Chapter Seventy-One: Learn to Let Go
Tasha's eyes gazed up into Connor's as he linked his fingers with hers. He was terrified that all of this would be too much and could potentially kill her, but he knew it was their only option left. She would relive everything. All the pain, all the suffering she had endured... but also love. She would feel the love that had grown between them. The love she had for Hank. For her parents. For Markus. For North. For everyone Tasha had ever loved in her life.
As their synthetic skin disappeared, Connor held her hand tighter, feeling Tasha let down her wall and invite him into her mind.
Tasha?
Connor called out to her, but he found himself alone in their house. Everything was black and white. And certain objects weren't even in their home currently.
Is this from when she was a child?
Connor walked around the house, finding Tasha in the backyard with her parents. He smiled at the scene. Never before had he seen her so happy, so innocently happy with no concerns. She couldn't be more than six years old. He had seen the odd photo of her as a child, but actually reliving this moment with her made him feel even more of a connection with her.
Connor had only seen one photo of Tasha with her parents, so to see them up close was also something he didn't know he needed. He wondered if they would've accepted him as their daughter did. Would they have approved of their daughter dating an Android?
The thoughts left him he watched Tasha run around the yard with her parents, a soft chuckle leaving his lips.
They all look so happy.
Peaceful.
Connor wanted that for Tasha. He wanted nothing more than for her to be happy. But as he continued to watch them, something that could only be compared to guilt swelled in his chest.
I'll never be able to give her a full life. We won't be able to have kids. Or a family.
Connor pushed the thought aside.
There's no point in feeling sorry for myself right now. I have to find Tasha.
As the scene faded in front of him, Connor furrowed his brows as he tried to find any sign of Tasha throughout the darkness.
Where are you?
•••
At this point Connor and Tasha were both on the ground, she was sobbing and crying out in pain while he held her in his arms, their hands still linked. Even though they were connected, their minds were separating them, causing them to both see each other's memories.
The memories, the emotions flooded through them both like a hurricane. He felt everything she felt and vice versa.
*Flashback*
Connor's POV
Connor found himself thinking about the way Tasha looked at him when he got shot, she was so scared... but that fear turned into rage. His gaze found her form standing with her arms crossed, in a deep conversation with Hank.
That's unusual.
As the EMT was closing up his bullet wound, Tasha glanced over at him for a moment. Their eyes met, for a split second, before she turned back to Hank. Connor continued to gaze at her though, his mind drifting to the likelihood of her death had he not intervened. 85%. While his likelihood of being shut down by the shot was under 6%. Had Tasha waited for backup, neither of them would've gotten caught in the crossfire.
She's ruthless without her emotions.
Then, he recalled that Tasha had now been exposed as the first hybrid/cyborg because he failed.
I keep failing her. I'm so close to getting her back.
He could sense it. Every moment she spent with him, she yearned for him like he did her.
All of this is my fault. First her emotions, now this... she's in more danger now than ever.
As Connor walked over to Hank, he watched Tasha walked away, her back turned to them.
"Whatever you're doing, Connor — it's working." Hank smiled slightly, clasping him on the shoulder.
"I hate seeing her like this." Connor admitted as he got in the car with the lieutenant. "How am I supposed to protect her when she won't accept my help?"
*End flashback*
Tasha's POV
As Connor's memory faded I was pulled into a dark hole.
I then found myself running through a never ending hallway. Door after door I tried to escape, but it only looped back to the start.
Is this what my life's become? A never ending cycle?
I could hear voices. Faint. Very faint.
But they were there.
Calling to me.
What am I doing here?
I stopped running as I felt my chest tighten, an invisible wave hitting me so hard it knocked me against the wall, pushing me through it into another room.
I saw myself strapped into a car that was beginning to fill with water. Mother and father were in the front seat, but neither of them were moving.
"Mom?! Dad?! Why aren't you saying anything?" My younger self yelled at them as she struggled against the buckle that was holding her in the car that was rapidly filling with water.
When her parents didn't make a sound, she cried out. "Mommy! Daddy! Get up! You have to get up!"
I felt my entire body ache as I relived their death. The accident that I had pushed away for so long.
I've repressed so much about my parents...
After a long struggle, my younger self was able to get out of the buckle, and climb out of the back of the car that wasn't submerged.
"Mommy! Daddy! Please!" She cried as she looked back at her parents who were sinking into the water. "You got to get up!"
But it was no use. The car continued to sink deeper into the water while sirens could be heard coming closer and closer.
Tasha sobbed as an EMT was able to rescue her from the submerging car, getting her to shore safety.
"Please!" She struggled against the androids arms. "My parents! They're down there! You have to help them!"
I knew they were gone. They died on impact. But I didn't give up hope.
How foolish was I?
I was sobbing, holding onto my legs as I watched my younger self sit there, now an orphan.
An orphan.
After a while an old car came onto the scene as the paramedics were checking my vitals.
"Where the hell is she?!"
Hank.
Despite my crying, I couldn't help but smile at the memory of Hank frantically trying to fight past the police who were already on scene.
"Lieutenant, you —"
"Get the hell out of my way!"
The police officer sighed, letting Hank past, who then ran up to me. "Are you alright, kiddo?"
My younger self nodded, but she was still crying. "Hank they — they're gone! My parents are gone!"
Hank wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "Just breath, kid."
"You just need to breathe."
