Chapter Fifty-Four: When Will My Life Begin

He knows?!

I stood silently as I waited for the captain to continue. I could feel my stress levels elevating but I tried to keep my composure, digging my nails into my palm.

Captain Fowler looked at me with a curious expression. "I am aware of your... situation, and I want you to know that in no way does what happened to you make me see you any differently as an employee. You're one of the best we have."

My heart dropped at the acknowledgment of my secret.

Great.

"How are you adjusting to everything?"

Though I was upset that the Captain knew about my... condition, I was glad that it didn't pose a threat to my position of work.

"T-thank you, sir."

"While you've been gone, there's been a spike in riots against the androids — mainly from the rich and those who were taking advantage of said androids. Some are still in hiding with their captive androids..."

While the Captain continued catching me up, I felt myself unable to concentrate as my mind played through all the possibilities of the day going wrong.

Great.

Connor's POV

"Do you think she's doing alright?"

Connor's eyes were locked on the door of the Captain's office, waiting impatiently for Tasha to emerge.

"Tasha's the toughest kid I know — I'm sure she's fine, Connor."

"Yes, but she hasn't been... adapting well to her enhancements." Connor's voice was quiet as he glanced over at Hank.

"Well what do you expect? She's part android for fuck sakes." Hank replied in a hushed whisper.

"I am aware that she is part android, Hank. My concern is that she shouldn't be here. The possibilities of her stress levels rising are —"

"They would be a hell of a lot higher if you kept her away from her job." Hank rolled his eyes, "Something she loves. She wants things to go back to normal, Connor. You can't keep her away from this forever."

"But they're not normal." Connor replied, finding himself anxiously flipping his coin across his fingers. "Tasha... she needs to accept that things are different and she has to embrace that."

Hank sighed, setting his coffee cup down as he turned in his seat to look at Connor. "Look, I know you're worried about her. But Tasha? She's stubborn and she'll only figure out what she has to do when she needs to — nothing you, or I say will change that."

Connor opened his mouth to reply, but closed it as he heard the Captain's door open. Immediately he was walking over to Tasha, analyzing her as he smiled up at her. "How did it go?"

Stress Level: 35%

Tasha smiled at him — it wasn't her normal smile. No, this smile was forced. "Good... it went good."

"Tasha —"

"My heads hurting," Tasha put her hand on his shoulder as she walked down the steps. "I'm gonna go splash some water on my face, okay? I'll be back right away."

Connor was hesitant as he stared at her, his eyes narrowed as he continued to analyze her, his LED yellow. He let out a sigh, stepping aside, allowing her to pass him as he walked back to Hank's desk.

Tasha's POV

I could drown myself in water and it still wouldn't be enough to calm me.

I splashed the cold water on my face, grabbing onto the edge of the sink to keep myself up.

How am I supposed to do this? Pretend everything's normal when it isn't...

I shook my head, staring at myself in the mirror.

What am I?

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath before putting on the closest thing to a normal smile that I could.

I'm Tasha Price. The best fucking detective here.

Nothing's changed.

As I turned the corner to leave the bathrooms I let out a squeal, putting my hand to my chest to try to calm my racing heart beat.

"Jesus! Gavin, w-what the fuck are you doing here?! You scared me..."

Gavin merely smiled, "Oh, you know... just roaming and observing the sights of the office..." He placed his hand on the wall next to my head, as his eyes roamed along my body, causing me to roll my eyes in annoyance.

"Leave me alone, Gavin. I won't ask again."

Don't do anything. Gavin's just being an asshole, like usual.

Gavin said nothing as he brought his other hand to touch my waist, causing me to flare up at him, anger swelling in my chest.

Don't.
Do.
Anything.

My insides were screaming at me to push him away, but I kept my composure. "I said leave me alone, Gavin."

"Ooh, feisty." Gavin smirked as he leaned down, "I recall that used to be a charistic of the old you."

My whole body froze as I stared up at him, "W-what?"

His smirk widened, "That's right. I know about your... enhancements." He trailed his finger up my arm, causing me to shudder. "You know, if I wouldn't have known I would've thought you went on a diet or something. But this? Now it all makes sense. Seeing as there's the whole new outlook on androids to humans."

Do I call for Connor?

Or do I stand up for myself?

My mind was racing with dozens of possibilities as Gavin continued to move his hand up to my neck.

I feel my body begin to shake as I try to fight the urge to hurt Gavin. My hands balled into fists at my side.

Do.

Nothing!

But as I screamed the words in my head, my body reacted against them.

I reached my synthetic hand up, grabbing onto his neck and shoving him hard against the wall.

I will not be some damsel in distress.

I glared at Gavin as I pushed his neck harder against the wall, unable to stop the smirk that came to my face as I saw that fearful look in his eyes.

"What, nothing to say now, tough guy?"
