Chapter Fourty-Seven: Breathe

When I woke I was attached to more machines, but I wasn't as afraid anymore. I was more so confused. I was met with brown eyes, a cool hand touching my face, bringing me closer to consciousness.

"Tasha." Connor breathed, a small smile on his face.

"Connor." I said softly after a moment, looking up at him with confused eyes.

I blinked my eyes a few times, trying to wrap my mind around the situation. I reached down, pulling the cords out of my arm. "Where am I?"

"CyberLife Tower." He explained, watching me with curiosity, but also fear. "What do you remember? Markus said when you woke up you didn't know what was happening."

I then noticed Markus standing behind him, arms crossed and brows creased in concentration.

"I... I don't know. I remember darkness and death. I remember feeling cold and empty. I remember a light... a bright light. I remember hearing a voice... your voice." I said, unable to look at him. "This is wrong. I shouldn't be here."

"Tasha —"

"I died, Connor!" His name fell from my mouth in an angry fire as I recalled the moments before I died.

The gunshot.

His sad, heartbroken eyes.

"I died... you shot me and I died." I said slowly as I tried to focus on the memory. "I... how am I here? How did you... how did you bring me back?"

Connor was silent as his fingers brushed mine.

"We... modified your body to bring you back." Markus leaned forward, surveying me. "Kamski helped us."

"That's impossible..."

"Tasha, what else do you remember?"

I was silent for a moment, trying to focus my thoughts. "I... it's all a blur. Everything before now is... wrong. It's like it was all a dream." My voice was quiet as I moved my hands. "This doesn't feel right... I don't feel right."

"It will take a while for your body to adjust to the enhancements — thyrium is pumped through your bloodstream, along with your human blood to keep your heart going."

Connor slowly placed his hand on my arm, forcing me to look up at him. "It's going to be okay."

"Is it?" I asked as I felt the stress in my body rise each moment of confusion. "Because right now I feel like my body is on overdrive."

"Just breathe." His brown eyes were impossible to not stare at, his other hand touching my face gently. "You'll be okay."

I slowly nodded, trying to slow my breathing. "So... what you're telling me is that I'm a cyborg."

"We've been using the term hybrid, but yes, essentially you are part android now." Markus replied, watching me with curiosity.

I hummed in response, "Any idea why my memories are... so out of place?"

"The memory loss and dysfunction most likely stems from your human parts reacting to your Android parts. Neither were made to work harmoniously so it may take time for both to function cooperatively together."

I held Connor's hand tight in my grasp, "How... how long have I been dead?"

"A few weeks... it's been a process to try to get your body to react at all to the enhancements."

I just nodded in reply.

"I'll leave you two to talk." Markus gave Connor a smile before leaving the room, shutting the door behind him.

I slid off the bed slowly, my legs wobbling ever so slightly as I stood. Connor was by my side immediately, his hands on my waist to help me stand.

I slowly allowed myself to look up at him, analyzing him.

He looks so worried.

"I thought I lost you forever." Connor said quietly as he rubbing his hands up my waist. "I thought—"

I reached my hands up, holding his face in my hands. "Connor — I'm here. I'm not going anywhere..." I smiled slightly as I gazed up at him. "I may not remember everything, but I remember you... How could I ever forget you?" I leaned up, kissing the bridge of his nose. "I'm not who I was before, Connor.... I don't know what or who I am now. Everything is different but the one thing that will never change is my feelings for you..." I trailed off, wiping the tears from his cheeks. "I love you, Connor. I will always love you."

Connor gave me a small smile, lifting my chin up. "I love you so much, Tasha."

Connor leaned down, capturing my lips with his own. Never before had I felt so much from a kiss. It was like he was expressing all of his emotions into the one kiss. I let out a content moan as I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer.

"None of this is your fault, Connor." I gazed into his eyes, "Don't you dare blame yourself. I'm here. I'm alive."

The relief on his face was nearly indescribable as he held me closer, slowly leaning down to kiss my neck as his hand met mine, causing what felt like a spark to flow through my body.

Then I felt it.

I felt everything he felt.

I saw everything he saw.

Everything flashed in one single moment.

I let out a gasp as I pulled away from him, looking down at our interlocked hands. Both of our skin was gone and the white plastic below remained, binding us in a way I never thought possible.

"What... What was that?" I asked with wide eyes.

"I... I don't know." Connor replied, staring down at our hands.

Before Connor could continue I heard a commotion outside. "LET ME IN THERE!"

"North, calm down—"

"Markus, I swear to God if you don't let me in there—"

With a sigh I turned away from Connor, opening the door to reveal North trying to push past Markus.

I couldn't help but smile as I watched the scene unfold in front of me.

"I'm gone for three weeks and everything's turned to chaos."

North's eyes lit up as she saw me. Markus stepped aside so she could run at me, nearly toppling me over in the process.

"Woah— okay, easy North." I shook my head, smiling as I hugged her back. "I'm okay!"

North pulled back, slapping me across the face. "You idiot!" She cried, hugging me again. "How many times do we have to tell you humans are fragile?!"

"OW!" I pushed her back as I shook my head, "Well, now we only have to worry about the human half of me, right?" I tried to joke, warning no laughs from anyone in the vicinity.

"Oh, come on! I thought that was pretty funny. Simon? C'mon, right?"

Simon just shook his head, causing me to let out a dramatic sigh.

"Alright, so let's talk about the elephant in the room — I died, and now I'm back. So... what now?"

Markus lead me to another room where I could sit down. "Your death was broadcast on live television."

"Oh my god." I turned to Connor, my eyes desperate. "Hank! Did he—"

"Hank's okay." Connor reassured me, rubbing my back. "He... he saw what happened. He hasn't left since—"

"Where is he?!" I went to stand but I had four pairs of arms pushing me back down.

"You need to take a moment to breathe, Tasha." Markus said, keeping his hands on my arms. "You've been through s lot — you can't just jump back into everything like you didn't —"

"Like I didn't die?" I rolled my eyes, "Quit being so melodramatic."

"You did die." Markus said, shaking his head. "You haven't even begun to process that—"

"No because if I do process it I'll fucking explode." I retorted, beginning to feel a little overwhelmed. "You don't get what it's like —" I cut myself off, shaking my head. I stood, pushing past everyone as I grabbed a knife, cutting a small incision down my hand.

"Tasha! What are you—"

Connor stopped mid sentence as they all stared at my hand. The blood that fell was no longer a crimson shade — nor was it the blue thyrium shade — my blood was purple, and as it fell from my body I felt more detached than I had moments before.

What am I?

Who am I?
