Chapter Ten: Something isn't Right Here

When I woke, I felt Connor's arm tighten around my waist due to my movements. Or maybe because he wanted to.

Yeah, that's likely.

I smiled to myself, slowly turning around so I could face him.

My green eyes met his chocolate brown ones, and I swore I could see emotions flicker through his.

"Did you watch me sleep all night?" I teased, unable to keep the grin off of my face.

"Yes." Connor replied honestly, his fingers on my waist gently caressing the skin there. "You looked very... peaceful."

"You being here helped." I admitted, blushing slightly as I gazed into his eyes.

Connor was silent for a moment as he continued to stare at me.

"And... you look very beautiful when you sleep."

I felt my cheeks turn red from his compliment, "Oh, thank — thank you, Connor."

"May I ask a personal question?" Connor's voice was quiet, making me frown slightly.

"Of course you can, Connor." I smiled, reaching my hand up to caress his cheek.

"Why do you treat me like I'm human?"

I bit my lip in concentration as I pondered his question. "I treat you like a human because that's what I see you as." I replied honestly, smiling softly. "I never, for one second have ever saw you as anything but living."

"I'm a machine." Connor said quietly, staring at me, almost as if he was fighting internally with himself.

"Not to me." I admitted, blushing more as I sat up. "You're more than that to me, Connor."

He was silent for a moment, then I noticed his indicator blinked a few times.

"I must leave." Connor said after a moment, his expression unreadable.

"Oh, right, you have work." I frowned slightly, "Yeah, I guess you should probably go." I forced a smile as I walked with him to the door. "The world needs you."

I let out a small breath as I watched him fix his tie.

"Connor?" I said as he stepped through the door way.

"Yes?" He looked back at me for a moment, that same unreadable expression on his face.

I leaned up, kissing his cheek gently. "Thank you for staying with me."

"You don't need to thank me." Connor blinked at me a few times, "Have a good day, Tasha."

I frowned slightly as he turned to walk away. I enjoyed spending time alone with him — it was rare to not have Hank teasing us. It was nice.

I was taken away from my thoughts as Connor turned back to me, leaning down to brush his lips ever so slightly against my cheek.

When he pulled back, Connor had the most adorable smile on his face... it was rare for him to smile, and when he did it was never like this.

He walked away after that, leaving me alone with his recent action.

I reached up, touching my cheek where his lips had just been. The skin felt hot as my heart fluttered.

I shook my head, trying to rid myself of the thoughts I had of Connor. I didn't want to love him, I didn't want to care.

But I did.

Boy, was I in deep.

Days off were often the most stress inducing, simply because I was left alone.

I'm my worst enemy.

The day dragged on slowly, my mind reacting with negative thoughts as it always did when my emotions were conflicted.

Not that I missed spending time with Connor.

No, not at all.

••••

I sighed as I turned on the news, taking a bite of three day old pizza. "This probably won't make me sick." I mumbled to myself as I finished my fourth piece.

"This just breaking: An Android has been shot on Benuvista Avenue."

I felt my heart sink as I rushed towards the TV.

"What?" I turned towards the TV, "Volume up!"

"At 9:52pm a CyberLife Android was shot down. The perpetrator has been taken into custody.

It couldn't be Connor... right?

I picked up my phone, immediately dialing Hank.

"Yeah, Kiddo?" Hank answered, from the sounds coming from behind him I knew he was at the bar.

"Have- have you seen Connor?!"

"He left about an hour ago — why? What's wrong?"

I shook my head as I felt my whole body shake, "N-nothing. If you see him— c-call me okay?!" I hung up before Hank could reply, grabbing my jacket.

If there was even the slightest possibly Connor was the Android that had been shot, I had to know.

And I had to know now.

When I arrived at the crime scene, I was greeted by Gavin. "Well, well. What brings such a beautiful detective to come in on her night off?"

"Shut it, prick." I mumbled as I pushed past him, walking over to the Android on the ground.

I let out a breath of relief when I saw that the Android wasn't Connor, and was in fact just a worker Android.

"Thank god." I whispered to myself, rubbing my eyes that had tears in them.

"Detective?"

I turned, staring at Connor with wide eyes. "Connor," I breathed, running to him, unable to stop myself. I wrapped my arms around his waist, pulling his body as close to mine as humanly possible.

Connor was hesitant, his hands slowly finding their way to my waist. "Tasha — What is it?"

"N-nothing." I lied, closing my eyes to try to keep the tears from falling. "I just... I'm really glad you're here."

"You... you had the day off." Connor said as he pulled back to look at me. "Why are you here?"

"I just — uh — I saw the news and I wanted to check it out." I lied, rubbing the back of my neck.

Connor looked at me with furrowed eyebrows. "Tasha, Androids can tell when humans are lying."

"Connor, I just... I was worried alright?"

"Why?"

God, sometimes I hated how oblivious he could be.

"I was worried about you, Connor... I thought that maybe..." I shook my head. "It doesn't matter. I'm gonna go home."

Connor made no objection as I walked away from him, walking out into the pouring rain as I let tears fall down my face.
