Chapter Fourty-Four: Together, or Never at All
Tasha's POV
I'm lucky this motorcycle runs by itself.
I held onto the handlebars tight as the automobile sped through the city. Luckily, all of the cops were worried about androids, not human girls on motorbikes.
I didn't want to leave Connor. On the contrary I would've gave anything to stay by his side. But I had this feeling in my chest that Markus needed my help — what kind of friend would I be if I ignored my gut instinct to keep myself safe?
When I was a few blocks away from the barricade, I ditched the bike to look less conspicuous and walked towards the group of Deviants in the middle of the road.
"Tasha!" Markus called out to me, running to meet me at the edge of the barricade. "Are you insane? What are you doing here?!"
"I wanted to help. Markus — Connor did it!" I explained, unable to hide my smile. "He's on his way with all the androids from CyberLife tower. If we can hold off the army until then..."
"Does Connor know you're here?"
"Um... well, that's the thing... I may have stolen a motorcycle to get here before he did... Now are you gonna help me over this thing before the cops start firing at me?" I nodded my head over to the soldiers who had their guns pointed at me. "I don't think they know I'm human."
"Dammit, Tasha." Markus reached his hand out, helping me over the barricade. "You shouldn't have come here."
"Markus is right." North shook her head in disapproval at me. "We can handle ourselves, you're—"
"I know, I know, I'm a fragile human. I get it. You can't get rid of me that easily." I wrinkled my nose in defiance as I grabbed my pistols from my holsters. "It won't be long until they start firing..."
"How long until Connor gets here?"
I froze for a moment, looking down at the ground.
"Too long." I admitted. "It's... he's too far away to help us. We have to do this ourselves."
It was in that moment the soldiers threw grenades our way.
And so it begins...
•••
"If we live through this, you're buying me a drink!" I called to Markus, almost immediately having to toss him some scrap metal to repel the bullets coming towards him. "Make that two!"
This time the soldiers lunged towards me, making me fall back a few paces. They fired their weapons at me. Markus shoved me out of the way of oncoming gunfire, causing me to roll over pieces of broken glass. My body shook slightly as I removed pieces of glass from my cheek and my arm.
"North!"
I looked over and saw North being surrounded by two soldiers. I ran over to her, punching one guard in the face while the other tried to hit me, slamming me into the ground.
"You're... Human?!" His voice sounded unsure, which gave me the opportunity to get the upper hand.
I let out a groan as I shoved the soldier off me, "Get off me!" I screamed, running behind North and the other Deviants.
We're trapped.
In a single moment the soldiers surrounded us, giving us no route for escape.
This is it.
No, this can't be.
I refuse to die here... not now!
"Hold on just a little while longer.
Hold on just a little while longer.
Hold on just a little while longer.
Everything will be alright.
Everything will be alright."
As Markus began to sing, I stood next to him, linking my hand with his and North's. I sang with him, feeling tears fall down my face, along with blood from the cut on my cheek.
"Fight on just a little while longer.
Fight on just a little while longer.
Pray on just a little while longer.
Everything will be alright.
Everything will be alright."
Some of the soldiers had their guns lowered in confusion, while others continued to point their weapons at us. My thoughts drifted to Connor.
If I die now, what will he do?
How would he react?
"Sing on just a little while longer.
Sing on just a little while longer.
Sing on just a little while longer.
Everything will be alright.
Everything will be alright..."
As we finished our song, my grip on Markus' and North's hand tightening as the soldiers continued to advance.
The soldiers stopped in their tracks for a moment, before stepping back, retreating until they were out of sight.
I looked over at Markus a moment, his expression of confusion mimicking mine. Slowly I let go of his hand, and North's, taking a step forward while looking at the sky.
"Did we... are we..." I couldn't make a coherent sentence as I tried to wrap my brain around the situation. One moment the soldiers were slaughtering us, the next they completely vanished.
"I don't know." Markus replied, his eyes washing over the entire scene before us. He closed his eyes, no doubt searching for any answers to our questions.
"We did it." North muttered, a smile appearing on her face as she turned towards what little Deviants were left. "We did it!"
The Deviants cheered and for a moment I just focussed on them — their happy and relieved faces making my heart jump for joy.
"Connor... He did it."
I looked up at Markus with wide eyes before turning around. Connor was leading the thousands of androids towards us. I could care less about anything in that moment other than seeing him again.
My legs couldn't go fast enough as I ran to him, wrapping my arms around his body as soon as I could.
"You're alright!" Connor cried, holding onto me as if his life depended on it.
"Of course I'm alright." I managed to tease, pulling back enough so I could look up at him, unable to hold back my tears and smile of relief.
Connor kissed me passionately, pulling my body tight against his. "I thought I was going to lose you. I was so scared—"
"I love you so much, Connor." I kissed the bridge of his nose before resting my head against his chest. "I'm here. I'm okay. A little worse for wear but nothing some pain killers won't fix."
"Don't you ever do that again!" He chided, running his fingers through my hair. "One minute you're with me the next your gone! Why would you—"
"I knew you wouldn't let me go, Connor. I had to help Markus. If I hadn't been there..."
After a moment I pulled away from Connor, glancing up at the sky. I noticed a helicopter flying above us, a camera pointed not at the army of androids, no, the camera was pointed at Connor and I.
"Is it just me or are they pointing that thing at us?"
Connor glanced up for a moment, analyzing the device.
"Look at that — it looks like a Human and android are kissing! Let's get a closer look."
He let out a soft chuckle. "Yes. There's a man talking about the girl who fell in love with an Android."
"Me?" I raised my eyebrows, waving at the camera before giving Connor one last kiss before turning back to Markus and North who both had small smirks on their face.
"Staaaaahp." I groaned. "I swear you two are like the siblings I never wanted."
"You love us." North smiled wrapping her arm around my neck.
"Bleh," I wrinkled my noise, feigning disgust.
I was quiet for a moment, thinking about our victory.
"Maybe just a bit."
A/N: I'm so cheesy but I love the friendship between Markus tasha and North tbh I can't wait to delve into it more. If you have any suggestions let me know! We're so close to nearing the end of the in game story, and I love you all so much. Don't worry though, we're nowhere near the end of the story.
