Chapter Fourty-Eight: Reunion
"Are you alright?"
I was silent for a moment as I stared at my body in the mirror.
"I don't feel like I'm really here. My body it... it's like it's rejecting what I am now." I shook my head, forcing a small smile as I turned to him. "I'll be alright, Connor. I was dead less than a day ago... it's going to take time."
Connor wrapped his arm around my waist, "And I'll be with you every step of the way."
"Tasha?"
I felt tears come to my eyes as I looked past Connor, "Hi Hank."
Connor moved out of the way as Hank ran to me, pulling me tight to him. "Is that really you, kiddo?"
"It's me, Hank." I hugged him close, smiling. "I'm okay."
"Are... are you..."
"Still human?" I asked, smiling slightly. "Yep... give or take a few Android parts, but for the most part I'm still human me..."
I just bleed purple. Because science!
Hank shook his head in disbelief. "I could care less whether you were human, Android — hell you could be a fucking fairy for all I care — I'm just glad you're here, that you're okay." Hank hugged me again. "I thought I lost you, kiddo."
I sniffled, "Hank... You know I love you right? We joke around all the time but... you're my dad. I want you to know that."
Hank held me tighter, letting out a chuckle. "I love you too, kid. You're the daughter I never wanted."
"I take offence to that." I teased, unable to stop smiling up at him.
Connor was standing silently, a smile on his face as he watched us.
"You done standing there like a creep, Connor?" Hank looked over at his partner, eyebrows raised.
"I was merely observing —"
"Creeping." Hank interrupted, sitting back in his chair. "Anyways, What now? You said you're part android... how does that work exactly?"
I shrugged my shoulders, "Thyrium is pumped through my body along with my human blood, which keeps my heart beating."
"Essentially, Tasha's heart works the same as an Android's heart does." Connor said, "From what we can tell, her body has been accepting the enhancements Kamski made. Your right arm had to be... enhanced due to blood loss."
"That explains the freaky skin disappearing act that happened earlier." I looked between my human hand and my synthetic hand, observing them closely. They looked identical on the outside — but they felt different. My right hand felt like it wasn't really there.
How bizarre.
"Any other enhancements I should know about?" Hank had his eyebrows raised as he looked over at Connor.
"You're entire system runs on thyrium now. Theoretically speaking your life expectancy is that of an androids now. Your entire system functions because of the thyrium running through your veins and major organs. Without it, you— you'd shut down."
"Androids can live indefinitely." I said quietly, looking over at Connor with raised eyebrows. "Does that mean that I—"
"Will live as long as me?" Connor had a small smile on his face. "We believe that will be the case."
"Well, that's one less problem on my mind." I hummed softly as I turned back to Hank.
"What's been going on at the station? What have I missed?"
"Everyone's just been trying to get used to androids being our equals. It... hasn't sat well with some of our colleagues."
"Gavin." I said with an eye roll, "Not very surprised by that. What does everyone know about what happened to me?"
"They all saw what I did — we watched you die. Now I'm all for the equality of androids but you — you're something different and that can put you in harms way, kid."
"I agree with Hank." Connor said as he sat down next to me. "We need to be cautious. There's no doubt that CyberLife is biding their time until they can make a move — it's not safe to think that exposing what you are wouldn't put you in danger."
"What am I supposed to tell people? That I miraculously survived?"
"Yes." Connor replied, "You had the best doctors in the world working to save you and they did just that."
"Fine." I sighed, "But what happens now? We just... go about life as it was before? Is that even possible?"
"All I know is that you're alive, kid. And to me that's all that matters." Hank ruffled my hair.
Yeah, I'm alive...
I stared down at my hands, trying my best to clear my mind of the negative thoughts that wanted to work their way through my brain.
Go away!
Leave me alone!
I jumped slightly when I felt Connor grab my arm. He looked at me with concerned eyes. It was then I noticed that my entire body was shaking and that blue thyrium has begun to leak from the side of my mouth.
"I..." My voice faded as I was unable to think of a coherent sentence.
"Come on. We need to check on this." Connor said, running his fingers along my lip to catch the thyrium that leaked before bringing it up to his mouth.
"Ew! Connor, what have we talked about doing that shit?!"
"I'm sorry, Hank, but it's the fastest method of finding the cause and solution." Connor replied, analyzing the sample.
"Your stress levels were elevated, along with your heart rate — all of this leads me to believe your body is reacting not only to the enhancements but to your own thoughts on it."
I remained silent as I wiped the remainder of the thyrium off my face.
Hank shook his head. "In English please, Connor."
I sighed, "He's saying that my brain isn't able handling the enhancements, and if my stress levels get too high there's a chance I'd self destruct."
"Okay, What can we do about that?"
Connor opened his mouth to speak, but I cut him off. "Nothing. All we can do is try to keep my stress levels down."
"How the hell do we do that? You're a fucking stress magnet."
"Thanks, Hank." I retorted with an eye roll. "I can think of ways to lower my stress level—"
"You're disgusting, kid." Hank groaned, shaking his head as he stood up. "I'm gonna go get some coffee before I puke."
"I don't understand." Connor said, his brows creasing in confusion.
"I'll tell you when you're older." Hank rolled his eyes as he left the room, leaving Connor and I alone.
As I stood up, Connor rushed to my side, causing me to giggle. "Connor, relax, ok? You don't have to rush to my side every time I stand up."
"I saw you die." His voice was quiet as he spoke, his eyes focused on the floor. "I... I killed you."
"None of that was your fault, Connor."
"You deserve a normal life. A human life."
"Im still human. I'm just... more than that now. Do you not realize that this means we can be together forever? Not even death can separate us now, Connor."
"If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't have to go through all this —"
"Stop blaming yourself! It was my decision. I could've stopped you, I could've done something but instead I took the shot because I didn't want anyone else getting hurt. None of this is your fault, okay? Everything will work out..."
Though I said the words, the uncertainty was clear on my face.
"I have to keep you safe." Connor kissed the top of my head as he wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me into a tight embrace.
"I won't lose you again. I promise, I won't let anything happen to you."
