Chapter 137: Misshaps and Missteps
Some months had passed since Tasha and Connor told Hank about the pregnancy, and as her due date slowly drew nearer, Tasha was moved to desk duty only, and though she knew it was for the best, she hated having to sit all day while Connor and Hank got to go on missions.
Luckily for her, she didn't mind doing paperwork or studying and interrogations so she adapted quite quickly. She was usually stuck fixing Gavin's paperwork, but he'd bring her an iced tea or her favourite donuts whenever she had to.
"I kind of feel like you're trying to fatten me up." She chuckled as she bit into the delicious treat.
"Cute. I think you'd mail me if I didn't bring you your daily dose of sugar and caffeine."
"Good point."

Tasha had the brilliant idea of having Hank and Connor work on baby shower ideas while she worked late. She was certain they wouldn't get work done but the flustered expressions they showed when she told them was more than enough reason in her mind.
On her way home, Tasha's cell phone began buzzing annoyingly. She sighed as she put the phone to her ear. "What is it, Connor?"
"You — you're really fucking hot, yknow?"
A face palm followed by a sigh. "Connor, where's Hank? Shouldn't you be doing something other than drinking?"
Connor coughed, "Well, I wasn't going to have any — but I wanted to try the drinks you like annnnnd I can see why you enjoy them! They are... how do you put it? Rad."
"Riiiiight." Tasha facepalmed, shaking her head with a small smile. "While you being tipsy is definitely interesting, you're supposed to be planning the baby shower."
"I don't know why you left that to us! We know nothin' about babies!" Hank slurred in the background.
"Because I wanted to see what you'd come up with and I'd go from there!" Tasha sighed as she stepped into the crosswalk. "Plus, it's not like I care. Everyone else is making a big deal about it or I'd just wait until I had the baby."
It didn't take Connor long to sober up, since the alcohol ran through his body faster than a humans.
"Tasha, when will you be back?"
"I'm a few blocks away." She checked her digital watch with a smile. "I should be—"
** CRASH **
All Connor could hear was tired skidding on the road, a loud thump, and then static.
"Tasha?"

Connor arrived to Tasha's last known location quicker than the paramedics. He scanned the area and found Tasha lying unconscious on the ground, glass everywhere around her. She had been hit by a car, and was thrown into a window which shattered.
Connor immediately ran to her side, quickly analyzing her wounds as he felt his entire body shake uncontrollably. "Tasha?" His voice was soft as he tried to wake her. "Darling? Please get up. You have to get up."
Tasha stirred slightly but blood continued to pool around her body. The mix of thyrium and her human blood was sleeping through her clothes, a gash on her head caused the blood to further trail down her body. Connor was frantic as the ambulance arrived. He picked her up, carrying her to them with doing as little damage as possible to her.
Connor was on auto-pilot. He had no idea what to do, or how to help her. The ambulance androids immediately put pressure on her wounds, but as they began to put pressure on her stomach he gained his senses for a moment.
"She— she's pregnant!"
The androids looked at him oddly for a moment before readjusting their treatment of her wounds. "She's losing a lot of blood. You're the father, I presume?"
"Yes." Connor's voice was shaky, he kept his sight on his wife who was still unconscious, but breathing steadily now that they had applied ample pressure to her wounds.
"We may need you to donate blood if her or the baby needs it."
Connor nodded, trying his best not to calculate the percentage rates of how likely she was to survive this. He knew Tasha was a fighter, she had been through so much that he knew she could handle a lot — but what worried him more was the fact that their baby's vitals were unknown to him because his systems couldn't differentiate between the two properly.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital Tasha was wheeled into a surgery room. The doctor came out as she was being prepped, a human doctor, accompanied by an Android.
"Is... is she alright?" Connor asked, desperately ignoring his impulse to check her stats himself, knowing it would only upset him further.
"Your wife has lost a lot of blood. The impact of the car hitting her has caused some internal bleeding, but she was lucky. Had she been fully human, I hate to say but she wouldn't have survived the impact."
Connor nodded, staring at her pale face through the glass. "Will... will she be okay?"
"Luckily, her android parts seemed to take the brunt force of the impact." The android replied quietly. "As long as we can get the internal bleeding under control, she should pull through."
"And... our baby? Will— will it—"
Both the doctor and assistant's expressions dropped, and Connor knew that the outcome would likely end in tragedy.
"Until we are able to stop the internal bleeding we won't know if there were any complications with the baby. Your wife used her android arm to block her uterus from the impact. We can't get clear vital signs due to her vitals overpowering our sensors."
"We promise you, we will do everything in our power to help them both."
Connor nodded silently, watching as they walked into the surgery room. He was anxious, fidgeting with his coin. It had been a while since he had done so, but it was the only thing distracting his mind from coming up with conclusions for the situation before it happened. He knew that the likelihood their baby would survive was low, but he tried to keep his spirits up, knowing Tasha would need him when she was safe.
•••
Hank sat anxiously outside of the surgery department. Connor explained what little he could without breaking to Hank, while the doctors explained the rest. Connor stayed outside of the surgery room to keep an eye on things but Hank needed time to process what was happening. His little girl was once again fighting for her life, for something as trivial as a car hitting her. Fucking bastards. Hank thought bitterly as his leg jittered. He knew she didn't deserve any of the bullshit life threw at her. Just when things seemed to be going normal and good, a life or death crisis had to happen.
Hank knew how strong Tasha was, same as Connor, so for the most part he knew she would pull through — but there was always the chance something would go wrong. Always a chance someone would fuck it up, just like...
"Shit, is she okay?"
Hank was brought out of his damning thoughts by Gavin turning the corner, quickly walking over to where he sat.
"They took her into surgery an hour ago. It should be done soon." He replied, taking a long sip of coffee.
"Fuck." Gavin paced, anger boiling in his veins.
"Chris said you were at the scene just after the ambulance got there."
Gavin nodded. "Yeah, shit, the car was pretty busted from hitting her android parts. Did they say if she broke anything?"
Hank shook his head. "At best her android parts might need to be resynched from the trauma but they don't think she broke anything, just a shit ton of bruising."
"What caused all the bleeding?" Gavin asked, rubbing his jaw as he tried to forget how cold he felt when the saw the purple blood on the ground at the crime scene.
"No clue. Doc said her back and side were cut pretty bad, but it was the internal bleeding that worried them."
"And..." Gavin hesitated as he glanced at the door. "The baby?"
Hank frowned, sighing deeply. "It's not looking good."
"Shit..." Gavin shook his head. "She's gonna be heartbroken if anything happens to that baby."
"All we can do is let the doctors do their job and find the bastard who did this."
"That's the weird thing. I took a look at the scene of the accident, and... it was strange." Gavin crossed his arms as he leant against the wall, looking at Hank who was sitting.
"What are you talking about? Strange how?"
"The strange thing was there was no one else at the scene of the accident. Paramedics checked in the vehicle of the car that hit her, and there wasn't any sign of a person being involved."
"So you're saying someone did this to her?" Hank asked as he rubbed his forehead.
"It's the only option that makes sense." Gavin moved, sitting across from Hank. "Chris was still there when I left, and everyone else is scoping out the area, if there is something deeper to all this we'll figure it out."
They weren't silent for a few minutes, both waiting impatiently for news. They both jumped out of their seats when the doctor can through the double doors.
"Is she—"
"Tasha is doing just fine. We stopped the internal bleeding." The doctor reassured them with a small smile. "Connor is with her right now, they've wheeled her up to recovery if you'd like to follow me there."
"Wait, what about the baby?"

Faint beeping was the first thing Tasha heard as the darkness that clouded her became lighter. While she felt a weight lift from her, she felt agony fill her body at every slight stir she made. The beeping became louder as her eyes began to flutter, bright lights causing her to squint. "Con—nor?"
She felt a soft hand holding her own, a soft brush of lips against her temple. "I'm here, my love. Just relax. Don't move too quickly."
Tasha hummed in response, squeezing his hand ever so slightly. Her eyes slowly adjusted to the bright lights, and her gaze met beautiful brown orbs. A small smile came to her face as she sleepily remarked, "You're beautiful."
Connor smiled softly, "If anyone is beautiful here it is you."
"What... happened? I remember talking to you, and then..."
Connor's smile faltered slightly. "You... you were hit by a car, my love."
Tasha's eyes widened, "Oh, is that all?" The pain meds were making her slightly out of it, she almost laughed until her vacant hand rushed to her belly. "The baby— is it—"
Connor grabbed her face, leaning his forehead against her own. "Our baby is perfectly healthy."
The flesh of his hand retreated into a stark white as he showed her the babies vital signs, proving that she was indeed safe.
"Con, how long was I out?"
Connor pressed his lips to her forehead. "Just under a week. They had to re-sync your android parts and that took some finessing. Gavin and Chris have been working the case while Hank and I have been here."
"Where is Hank?" She asked sleepily, leaning her head back against the pillow, calming slightly now that she knew her baby was okay.
"I believe he and Reed went to get some coffee. I don't believe I've ever seen them get along this well. It is quite disturbing."
Tasha managed to roll her eyes at her husband's teasing manner. "I hope you've been nice."
"When am I not?" Connor smiled at her, but his eyes held fear still.
"Hey," Tasha grabbed his hand, holding it to her heart. "I'm here, okay? We both are." Pulling his other hand to her abdomen.
"We're not going anywhere, Connor."
