Chapter Eighty-One: Staring
Gavin was sitting at his desk which was connected to Tasha's, and she couldn't help but observe him. He didn't look well, to say the least. His skin was unnaturally pale and he looked like he hadn't slept in days.
I wonder what happened to him?
Tasha blushed when Gavin caught her gaze, immediately averting her eyes to her keyboard. She hadn't meant to stare, but she had never seen him look so... unkept.
She didn't miss his chuckle though. "What're you staring at me for, princess?"
Tasha's blush faded as she typed random stuff onto her computer. "I wasn't staring. I was observing."
"You're starting to sound like your tin can over there."
Tasha sighed, her gaze meeting Gavin's. "Can you please not call him that? He's as much of a human as you are — hell, he probably is more of a human than you, Gavin."
Gavin smirked slightly, "Aw, you're standing up for him. How cute." He leaned on his elbow as he took in her appearance.
Her brown hair was longer, past her shoulders now. Her skin paler than it used to be, but only by the slightest bit. Her eyes, where they were once void of anything held so many emotions that Gavin couldn't even begin to describe.
Gavin was brought out of his thoughts when Tasha snapped his fingers in front of his face. "Earth to Gavin!" She let out a small giggle as she saw the red tint appear on his cheeks. "Now who's staring?"
Gavin rolled his eyes before turning back to his computer. "You better go check in with your boyfriend. I don't think he likes you talking to me." Gavin had a smirk on his face as Tasha turned to look towards Connor, who was indeed watching them, and clearly listening intently to their conversation.
Tasha waved him over, causing Gavin to groan in annoyance. "I'm going to get coffee!" Before he walked away, he turned to Tasha causing her to raise her eyebrows at him.
"Do you want anything?"
Tasha couldn't help but let the smile come to her face as she thought on his offer. "Hmm, can you get me water? Ooh! And a donut."
"Water and a donut, coming right up." Gavin gave her a smile, a genuine smile that he rarely gave anyone, before he turned towards the break room.
By the time Gavin left, Connor had finished his paper work and wheeled over to Tasha's side.
"Don't be jealous." Tasha teased, resting her hand on his chest soothingly. "It's my first day back and Gavin isn't being a total dick."
"I'd rather him be a dick than have you want his affection." Connor replied honestly, looking at her with a perplexed expression.
"Connor," Tasha glanced around, making sure the Captain was still in his office before placing a gentle kiss on his lips. "I love you. Nothing is going to change that. I've known Gavin a long time, and we used to be friends, and as much of a dick as he can be, I don't want to lose him. I don't think I can handle losing anyone at this point."
Connor smiled slightly, "I love you. I will... try my best not to become jealous. Though I make no promises. The way he looks at you is... unsettling."
"You think everything about Gavin is unsettling. Speak of the devil." Tasha nodded her head towards Gavin who was walking back with her water and donut.
Connor sighed, wheeling back to his desk to let Tasha finish her work.
Gavin walked over to Tasha's desk, setting the water cup down and handing her a sprinkle covered donut.
My favorite.
Tasha couldn't hide the grin as she took it from him, "Thank you, Gavin."
He didn't say anything for a moment as he watched her, though he enjoyed tormenting her, seeing her happy because of his actions made him feel strange — in a good way.
"I know they're you're favorite." Gavin mumbled before he sat down at his desk.
Tasha smiled as she ate the donut, "You're right! I love sprinkles."
There was silence between the two after that, but Gavin kept glancing at her. He didn't want to admit it, but he had missed her presence, and he had been worried about her. He shouldn't have taken advantage of her when she didn't have her emotions, he knew that, but he wanted to have her for so long, that he didn't resist his urges. Gavin shook his head. Stop thinking about her. She doesn't mean anything to me. He tried to lie to himself, repeating the thoughts over and over again, but when he looked over at her again he couldn't help but to notice how she bit her lip when she was concentrating, or how she'd twirl her hair on her pencil. How she'd gaze over towards Connor, and he'd gaze back at her, both smiling. Gavin envied Connor. He'd give anything to have Tasha look at him like she does him.
Gavin sighed in frustration as his phone rang, leaving the office not noticing Tasha was looking at him.
Tasha went to fill up her cup of water she had finished, but stopped when she heard Gavin's voice around the corner. She couldn't make out what the person on the other line was saying, but Gavin sounded upset.
Tasha was hesistant as she walked around the corner, Gavin's back to her. He shoved his phone into his pocket.
"Are you okay?"
Gavin didn't seem too surprised to hear her. He nodded. "I'm fine."
"Gavin." Tasha's voice was soft as she stepped over to him. "C'mon, you can show that asshole persona to everyone else, but I can see right through it."
Gavin shrugged, but looked at her. She smiled up at him, creating a warm feeling in his stomach that he hated she could give him. He knew he blew any chance he had with her, and he saw how happy Connor made her. It angered him, seeing the way she looked at Connor. But he couldn't help but feel somewhat happy for her that she was finally able to have something good happen in her life.
"You can talk to me, Gavin."
"What's there to talk about?" Gavin leaned his back against the wall. "All I've done in life is disappoint my family."
"I highly doubt that," Tasha leaned against the wall next to him. "As much as I hate to admit it, you're one of the best detectives here. You sure don't let any of us forget it." Tasha teased lightly.
The corner of Gavin's lips twitched upward slightly. "The only thing I'm good at is pushing people away."
Tasha didn't fight him on that. "Have you ever thought about letting people in? You have people here who care about you."
Gavin simply scoffed in response, causing Tasha to bit her lip absentmindedly.
"I care about you."
Gavin glanced over at her. Damn those green eyes of hers. "Why would you care about me? After how I've treated you..."
Tasha looked away from him, "Because I know there's good in you, Gavin. You might not see it, but I do. Ever since I've come back you've been... different."
"You shouldn't care about me, Tasha. I can't change."
Tasha turned to look at him again, grabbing onto his arm which caused him to look at her. "You can change. I did. I'm a lot more messed up than you are." Slowly she let go of his arm, a small smile on her face. "It's all up to you, Gavin. But I'm here for you."
As Tasha walked away, Gavin watched her thoughtfully. He wasn't sure if he was capable of loving anyone, but he knew that his feelings for her were probably as close as he'd ever get. Gavin decided to try to take Tasha's advice and change for the better. Guess I'll start with the tin can... Connor. He corrected himself, walking back to the office noticing Tasha sitting at her desk.
Gavin walked past Connor's desk, "Good job on the case today, Connor."
Connor looked up, his eyebrows raised as he watched Gavin walk to his desk. "Thank you."
Tasha looked over at Gavin, smirking slightly.
"Oh shut up."
Tasha didn't say anything, but she found herself smiling at the idea of Gavin treating Connor with respect.
Maybe things can be different after all.
