviants?"
"It's my job." I replied, biting my lip. "I have to."
"You choose to." Markus retorted. "We all make choices, Tasha. You've chosen to hunt down Deviants, knowing they'd be reassembled."
He's not wrong.
"I... I have to. If I don't... CyberLife will take him away."
"Take who away?" Markus asked, completely intrigued. "Who could be important enough that you'd throw away your own beliefs?"
"Connor... his name is Connor." I said quietly, "CyberLife will deassemble him if we don't keep catching the deviants."
"He's... an Android?"
I nodded. "Hes the love of my life. And if I can can help create a future where neither of us has to fear CyberLife, then I will do whatever it takes."
Markus was silent for a moment. "You... you're in love with an Android." Markus scoffed slightly, smiling to himself before untying my Restraints. "I have to admit, I never thought I'd hear that."
"What are you doing?!" North cried. "We can't trust her!"
"You didn't see what I saw." Markus said as he looked at me thoughtfully. He grabbed onto North's arm, and their skin slowly faded to reveal their plastic casings.
"That's so cool." I said to myself as I watched them exchange glances. North looked at me, softer than before.
"Who'd have thought a human deviant hunter would be the one wanting to protect Deviants." She smiled slightly as she walked away.
"You need to show the humans that all you want is equality." I said as I looked around at the group of androids.
"How do we tell a bunch of maniacs that?" North asked, "All humans know is War."
"You're right, but not every human is like that. The way you've shown your desire for freedom so far has drove the public to lean in your favour. The peace march? It's send a message. Fire is catching in the hearts of humans, and so far, you have many in favour of your freedom. If we can get the majority to feel this way..."
"It could be a shift in power." Markus finished for me.
"Exactly."
Markus clasped me on the shoulder, a small smile on his face. "You need to go back and act like everything's normal. When we need you, I'll call on you."
I nodded, smiling up at him. "Thank you for trusting me."
Two of the Deviants helped me to the nearest highway, then I was alone. I walked for twenty blocks until I was far enough away from the pier, calling a taxi.
As soon as I entered the taxi I began to cough as a grey smoke came through the vents.
"What— fuck."
In a single moment, everything went dark.
A/N: EYYYYYYY! Markus is in the hoooouse!
