Chapter 54: The Culprit is a Ghoul
(Part 2 Resolution Chapter)

We did not waste any time. Agad kaming iginiya ni Isabel sa silid kung nasaan ang katawan na natagpuan nila sa bakuran ng bahay ng mga Milano. It was a girl with her heart ripped and was missing. The body was preserved and Isabel supplied us the essential information about the corpse. Ayon dito ay pagkatapos na ng kasal nila balak na i-cremate ang bangkay ng kapamilya.

"That's my cousin Emelyn, 19 years old. She went missing three days ago and then we found her body yesterday, buried on the yard", paliwanag nito. That explains why the body was muddy. May bahagi ng katawan nito na may mga lupa. I don't want to think how the cold ground was when the body was buried.

"Oh, I can't take it", Je said at nag-iwas ng tingin. Emelyn's corpse wasn't pleasant to the sight kaya naiintindihan ko ang reaksyon ni Je. Her chest was opened and as Gray tried to touched its inside with his gloved hand, her organ was really missing.

He looked at Math who was also focusing on the dead body. "Hey, are you sure about this friend of you that you said earlier?"

Lumiwanag ang mukha ni Math at kinuha niya ang kanyang cellphone. "Yup. My cousin Walter can help us, excuse me." She dialled a number and waited for someone to pick it up. We waited for few seconds for someone to pick up the call at hindi naman kami nabigo.

"Kuya Walter! I need your help!", Math said to that someone on the other line.

Pause.

"Please just on this thing?"

Pause.

"Yes, thanks. Aren't you working with a known anthropologist? You know, the one that you told me who went -Yes that guy. You're good friends aren't you? Could you ask him more about cannibalism or existence of ghouls?", bahagya siyang tumahimik at nakinig. "Yes, yes. We found a body with a ripped chest and she's missing her heart. I'll call you back, thank you."

Math faced us and shrugged her shoulders. "He said he'll try his best. He's not sure about a missing heart as some sort of cannibalism. He said ghouls of the legends do feed on human flesh and internal organs but it doesn't mean that this is some sort of cannibalism. It could be some case of human organ trafficking."

"Well I think it is cannibalism", Gray said. He pointed on the body at napatingin kaming lahat doon. A part of her flesh was missing na para bang nilapa iyon ng malaking aso. It was on her shoulders near her neck. There were teeth marks on the side but we're not really sure if those are teeth marks of a human. It could be of dog or any other animals.

"What now? We're not some sort of forensics experts and we cannot identify such teeth marks", wika ko sa kanila. Whatever was the culprit's reason of pulling out Emelyn's heart, only she or she knows it. What I know is that what the culprit did is so inhuman.

"Oh, the man I just called is an expert on that!", wika ni Math at muling kinuha ang kanyang cellphone. She dialled the number again and waited for that someone to answer again.

"Yeah, it's me again. I know you're on your break from your job but could you do me some favor? Favor like identifying whose teeth marks are these that we found?"

Pause.

"Thanks. I'll send the photos to you Kuya Walter and oh, we're out of time by the way. If you can do it in an hour, it will be a big help. Thanks!"

Muli siyang humarap sa amin na may malaking ngiti sa mukha.

"What is this cousin of yours working for Math?", tanong ni Jeremy. I also wonder what does that guy do.

"He's a forensic analyst and he got so many connections. I always consult him whenever I have some doubts about the case that I'm investigating. So what are we gonna do now?", she asked. Sinimulan na niya kunan ng larawan ang sugat ng katawan. She took more close-up pictures to emphasize the bite marks on the skin.

I remembered what Isabel said kanina habang nasa talon kami. "Hey, didn't you say that you had two family members who are missing yet isa lamang ang nakita ninyo?"

Tumango sa akin si Isabel. "Yes, Kuya Rene is still missing." She became sadder when she said her cousin's name.

"How about let's find him?"

"Sounds a great idea to me", Math said. She kept her phone on her pocket pagkatapos niyang ipadala ng mga nakuhang litrato sa kanyang pinsan.

Napasimangot si Jeremy sa amin nang akmang palabas na kami ng silid. "I would have said that I don't want to go with you but I can't. The zombie might come and feed on my flesh-"

"Zombies eat brains, they would skip you since you don't have a brain", biro ni Math sa kanya. These two are getting along nicely, aren't they?

"Really Math? I doubt that."

Hindi na siya pinansin ni Math. Tumawa lamang ito at nagpatuloy sa paglalakad. She didn't bother to comment back to his statement. "I already sent Kuya Walter the photos, he said he will call me if he figures out what made those marks."

Palabas na kami ng pinto nang makasalubong namin ang isang matandang lalaki. He doesn't look really old but he was carrying a cane as he walks. May kasama itong babae na inaalalayan siya sa paglalakad. The woman must be of the same age as he is but looks a lot stronger than him.

"Isabel", wika ng babae nang makita si Isabel. "May kasama ka palang mga kaibigan. Alam na ba ito ni Noel?"

Isabel gave her a nod. "Yes Tita Rosena. We meet him on the living room with Tito Eric. By the way these are my friends Gray, Amber, Math and Jeremy. Guys, this is Tita Rosena and her husband Tito Charles."

We greeted them and Tita Rosena did the same, maliban sa kanyang asawa na walang reaksyon. His eyes tell us that he doesn't want to see us in this house though. Oh, that's how oldies are so I must get used to it. I noticed that he was shivering as he was holding his cane.

"Mauna na kami sa taas Isabel, Charles got his headache again. Kailangan na muna naming magpahinga", paalam ni Tita Rosena at iginiya na niya ang kanyang asawa sa paglalakad. Ah, he's really sickly.

"Sorry about Tito Charles. He's old and sickly kaya medyo hindi maganda ang pagtanggap niya sa inyo but the truth is mabait yun, he's actually my favourite uncle here", paghingi ng paumanhin ni Isabel.

"That's fine. By the way, what's his ailment?", tanong ni Gray habang tinatanaw ang papalayong mag-asawa.

"We don't know. He doesn't want to be hospitalized. He hates it. Let's go now."

Nagsimula na kaming maghanap ng mga kahina-hinalang bahagi ng bakuran. We visited the spot where Emelyn's body was found but we cannot found another body there. The culprit must have hidden it somewhere. The question is where?

Biglang tumunog ang cellphone ni Math at agad naman niyang sinagot iyon. Lumapit kami sa kanya and she turned on the speaker on.

"Kuya Walter."

"Thilde, you owe me one for this", wika ng boses sa cellphone. "As of the teeth marks that you've sent, it's no doubt human teeth."

"Human teeth?"

"Yeah. Basing on the mark, the teeth who have bitten- oh, not just bitten but gnawed and chewed are made up of four incisors with a continuous arch and that makes it a human teeth marks. And I also consulted Mr. Sanders about that cannibalism and he did give me data about it. I'll send it on your account", wika ng pinsan ni Math.

"Thanks. You're the best." Agad niyang pinatay ang tawag at nababahalang tiningnan kami. "I knew it. It's really some sort of cannibalism. But why her heart? Why does the culprit didn't feed on most of her body, just a few bites?"

"Maybe he doesn't like the taste of it", biro ni Je. He acted like he zipped his mouth nang parehas namin siyang sinamaan ng tingin. It's not a good time to joke something like that.

"That's still a question that we need to find out", Gray said. "Let's go back inside."

"Hey Isabel!", bati isang lalaaki, he looks like he's on his late 20's. Nakaharang siya sa daraanan namin.

"Hey Roger", sagot ni Isabel dito.

"You brought friends with you? I thought Tito Noel prohibits that one", wika ni Roger. He smirked at us and I have this instant feeling of hate to him. I felt Jeremy nudged my elbows and he whispered to me.

"I hate the guy by just looking at him."

I gave him a So-do-I look and he keeps quiet on my side. Sinagot naman ni Isabel ang lalaki.

"Basically yes, but he's already informed about this Roger."

Muli kaming sinuri ng mga mata nito.
"Basing on their inquisitive look, I guess you told them about what's happening in the family. Tsk, tsk tsk. Same old Isabel who couldn't keep her mouth shut", wika nito and he even let out an annoying laugh. "So what are these kids gonna do?"

Math stepped forward towards him. "We're not kids."

"Oh, a cat. A feisty cat. I would have said that these girls are cute but I cannot. They know about this scandal that the family will be facing if ever and if they're gonna be the source, they're not cute at all", Roger said at isa-isa kaming sinamaan ng tingin. "You never changed Isabel, you always put the family's name into shame."

Pagkasabi niyon ay nilagpasan na kami ni Roger at naiwan namang napayuko si Isabel.

"Sorry about that. My relatives aren't friendly, si Mama lang naman talaga ang mabait sa kanilang magkakapatid, unfortunately, death comes to those who are good but favouring the opposite by giving them longer life. That's how unfair the world is."

A tear fell from her eye at mahinang tinapik ni Gray ang kanyang balikat. The next thing we know ay niyakap na niya si Gray.

"What the-"

I felt Math pinched my arm while Jeremy squeezed my elbows. I don't know what those are for dahil ang alam ko ay niyayakap ni Isabel si Gray. And all I wanna do right now is pull the girl away from Gray but of course I cannot just do that.

But what's wrong with comforting people by the way? At ano naman ngayon kung magkayakap sila? Not that I have the right on Gray, I do not own him. What are we by the way? Classmates? Friends? Seatmates? Oh, I don't know. Not because he kissed me on the lips a few time doesn't mean I have ownership and control over him. Hindi rin ito gaya ng partnership business that those with more controlling interest shall prevail. Yes, we kissed a few times already but he doesn't put any label on it. And I don't want to assume.

Nauna ng bumitaw si Gray mula sa pagkakayakap ni Isabel. "You're staying with your relatives in this house, well not a bad place for an extended family." He was trying to dodge the topic. Maybe he felt awkward about it too and just like me, hindi siya magaling magpayo. Cooler and Khael does.

Pinahid ni Isabel ang kanyang mga luha. Oh, did she really cry?

"Yeah, this house belongs to my great grandfather and he wants his children to stay in this house hanggang sa magkaapo sila. Family traditions."

"Tell me about each member", Gray said.

Isabel led us towards the dining hall, offered us coffee and homemade pizzas at doon na siya nagkwento ng mga kung anu-anong tungkol sa pamilya Milano.

"Tito Charles the eldest among the four siblings, followed by Tito Noel, then my mom who passed away and Tito Eric, asawa niya si Tita Jean. Anak ni Tito Charles si Farhan, anak naman ni Tito Eric si Roger at Kuya Rene . Tito Noel didn't get a wife dahil abala siya sa pamamahala ng family business. He's more responsible than Tito Charles na walang ibang ginawa kundi ang magliwaliw sa ibang bansa. It was recently when he went to India, usually he travels on South America."

"How about Emelyn?", tanong ko sa kanya.

"Emelyn is an illegitimate child of Tito Noel. He got her from his girlfriend and raised her here."

"Bestie", wika ni Jeremy at kinalabit ako.

"Hmm?"

"Diba paborito mo ang pizza? Why aren't you eating?", Jeremy asked at isinubo ang huling bahagi ng pizza na nasa kamay niya.

I stared at the homemade pizza that was served before us. Katunayan, sa aming apat, si Jeremy lamang ang ngumunguya. The three of us just sipped our coffee. The food was enticing to the sight, no doubt about it but I just can't let myself eat it. Napansin marahil ni Isabel ang pananahimik ko kaya mahinang tumawa siya.

"You don't want to eat Amber because you might be thinking Amber that this might be a human meat on the toppings, right?", she asked.

Bigla na lamang napaubo si Jeremy at iniluwa ang kanyang nginunguya. Ew, gross.

"It's not like that Isa-"

"No it's alright. If I would be on your situation. I wouldn't want to eat also something that was offered by a stranger wwith some doubts of cannibalism in her family-"

Sumingit na si Gray sa usapan. "No, it's not like that Isabel. Busog lamang kami."

"It's okay Gray, I understand", she answered as he watched Je putting his chewed food back on the plate. The pizza was really chewed but Je has the guts to return it on the saucer.

"Math please show us the files that were sent to you", pag-iiba ni Gray sa usapan. The latter did as what she was told. Ipinasa niya iyon sa amin ni Gray while Jeremy was busy cleaning his mouth. Uh, he's seriously upset about it. Yan kasi, ang takaw-takaw, well anyways, we're not yet sure if it is really human flesh that made up the pizza's toppings.

I read the files and it was a study about history of cannibalism that was based on the study on the Gimi of the Papua Nuew guinea, the Wari people and the Aghori. It was stated there that some ruituals includes roasting of the brain, the heart and lever and then it will be placed on a clean ceremonial maths and feed to everyone. The Wari believe that consuming their family members will contribute to their inner strength. I wanna puke on the thought of eating the heart of a family member.

"As of now, I don't find anything useful on these files maybe later after we can find the other body", Gray said. He kept his phone on his pocket at humarap sa amin. "Isabel why don't you show us around the house?"

Pumayag si Isabel sa sinabi ni Gray at sinamahan niya kami sa mga bakanteng kwarto sa taas. The house was considerably huge, maybe as huge as the Vander mansion only that this house was only made of two floors. Pinasok namin ang mga silid sa itaas and searched for any possible place where the culprit could kept a dead body but we couldn't find it. Sa halip ay isang wakwak na damit na maya mga bahid ng dugo ang natagpuan namin.

"Oh, I think there are really ghouls and they feed on your cousins", wika ni Je nang makita ang damit. It was ripped by strong force at may mga dugo doon.

"Do you recognize this shirt?", tanong ko and Isabel nodded.

"That- that belongs to Kuya Rene!"

"Look further!", utos ni Gray and we began searching the place again. Malaki ang silid at medyo creepy ang paligid. I would have considered it since mukhang iba ang relihiyon ng kapamilya ni Isabel. I think their religion varied since we passed a room where I saw a crucifix and other statues. May silid din na tanging isang kaban lang ang naroon and there was a mat at nakasarang libro which Isabel referred to as Qour'an. She said Farhan was converted into Islam and that makes the family divided into different religions. I wonder how they are able to live at the same house but with different custom and religion.

"Isabel maari mo bang sabihin sa amin kung anu-ano ang relihiyon ng bawat isa sa inyo dito?", wika ni Math.

"Why? Does it matter?"

Math rolled her eyes at Isabel. "Duh, of course. Who knows the one with odd traditions and religious rituals is the cannibal."

Naalala ko ang nangyari kanina. Back then, Isabel was certain that there is this ghoul or cannibal within her family. She also trusted us immediately which is bit peculiar to me. If I would be the stranger, I wouldn't trust six high school students that I just met for a few minutes and tell them about the suspicions that we had at home regarding a scandalous subject. I stared at her from the back, there's nothing wrong with her physically. In fact, she's so flawless that you'd think that she had been blessed with such tanned skin. Bakit nga ba?

She let out a sigh bago nagsalita. "Tito Charles is an atheist. He believes that he is god himself. He used to travel to different places to find the best religion but I guess he hasn't found any. Madalas silang mag-away ni Tita Rosena dahil doon, she's a Roman Catholic by the way. Si Tito Noel naman, well he's a freemason."

"Yeah, I noticed his ring, similar with someone I knew who's also a freemason", komento ni Gray.

Nagpatuloy naman sa pagsasalita si Isabel. "Mom's a catholic and so as we. Tito Eric was converted into a Muslim at maging si Farhan while the other members are born again Christians of different ministries."

"Everything except the freemason is clear to me, can you please enlighten me first?", Jeremy said and gave us a questioning look.

"It's consist of fraternal organizations that consist their origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons. Binubuo ng dalawang recognition groups ang modern freemasonry. The regular freemasonry and continental freemasonry. The regular one insist to open a scripture in a working lodge, walang babae na bahagi, each member must profess a belief in diety at ipinagbabawal ang pag-uusap tungkol sa relihiyon at pulitika", sagot ni Gray.

"I guess that's where Tito belongs", Isabel said.

If I were to choose who had the weird religious beliefs among them, I think I would choose Noel who is a freemason. I'm not really familiar with that fraternal organization so it would be suspicious to me. But of course we cannot just base it on such hunch. I don't want to hate Isabel too by pointing it out like how she got her suspicion.

"But Isabel..." napabaling ang atensyon nilang lahat sa akin. Uh, how should I say this?

"Yes Amber?"

"I was just wondering..." I'm really hesitant to this this.

"About?"

"How can you immediately tell us that you are suspecting this as a case of cannibalism? Why do you trusted on us by telling us all about these kahit kakakilala pa lamang natin? I'm just wondering." There I said it.

Bahagyang naningkit ang mga mata ni Isabel. She took a deep sigh at tiningnan kami ng isa-isa. I know that she also hates me this moment gaya nung nangyari sa kusina where I have this suspicion of human meat as the pizza's toppings.

"You are always suspicious, aren't you?", she asked. See? The kitten has claws.

"Just curious."

"Tama ka nga Bestie, if it is me, I wouldn't trust a moody boy next door, a handsome quizmaster, a thin radish and a furniture shop owner", sabat ni Jeremy. Is he referring to me as the thin radish? What the hell?

"What's with the description?", Math appealed. Je stick out his tongue to the latter at gumaya naman ito. I want to give each of them a punch in the face. This isn't the best time to talk about something like that.

"Bakit nga ba Isabel?"

She flashed this pity face and it makes me want to pull her hair for doing so. She's not cute in such gesture, duh.

"I just had this feeling that you can be trusted...or atleast Gray is", she said and darted a glare at me. Okay, there is that imaginary war between the two of us. "I know you wouldn't believe it but that is true. Isa pa ay hindi lamang ngayon na nangyari ito."

We all gave her a questioning look. Ibig ba niyang sabihin na nangyari na ito dati?

"What do you mean?"

"This isn't the first time that this happened. Noong kabataan pa nina Mama, her cousin experienced the same fate. She was found with a missing arm and some of her body where gnawed. We thought na baka may gumagalang aswang dati but we never heard of such rumour in the neighbourhood. Namatay din ang tatlong taong gulang na pmangkin ko, and his heart was missing as well as some part of his flesh. That's when we started to believe that those are made by ghouls."

It already happened before? But why wouldn't the family take actions for such thing? It is very alarming!

"Uh-oh. I think I found the body", narinig namig wika ni Jeremy. He was looking at a small room for cleaning materials. May nakahilatang katawan doon, one which we were looking for. His organs were missing at gaya ni Emelyn, some part of her flesh looked like it was torn. I cannot bring to imagine how was the culprit gnawed it like he's some sort of ghoul who fed on such body.

Bigla na lamang napaiyak si Isabel dahil nang makita ang katawan ng pinsan. It was really so merciless seeing his body ripped. Sino nga ba ang may gawa nito? Come to think of it, there are so many of them here who must be responsible for this.

Tito Charles, the eldest, despite his being sickly condition, we cannot just disregard him as a possible suspect for this inhuman crime as well as his wife. Tito Noel, who shows how he dislikes us, could be the suspect too. Maybe he decided to keep this as secret to the police dahil ayaw niyang malaman nila na siya ang may gawa niyon. Tito Eric can do it too. Pwede rin naman na ang mga pinsan ni Isabel, in fact each one of them must have done it, even Isabel.

We've been busy investigating it at iminungkahi ni Isabel na magpahinga muna kami. Hindi naming namalayan ang oras at malapit na palang dumilim. She let us stay on a room na may mga kama kung saan kami pwedeng magpahinga. She served cookies and tea for us at iniwan kami doon para sa iba pa niyang paghahanda sa kasal ng pinsan niya bukas.

"Janissa keeps on asking me where I am. I told her I have some important case to do but I promised her na darating talaga ako sa kasal niya bukas. This case is a little bit creepy by the way. Ngayon lamang ako nakaexperience ng ganitong uri ng kaso. The cases that I usually solved are murders and robbery, I solved all of them by the way", Math said. Here she goes with her bragging again.

"Walag nagtatanong", wika ni Je at sinamaan to ng tingin ni Math.
Napansin kong tila abala si Gray sa kanyang cellphone so I asked him what he was doing.

"I did a thorough research about the files that were sent by Math's cousin", he said and he continued scrolling on his phone.

"And? Do you find something useful?"

"Not really. I'm just equipped with the knowledge about these groups with history of cannibalism. That's all I've got for now", wika niya.

"This is really weird and scary. Eating human flesh huh? Uh, I feel sick by just imagining it", Je said and he acted like he puke.

Sick?

I noticed how Gray's reaction lightened up when he heard the word sick. Unti-untinhg sumilay sa labi nito ang kakaibang ngiti at ningning ng mata na lumalabas lamang tuwing may nalulutas itong kaso.

"Sick? That's it!", he said alertly.

"Yeah, what's with being sick?", Math asked.

"Don't you get it? Someone who eats raw human flesh will get sick! That's it!", excited na wika ni Gray.

Just then we heard a knock on the door at iniluwa niyon ang isang kasambahay at nag-yaya ito na kumain na. She said that everyone where on the dining table already at kami na lamang ang hinihintay. Pinauna na kami ni Gray dahil may tatawagan daw siyang importante. It was late so we decided to continue the investigation early tomorrow. Ayaw rin naman naming ipagpatuloy iyon sa gabi dahil baka makadisturbo kami sa pamilya.

At the dinner table, where informed everyone about Rene's body, the ambiance was gloomier than it was when we arrived. During the dinner, I can barely swallow my food dahil kasama namin ang bawat miyembro ng pamilya Milano and they're not that friendly to us.

"So when do your guests plan to leave Isabel?", tanong ni Tito Noel habang kumakain kami. Dahil sa sinabi niyang iyon ay mas nawalan ako ng ganang kumain. It was so hard to swallow the food in front of me with them watching. Gayundin si Gray na kakaupo lamang, he didn't even bothered to reach for anything to eat.

"We'll leave shortly tonight sir, after we will tell you who's responsible for the deaths of your member", matatag ang boses na wika ni Gray. Everyone draw their attention to him. Marahan pang inilapag ni Tita Rosena ang kanyang kubyertos at tumingin sa direksyon ni Gray. Lahat ng reakston nila ay tila nais malaman kung ano ang ibig sabihin ni Gray.

"Anong ibig mong sabihin? You know who did all of those things kid?", bahagyang tumawa si Tito Eric. "Kid, don't make a fool out of us."

"We're not. I actually know who did it."

"What are you huh? Let's give it a try, if you say so. Then who is this ghoul within the family huh?", wika ni Tito Noel, I can sense the mockery in his voice.

Then Gray already figured it out then?

Gray looked intently at Sir Charles. "You used to travel to Brazil right? And recently you just came from India and both places have history of cannibalism on them. The Wari people are from Brazil while the Aghori is from India. Hindi kaya dahil sa pagliliwaliw mo ay nakuha mo na ang tradisyong iyon mula sa mga tribu doon?", Gray asked with conviction. Natahimik ang lahat sa mesa habang hinihintay ang sagot ni Sir Charles. His wife could hardly breath, samantalang naibagsak naman ni Isabel ang kutsara at tinidor sa mesa.

Napahagalpak ng tawa si Sir Charles. "You have a point on there little boy but such deduction is a bit lousy. So what if I travel to those places? It doesn't mean that I did it."

"Eating raw human flesh will make you sick and we call such as prion disease or the kuru. Sir Charles, you're the one who showed such signs and symptoms of the disease. Ayaw mong magpaospital dahil doon, you're afraid to let them know that you have a prion disease. Your shivering, headaches and incapable of walking without support are the basic symptoms of such disease and I confirmed such symptoms from a doctor."

"Kuya Charles...." Halos hindi makapaniwala si Tito Noes a kanyang narinig. "Totoo ba? Is that really the reason why you've been sickly but you avoided medical attentions at all?"

From that moment, I thought Sir Chares was going to deny it again but he didn't.

"You don't understand me Noel. What I did is the right thing. It is a spiritual right to share the life force-"

Hindi na nito natapos ang sasabihin dahil bigla na lamang dumapo ang palad ni Tita Rosena sa mukha nito.

"Bakit Charles? Bakit? They're your family! Kung gayon lahat ng mga kakaibang bagay na inuuwi mo sa mga lakad mo, those aren't souvenirs but object of your false beliefs!"

"Hindi niyo ako naiintindihan. It's a way to preserve strength... a direct path to...."

"Hindi naming kailangan ang paliwanag mo Kuya Charles. You killed family members and there is no sane explanation that could change our mind to keep you from getting what you deserved after all you've done", buo ang boses na wika ni Tito Noel. He got his phone and dialled a number. He was calling the police that time habang. Hindi pa rin halos makapaniwala ang bawat isa but it was all admitted by Sir Charles.

We left after the police arrived at matapos makapagpasalamat sa amin si Isabel. We decided not to interfere further into their family affairs. They still have to talk within the family para sa kaayosan ng kanilang pamilya. While on our way to the hotel ay hindi ko maiwasang maisip ang tungkol doon.
