Chapter 55: Unrequited Love

JEREMY MARTINEZ'S POV

We sat in the wide living room of the Maongco's. Janissa Maongco, Math's friend, is so hospitable as well as her family. They provided us clothes for the wedding. I found myself funny in such outfit. Suot namin ni Gray ang makukulay na slacks at damit na hanggang tuhod at mataas ang manggas, topped with a funny cap. Kahit si Math at Bestie ay balot na balot din sa kanilang kasuotan. They even wore a shawl over their faces and I had this feeling that we were Hindu actors and actressess of a Bollywood film.

Speaking of them, they're sitting on the long sofa in the living room with us. May isang baso ng tubig sa harap namin. On the side is a three tier plate with rice and sliced boiled eggs on top of the rice per layer. I frowned when it occured to me na iyon ang pagkain para sa reception. Rice and boiled eggs? Please no. Katunayan ay kanina pa kami nakaupo dito. The videographer was filming Janissa for the whole time and the other guests were outside. May naririnig din akong ingay na para bang may lalaking nagsasalita na hindi ko naman maintindihan. I sat uncomfortably at nilingon ang mga nasa sofa. On one side is Gray busy chatting with Isabel, not minding the deadly glares that Amber is throwing them. Isabel did the talking while Gray listened to her.

I nudged Amber with my elbow. "Bestie, sinong Isabel ang pinirito?"

She turned her glare at me kaya itinaas ko ang dalawang kamay for surrender.

"Sabi ko nga si Isabel Oily eh. Hehehehehe." Her glare doubled kaya ibinaling ko na lang sa kabilang dako ang atensyon ko. Sa kabilang side naman ay sina Janissa at Math, talking about the old times.

Tumayo ako at lumapit sa bride "Janissa, hindi pa ba magsisimula ang kasal?", tanong ko sa kanya. We've been sitting here for hours.

She smiled at me. "Kanina pa nagsisimula Jeremy."

"Ha? Kanina pa? Eh bakit nandito ka pa?" Niloloko ba niya ako?

"Farhan and Ama are inside para sa kasal", she said and pointed the door kung saan naririnig ko ang ingay.

"What? Si Farhan at yung papa mo ang kinakasal? My God!"

Math and Janissa burst into laughter. "It's not like that Jeremy. Lalabas din sila maya-maya and we'll head immediately to the hotel for the reception."

Hindi naman nagtagal ay lumabas na nga ang pinsan ni Isabel na si Farhan kasama ang Ama ni Janissa. Farhan got the glass of water, drink half of it and passed the other half to Janissa. She drank the water too and then everyone is congratulating them. Ganoon lang ba iyon? Oh, I guess I won't share any glass with anyone from now on.

We rode in the car at nagpunta sa reception. It was a huge hall at puno iyon ng tao. I guess the Maongco and the Milano have lots of friends. The talk in the reception took three hours and we have to congratulate ourselves for staying alive the whole time kahit wala kaming maintindihan sa sinabi nila. They were talking in a language na hindi namin maintindihan, except for Math who keeps on laughing with the other visitors.

Kasalukuyang sini-serve ang pagkain nang may napulot si Math."Hey, kaninong pitaka to?", she asked and opened the wallet and I was too late to realize that it was mine. Nabuksan na niya iyon at kinuha ang mga lumang larawan at ID na nakatago doon.

"Calvin Jeremy Martinez", Math read loudly the name on my nursery identification card. Amber pulled it at tiningnan din iyon. It's kinda embarrassing dahil nakahati pa sa gitna ang buhok ko sa picture na iyon. Photoshop is not yet popular during that time and the photographer didn't give any signal na kukuha na siya ng litrato. My eyes were swollen that time dahil naghilahan pa kami ng yaya ko dahil ayaw kong magpakuha ng litrato.

"Calvin? We've been classmate for years Je pero ngayon ko lang nalaman na may Calvin pala ang pangalan mo", Amber said as she handed me the ID.

"I decided not to use my first name", sagot ko. Ayaw ko sanang pag-usapan iyon but these three are so persistent in asking me about it.

"Hindi ka ba magkakaproblema niyan sa pertinent papers mo?", Gray asked and I shook my shoulders.

"I put Calvin on them except on my school records", sagot ko.

"Magkakaproblema ka niyan. I had a friend way back in elementary. His name is Jermel at nang graduation na namin nalaman na Fernando Jr. pala ang pangalan niya", Math said.

"Ako din. A friend of mine's name is Troy and then we just found out that his name is really Abbygail. Hindi niya ginagamit ang pangalang iyon dahil pambabae daw", wika naman ni Gray.

"Bahala na yang mga kaibigan ninyo, I didn't change my name. I just eliminated the first one", wika ko.

My mood has changed when we started talking about my name. There's a reason why I eliminated the Calvin in my name. A reason that I don't want to remember.The waiter served the dishes and I sat and stare blankly on the steak on my plate. Nananadya ba ang tadhana? I was so hungry but seeing the steak made me lost my appetite. The name, the steak - Ah! I took a big sigh as the memories of the past started to flow in my mind.

[third person's POV]

"I.don't.want.to.eat!"

Iyon ang paulit-ulit na sigaw ng pitong taong gulang na batang si Calvin Jeremy Martinez. He pushed away the steak that was placed in front of him. His mother Jenny started to lose her patience over the kid. Nasa simbahan pa lamang sila ay nagta-tantrums na ito. It was the wedding of her friend, Liza. Her daughter Easter was a flower girl at ring bearer naman si Jeremy o Calvin. But because his friend Juri wasn't able to attend the wedding as a flower girl, Jeremy started to throw tantrums at the church and refused to be the ring bearer on the last minute.

"Jeremy, wag matigas ang ulo", wika ni Jenny sa anak. They were on the table at walang ibang bata doon dahil pinapaalis nito ang ibang nakaupo.

"AYAW KO PO SABI EH!", the kid screamed and pushed the plate away.

Lumapit ang kaibigan niyang si Liza sa kanila."Jen pabayaan mo na lang muna siguro yang anak mo", she said to her friend.

"I'm sorry Liz, nagkaproblema tuloy sa entourage kanina. Nagkasakit kasi ang anak ni Carmen na si Juri eh. You know they're playmates and it made him upset when she didn't make it."Ngumiti si Liza sa kaibigan.

"Kids and their puppy love. C'mon let's see our friends over there. I'm sure Jeremy will just sit and sulk here.Jenny sighed bago iniwan ang anak na nakaupo doon.

The young Jeremy looked around. Masaya ang lahat ng naroon. The other kids were playing and enjoying every moment while he just sat there, totally upset.

"Jeremy, paupo ha."He looked at the two kids who approached him. They were carrying plates with steak on it. He knows the kid who asked but he doesn't know the other kid.

"No. Bawal maupo dito", he said to the two. The other kid was Julie Ann na mas kilala bilang si Lie. They were classmates and neighbors too.

"Bakit naman hindi?"

"Because I said so." The least thing that Jeremy want was a companion but the other kid who was with Lie put her plate on the table. "Hindi mo ba ako narinig? Sabi ng hindi kayo pwede dito eh!", he said and he pushed away the plate. Mukhang napalakas iyon dahil natapon sa sahig ang plato at nabasag.

"Jeremy! What have you done! Alam mo bang gutom na gutom na si Tori!", Lie said as she tried to console the kid beside her. Nakatayo lang ito na halos hindi makapaniwala na nahulog ang plato. Her precious steak is on the hard floor.

"I DON'T CARE. Sinabi kong hindi kayo pwede dito diba?", he said and ignored the two.They left the table after Lie pulled the kid who started to tear up as she stares at the wasted food on the floor.

Ilang araw na ang lumipas matapos ang kasal. Jeremy was biking alone in their subdivision. He didn't notice the rock and he ended tripping and got his knee wounded. Umiyak siya habang nakatingin sa dumudugong sugat.

"Bata, bakit ka umiiyak?"Napatingin siya sa batang nagsalita sa harap niya. It was the kid who almost cried because of the spilled steak. What was her name? Ah, it's Tori.The girl frowned nang makita siya ngunit saglit lang iyon. Her face was worried when she saw Jeremy's wounded knee.

She grabbed the hem of her shirt and tore it. Inilagay niya iyon sa sugat ni Jeremy upang pigilan ang pagdugo ng sugat. She got her small pooh backpack at naglabas ng alcohol at Betadine doon. Girl scout? He also noticed na may iba pang mga bote ng lotion at perfume sa bag nito but he ignored it.

"Anong gagawin mo?", he asked the kid who opened the alcohol.

"Lilinisin ko ang sugat mo. Sabi ng mama ko, dapat daw lagyan ng alcohol upang mamatay ang mga germs", she said at bigla na lamang napasigaw si Jeremy nang walang sabi-sabing ibinuhos ni Tori ang alcohol sa sugat niya. His cry became louder dahil sa hapdi na dulot niyon. The next thing that Tori poured on his wound is the betadine. Pagkatapos niyon ay itinali nito ang pinunit nitong damit sa sugat ni Jeremy.

"I was bad to you and Lie but why did you help me?", Jeremy asked the girl.

"Hindi ako katulad ninyo ni Lie na nag-aaral sa private school kaya wag kang mag-ingles. Hindi ako nag-aaral kaya hindi kita maintindihan", sagot ni Tori.

"Ano ang pangalan mo?"

"Victoria."

"Akala ko Tori."

"Yan ang tawag ni Lie sa akin."

"Ah. Ilang taon kaon ka na?"

"Ten."

Jeremy was still seven at sa susunod na buwan pa siya mag-e-eight. He thought the girl was younger or of the same age like him dahil payat pa ito ngunit mas matanda pa pala ito sa kanya.

"Bakit mo ako tinulungan? Tinapon ko ang pagkain mo diba?", he asked.

"Tapos?"

"Dapat galit ka."

"Bakit naman?"

"Kasi nga tinapon ko ang pagkain mo."

"Tapos nga?"

"Wala ka ng pagkain nun."

The girl laughed as she put the alcohol and betadine back on her bag.

"Sinong may sabi? Magpapasalamat pa nga sana ako sayo eh, mas dumami ang pagkain ko dahil sa ginawa mo. Marami ang naawa sa akin dahil sa pagiging salbahe mo kaya ibinigay nila ang mga pagkain sa akin."

Jeremy frowned at the kid. "Taga dito ka rin ba sa subdivision?"

Umiling si Tori. "Taga doon ako sa labasan."

Mas lalong napakunot ang noo ni Jeremy dahil sa sinabi nito. Sa labasan ng subdivision ay slum area. Maraming mga squatter doon at lahat ng bahay ay mga barong-barong na baka ilipad kapag may malakas na hangin.

"Oh, anong ginagawa mo dito?"

"Naglaro kami ni Lie."Jeremy stared at his wristwatch. Malamang hinahanap na siya sa kanila. Dahan-dahan siyang tumayo at pinulot ang bike.

"Salamat nga pala sa pagtulong sa akin."

"Anong salamat? Hindi yan pwede, kapalit ng pagtulong ko ay maglalaro tayo sa bahay ninyo bukas."

"Bukas?"

"Oo. Bukas."

"Hindi pwede. Wala ako bukas." Pagkatapos kasi ng klase niya bukas ay pupunta siya sa bahay nina Juri at makikipaglaro dito. He had to visit her dahil lately ay may iba na itong kalaro. It was Christian who lives on the other block.

"Sa susunod na araw."

"Fine. Tapos even na tayo ha, bye." He was about to ride his bike nang pinigilan ito ni Tori. She held his wrist.

"Teka, ikaw anong pangalan mo?", she asked.

"Jeremy."

"Jeremy. Sa susunod na araw ha?"

"Oo na", wika niya at nagdrive na pabalik sa kanila. He opened the gate at pumasok doon. Eksakto namang nakasalubong niya ang mama niya.

"Jeremy saan ka galing? Bakit ang dumi-dumi mo?", Jenny asked the kid. Napansin niya ang tela sa tuhod nito ma may bahid ng dugo. "What happened to your knee?"

"Nahulog ako Mommy. Sorry", nakayukong saad ni Jeremy. Without his tantrums, he's a very good son.

"Halika na nga sa loob at nang malinisan natin yang katawan at sugat mo", his mom said and pulled him on the wrist ngunit bigla itong napatigil. "Where's your new wristwatch?", tanong niya sa anak.

Itinaas naman ni Jeremy ang kamay but there was no watch there. Hindi ba't napatingin pa siya sa oras kanina? Bakit wala na ang relo niya? Did he drop it along the way?

"I- I lost it Mommy. Sorry", nakayukong wika niya. Jenny just sighed at hindi na pinagalitan ang bata. Scolding him will do no good kahit pa napakamahal ng relong iyon. Hindi na maibabalik ang nawalang relo. It was quite expensive but she just let it go and took her son to the bathroom.

Paglipas ng dalawang araw ay gumala nga sa bahay nila si Tori where they played all day long. He enjoyed her company and since then they became inseparable for years.

"May Calvin pala sa pangalan mo?", Victoria asked habang nakatingin sa ID ni Jeremy. Nasa kwarto sila at inihahanda ni Jeremy ang mga kakailanganin para sa lessons nila ngayon. He used to teach her school stuffs since she cannot afford to go to school. Thanks to him, Victoria was now able to read and write kahit hindi pa ito nakakaapak ng eskwelahan.

"Yes, my name's Calvin Jeremy. I just don't include Calvin on my name at school but my birth certificate says I'm Calvin Jeremy."

"Yaaaaaah! Dapat Calvin ang itawag ko sayo. Tapos wag mo na akong tawaging Tori. Victoria. Victoria ang itawag mo sa akin para tayo ang Underwear Couple! Ikaw yung Calvin Kleine, ako naman si Victoria Secret", natatawang wika nito.

"At gusto ko ako lang ang tatawag sayo ng Calvin."

Kahit hindi nag-aaral si Tori ay marami itong alam lalo na sa mga brand ng mga designer bags and clothes. He liked the idea of having an endearment with each other kaya pumayag siya sa tawagan nilang iyon. He was now more decided not to put Calvin on his name para si Victoria lamang ang tumawag ng ganoon sa kanya.

When Jeremy studied at Bridle, iyon lamang ang pagkakataong nagkahiwalay sila ni Victoria. They only got to see each other during weekends dahil iyon lamang ang pagkakataon na nakakauwi siya since Bridle is a boarding school. He grew with defected eyes so he got to wear glasses during high school. Hindi rin pantay ang ngipin niya kaya nagpa-brace siya. When he asked Victoria about his looks, she said that the nerdy look suits him well. Sinabi pa nito na mas mabuti daw iyon upang hindi siya maging lapitin ng mga bagong kaibigan sa school.

Victoria was afraid that he might found new friends at Bridle and forget about her. He likes Victoria so much, Jeremy was certain about it. There were some rumors about her but he just ignored it and still continued to like her no matter what. He would always look forward on weekend dahil magkikita na naman sila nito.They were on their usual study room para sa lessons nila ni Victoria.

"Kumusta naman ang pag-aaral mo Calvin?", Victoria asked as she looked at Jeremy who put all the materials on the table.

"Okay lang naman."

"May mga bagong kaibigan ka?", she asked.

"None. Wala namang nakikipag-usap sa akin. Ah, there's one. My seatmate Amber. Pero nakikipag-usap lang siya sa akin kasi parehas kami. We're both nerds."

"Ipagpapalit mo na ako sa kanya?"

"Victoria-"

"Nagjokoke ka rin ba sa kanya gaya ng mga jokes mo sa akin?"

"Hindi."

"Edi ako pa rin nakakarinig ng jokes mo?", lumiwanag ang ekspresyon ng mukha ni Victoria.

Jeremy smiled and nodded. He really liked her despite all the comments of people around them mula nang magkakilala sila. When they were younger, Lie told him to stay away from Victoria dahil magnanakaw daw ito. She used to steal small items like perfumes and lotions mula sa silid ng Mommy ni Lie. Naalala niya nung tinulungan siya noon ni Victoria. He glanced at his wristwatch at naroon pa ang relo niya but when he went home, wala na iyon and it was only Victoria who grabbed him by the wrist. Kalat na sa subdivision ang tungkol kay Victoria but Jeremy ignored all those issues. Mula ng dinala niya si Victoria sa bahay nila, walang nawawala sa kanila kaya hindi siya naniniwala sa sinasabi ng iba.

"Yehey! Fighting pa rin ang underwear couple!", Victoria cheered.

He stared at her, memorizing every detail of her face. Mula sa makapal na kulot niyang buhok, it seems to him that Goldilock's hair got nothing on Victoria's. Kahit mahirap ito, malinis ang balat nito at maging ang pananamit. Her small face is bright and always smiling, he wondered how people can say that she's a thief. He knows that it's not right to say that Victoria is not capable of doing such things because of her innocent look but it is also not right to suspect her innocent look. It could be that people only want to find her a flaw. But the latest gossips about her was impossible to ignore. Ayon sa mga sabi-sabi, Victoria stole an expensive diamond necklace. Paano naman iyon kinuha ni Victoria, look at her. Wala nga siyang kahit anong alahas sa katawan.

"Calvin bakit ang seryoso mo ngayon? May fish joke pa naman ako sa iyo. Eto ah, anong isda ang nangangarate?"

Jeremy smiled at her. "Tilap-Yaaaaaah!", he said and positioned himself like he just did a hammer fist. Natawa naman si Victoria sa kanya.

"Grabe ka talaga Calvin. Sa actions mo ako natatawa eh", she said at nagpatuloy sa pagtawa. She only stopped when she noticed that Jeremy was not in the mood to laugh.

"Calvin, may problema ba tayo?" The latter just stared at her, carefully assessing her as a whole. As he stood there, there were millions of things running in his mind. Inalala niya mula pa noong pitong taong gulang pa lamang siya. Is Victoria really a thief?

"There were rumors-"

"Na magnanakaw ako?" He slowly nodded. Deep inside him, he was hoping that she would deny all the accusations and tell him that those were just tattles made by the people. He was secretly hoping that she will tell him that she's not a thief or any of that kind.

"Totoo iyon", she said and then Jeremy felt like he was crashed. There are things that you think won't hurt but hearing it straight from the person's mouth, you'll realize that it was the most painful thing in the world. Lumapit sa kanya si Victoria ay yumakap mula sa kanyang likuran.

"Sorry Calvin. Tama sila magnanakaw ako." Victoria was crying as she hugged him and he just felt hot liquids running down his eyes.

"No, Victoria-"

"Naalala mo dati? Ninakaw ko ang relo mo", she said. Her hug became tighter like she had no intention of letting go. He didn't know what to say and he just waited for her to continue. To explain why she steals but she just kept sniffing.

"Bakit?"

"Dahil ganoon talaga ako. Pinalaki upang maging magnanakaw si Victoria-"

"Hindi ako naniniwala. There must be some reason", he said.

"Iyon lang ang rason Calvin."

"No! May nag-uutos ba sa iyo? Are they gonna punish you if you don't-"

"Wala Calvin. WALA! Ano ba ang mahirap intindihin sa sinabi ko? Mula ako sa pamilya ng magnanakaw. At ipinanganak akong magnanakaw pero ipinangako ko sa sarili ko na ang relo mo na ninakaw ko dati ang una at huling bagay na nanakawin ko sa iyo", she said and that was a reassuring word that he had heard.

Their friendship grew stronger each year. He knew that she's from a family of famous burglars but it didn't stop him from liking Victoria more and more each day. To Jeremy, she is always the woman. He was known as someone not interested in women but it is obvious that she is the exception. Despite being uneducated at school, she had this notable intelligence. She learns very fast and could even equate wits with him. She is also very beautiful. For him, she shines brighter than the stars. Every corner of her face is a masterpiece that he loves so much.

Victoria Vera is not an ordinary woman. She's clever, and she can easily outwit people with her ways. Ah, how can she steal yet no one can present a solid evidence of it? No one knows how she works. She only got her tutorials during weekend yet her intelligence was very notable. For this, he holds her in high esteem. This is why she is "always the woman." No other woman can make a nerdy Jeremy sway like she does.

He doesn't believe that promises are meant to be broken and Victoria just proved to her that it is not really meant to be broken. What she proved is that promises are meant to be FORGOTTEN. Yes, she never break her promise that the watch will be the last thing that she will steal from him. She just forgot that promise and brought someone to steal something precious from Jeremy. Nalaman na lamang niya na may dinalang kasabwat si Victoria nang minsang tinuturuan niya ito.

No one was in the house that time maliban sa kanila and Victoria let her cousin steal a ring that was very precious to his Mom. It was a ring that was given by her deceased husband. At parang isang bulang nawala lang iyon. What hurts the most is that the robbery happened the moment he was confessing to her at the study room. That was the time that Jeremy was into Amber's books about Sherlock Holmes and it made him interested into codes and ciphers. He borrowed a lot of books from Amber and Gray.

He even bought a basic cryptography book. He gave Victoria her first basic code to break. Victoria sat on the table as she stared on the 16-letter message.

Jeremy encoded the letter by simply replacing the letter of his message by the letter preceding it in the alphabet. Victoria can decrypt it by shifting each letter one space forward in the alphabet. He gave her time to think about it. When her phone rang, she wrote her reply on a piece of paper, folded it and handed it to him.

"Saka mo na buksan kapag nakaalis na ako", she said. She was smiling sadly and she hugged him tighly before she disappeared through the doorway. Before he can open the letter, the burglar alarm in his Mom's room rang. Nanginginig ang kamay niya habang binubuklat iyon. It took him a while before he decided to read her message and it was also encrypted the way he encrypted his message.

After reading it, he realized two things. First, something valuable was stolen in her mother's room. Second, his affection was not reciprocated.

Amber's POV

"Je?", I called his name many times but he's really spacing out. Kanina pa siya ganito. He keeps on complaining that he's very hungry but when the steak was served, he just stared at it without even touching. Kahit hanggang sa papunta na kami ng airport. He never talked and it really puzzled us. Kasalukuyan na kaming lulan ng taxi pabalik ng Bridle. The few hours flight was fine and we landed safely. Kanina ko pa iniiwasang tingnan si Gray, he was chatting with Isabel all the time while Math was busy talking with Janissa at naiwan ako sa tabi ni Jeremy na nakatulala lamang.

"Je..."

I snapped my fingers in front of him at saka ko pa lamang nakuha ang atensyon niya.

"Oh, Bestie?"

"Anong problema mo?", I asked. When he let out a big sigh, I know that it is something big. Sinulyapan niya si Gray na nakaupo sa harapan at nakapikit. Maging si Math na nasa tabi ko ay tulog din.

"Bestie, why do they call it a heartbreak when all other parts of your body hurts too?", he asked. Napatingin ako nang diretso sa kanya. I was waiting for him to spill his pun but he didn't. Sa halip ay nagpatuloy ito sa seryosong tono nito.

"Nothing hurts more than realizing she meant everything to you and you meant nothing to her", wika niya. I don't understand why he's so serious like this. Now I am very curious about what happened to him before. Maybe he had some recollections and that's what made him sad and gloomy.

"Bestie, alam mo ba kung bakit may black eye ang juice?", he asked out of the blue.

"HA?" Uh, why the sudden shift of the topic? "May blackeye?"

"Oo. Alam mo kung bakit?", he asked and I shook my head.

"Hindi mo alam? Luh, kaya may black eye kasi NASA PACK. Get's mo Bestie? Ikaw ba masapak, di ka ba magkakablack eye? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" He started laughing so hard the usual way he does with his puns. It made Math and Gray wake up at patuloy pa rin ito sa pagtawa.

Uh, mukhang flip na nga si Jeremy.

Just then my phone rang at agad kong tiningnan iyon. There were 7 missed calls there. Dalawa ang mula kay Zywon, dalawa kay Ryu at tatlo naman ang mula kay Cooler. Eh?

What's with these Vanders?

Hindi ko namalayan ang tawag nila kanina. Muli iyong tumunog at nang tingnan ko ang caller ID, it was from Cooler.

"Cooler-"

"Where are you?", bungad niya sa akin mula sa kabilang linya. His voice was so worried and I wonder what's wrong.

"I'm in a taxi heading to Bridle. I just returned from our Mindanao trip-"

"Just stay in your dorm okay?" Bigla na lamang akong sinalakay ng kaba. Why is he talking weird?

"Cooler, what's wrong?", I asked. Maging si Gray na nasa harapan ay napalingon sa akin. He looked at me with a worried expression.

"I had this feeling that something bad will happen. Basta, just stay with Gray, he will keep you safe." Hindi na niya hinintay ang sagot ko at agad na pinatay ang tawag. I was left dumbfounded at the moment.
