Chapter 123: Unexpected Surprises
Tasha was sitting on a bench, staring into the sunset. Connor sat down next to her, wrapping his arm around her waist. "What are you thinking about?"
"You." She answered, smiling up at him. "Us. Our future together."
Connor leaned down, pressing his lips to hers. "I love you."
Tasha smiled, "I love you too."
Their little infinity was cut short as the sound of a child screaming and laughing came closer and closer to them.
The girl had long, curly, brown hair, the most beautiful eyes Tasha had ever seen — a mix of green and brown surrounding her iris'. As the girl got closer, she beamed at the couple.
"Mommy! Daddy!"
•••
Tasha woke with a start, her breathing heavy as she tried to wrap her mind around the dream she just had. It felt so real. The girl had her eyes — and Connor's eyes. A mixture of their green and brown throughout them. Tasha took a deep breath. It had to be a dream right? It can't be real... but the longer she sat there, the more she felt something inside of her light up at the feeling the vision gave her.
No. That's all it was. A dream. A figment of my imagination.
Tasha laid back down, squeezing her eyes shut but the longer she laid there the more antsy she became. Part of her wanted to wake Connor up to talk to him about her vision, but she knew it would only worry him so instead she let him sleep, and decided to prove it was just a dream.
Tasha went to the corner store, buying a 3 pack pregnancy test to be thorough. It was just a stupid dream. Connor is an Android! But even as these thoughts screamed through her head, she couldn't help but have the smallest sprout of hope in her chest as she took the test.
Tasha's heart thumped rapidly as she waited for the test to change. Slowly, a plus sign came up, causing her to toss it into the garbage immediately and try again, only to find each time the tests came back positive.
Okay... it's just a fluke, right?
Tasha had no more time to take tests though, as Connor was done his updates and had already woken to get ready for work.
Just stay calm. It's probably nothing.
"Tasha?"
As Connor called for her she fell out of the bathroom, tripping on her own feet.
What a great start to the day.
••
Never in a million years did I think this could happen.
Even as a human, the idea of having children was something I always wanted — but once Connor and I got together I knew there was no possibility of us having our own. While at times the thought hurt, I knew there were other ways of having children and if we decided to, we could utilize the other methods.
There were rare times I had even mentioned the possibility of children. Maybe in passing, or in a joke to Hank, but never in a serious matter.
Connor always thinks he's holding me back, and that I'm settling for him when I could have more. But what could be more than spending my life with the man I'm in love with?
Adopting children would be hard, the qualifications are high standard, and Connor being an Android there weren't any specific laws yet to dictate how to go about it.
So when I woke up that day feeling... off, the idea that I could be pregnant wedged it's way into my brain. The child I had seen in my dreams looked so much like Connor and I... it was... haunting, to say the least.
There is no way I'm pregnant. I can't be. I'm a fucking hybrid and Connor is an Android — it makes no logical sense...
Right?
Though I tried to push the thought aside as I arrived at work, I couldn't help but ponder the scenario as I stared at the computer.
All three tests came back positive.
Maybe the brand is defective?
Connor and I were intimate most days... and we never used protection because there was no reason to...
Then why do I have this strange feeling in my abdomen?
As the first and only hybrid, my body was still for the most part human. My reproductive organs were fully functional (much to my annoyance when that time of the month came) but everything was circulated with thyrium and my own human blood. While I had become used to it, sometimes my body would still feel foreign to me.
"Are you alright, Tasha?"
My eyes snapped up to meet Connor's, who was looking at me with a concerned expression on his face. His LED was yellow, and he was clearly trying to analyze me.
"Me? Oh, yeah, I'm fine." I lied, turning back to the screen in front of me.
"Your heart rate is slightly elevated and your perspiring." Connor stated factually, his yellow LED rapidly whirring as he continued to analyze me. "Perhaps your coming down with the flu. I can tell the Captain and —"
"Darling, I'm sure it's just my period or something. I'll be fine."
Connor closed his eyes for a moment.
"Your monthly cycle was due weeks ago. Is that normal?"
My eyes widened slightly, nodding my head. "Uh, yeah! Yeah, it's... sometimes it's irregular. Oh look! I gotta go talk to Hank!"
•••
Connor watched with raised brows as Tasha hurried off towards Hank. That was... strange.
Connor had researched monthly cycles and the causes of late periods, and the main answer was pregnancy.
Well, that isn't possible.
Connor next went to an article that talked about Ovarian Cysts.
Perhaps, but seems unlikely from her body readings.
All other options were also unlikely, and the only one with symptoms closely matching those of Tasha's was pregnancy.
Connor decided to research pregnancy. The idea had crossed his mind a few times while they had been together, but he knew he could never have children of his own with Tasha. The thought bothered him in the slightest way, but he knew that if she wanted children, they'd find other ways.
Connor had noticed Tasha had gained the tiniest bit of weight, another symptom of pregnancy.
Connor was brought out of his thoughts by Tasha snapping in front of his face.
"Connor! Hey, you still in there?"
Connor blinked a few times before smiling at her. "I was just researching."
"Okay, well I got to go see Kamski. He wants to run some tests on the enhancements." Tasha said softly, smiling.
"I don't like you being around him." Connor said honestly.
"Me either but he did save my life."
•••
Tasha fidgeted with the sleeves of her shirt as she saw Kamski approach her.
"Tasha, always a pleasure to see you.l
"Likewise." Tasha smiled in response.
"What brings you here? You aren't scheduled for another appointment until next month." The man smiled.
"I— I need your help."
"Of course. What can I do for you today?"
"It's crazy, but... I need you to do an ultrasound. Just to make sure everything is okay."
Kamski looked at her skeptically, but made no argument before leading her into a secluded room with dozens of machines throughout it.
Tasha's body shook slightly as a medical android spread a hot liquid over her abdomen, Kamski's eyes focussing on the screen next to her which was facing away.
"Everything seems fine." He said evenly, not bothering to glance at her.
Tasha noticed Kamski's eyes stopped on something, telling the android to move the probe back further. As they did this, something flashed in Kamski's eyes.
"What is it?"
This is insane! There's no fucking way I'm —
"Congratulations, Miss Price."
Tasha's eyes widened as the screen was turned towards her. On her ovary a small dot could be seen.
"I... I'm pregnant?!"
