CHAPTER TWO: ALIVE
HE HATED MORNINGS, he began his morning carrying bucket of water to his tent from the river. He didn't like living like this but his mother keeps insisting that it's for short-term. He didn't like this one bit.
"Tommy, you got to be kidding me," he looked up. "Let me guess your uncle, Jack. Told you to get some water after I specifically told him, I will," Shane mumbled, he turn his head shaking in disbelief.
"Dad, wait. Mom said she needed water, I offered to get it for her, since I didn't see you around." Tommy assured him, trying to stop him from knocking his uncle. "I get that. Did Jack told you get this by yourself?"
He stared at him for a long second. "Yes." Shane shook his head. "This man can't come here and boss you around. Your better than him, Tommy. I'll knock some sense into your uncle." Shane quickly walked to the other side, Tommy followed behind trying to hold the bucket water he didn't want to spill. When they arrived in the tent, he saw his mother sleeping peacefully. Shane quickly left the tent stopping Tommy. "Where the hell is your uncle, Tommy?"
"I don't know." Tommy spoke, confidently.
Shane rolls his eyes. "When I see your uncle, I'll swear he won't ever ask you anything else ever again, especially in a time like this go by yourself."
Shane began to walked away then he stop. "Did your mom tell you?" He stared wide-eyed at him unaware. "Carl and I will be going down to the river to bring more water for everybody. I told her to tell you, so you can come." Tommy raised his eyebrow, he saw his mother all day at no point she mention about his invitation.
"Yes, she did." He lied, gritting his teeth, furious. "Alright, Tommy you're coming?" He began walking, Tommy stayed behind.
"You coming!" He asked.
Tommy shook his head refusing to go further. "I'll be heading back to Mom. She needs me, I'll make sure to catch with you later." Shane looks at Tommy once more, staring distinctly at him. He looked so much like Rick, but his eyes. Tommy had his mother eyes.
"I'll see you later, Tommy." Shane began walking, trying to find Carl and Lori.
He had spend his time following his mother around. He helped her with laundry, as she placed pins on the rope, putting Shane laundry first.
"Mom, how come you didn't tell me, that dad wanted to take me to get some water?" He questioned holding the basket. His mother sighed knowing fully well he'll come to know. "I forgot, Tommy. My mind must be somewhere else." She told him confidently, placing more of Shane clothes, up.
"Are you sure?" He asked again. Marie rolled her eyes getting annoyed. "Tommy, I forgot." She began placing the clothes up, more harshly. "Mom?"
"Jesus, Tommy. Go on now, go find your uncle and asked him for extra supplies!" She responded taking the basket from him, annoyed. Something must have happen between Shane and his mom.
He never thought the world will to a end. He couldn't imagined there would flesh eating monsters, wandering waiting to launched it self on a living thing. No one knew what this outbreak was, or how it started, but it was enough to make everyone fear the ones who had been unlucky enough to catch it.
It had been two months since everything went to complete shit, two months living in this camp. Two months, of surviving. He realized something during those two months, so did his mother. Shane was sleeping with Lori, everyone in the camp knew. He hated that Lori will betray his mother like that, so did his father. He knows deep down, Shane still loves him even though he doesn't show the same care for his mother, he does for him. Even though his biological dad is dead he couldn't find himself to wonder what would have been if he knew about him. And if he had a chance to say goodbye. He wanted to do all those thing but the world ended, so did his hope.
"Tommy, come here." Tommy looked to the side saw Carol calling him over.
"Is something wrong?" He asked. "Do me a favor? Watch Sophia, I'll be back, need to grab some items for me." He nods, but he couldn't understand why would she wanted him to watch over Sophia while Ed was there.
"Sophia, where is your mother?" A loud voice echo. Sophia immediately jumped and stood behind him. "Who the hell are you?" He spoke, angrily. Tommy winced knowing fully well he shouldn't get involved in situations like this.
"Carol asked me to take care of her while she go get some things." He responded confidently. Ed raised his eyebrow, shocked. "She leave her own daughter with a stranger."
"She is your daughter, too." He responded. Ed roll his eyes, he took of sip of alcohol he carried on the other side of his hand. "Sophia when your mom gets here tell her to come find me." Ed proceeded to go inside his tent leaving Sophia and him, alone outside.
"He can be mean sometimes."
Tommy lightly smiled. "Be careful around him, Sophia. Take care of your mom, too."
Sophia nodded smiling. "You look like Carl." She blurted leaving him confused. "Huh?"
"Carl said you were his brother. He also said you carried a deck of cards. Can we play?" Sophia leaned forward. Tommy smiled lightly as he stared at Sophia. He felt like he needed to protect her, she is sweet girl and very innocent. "Yes, of course." He smiled looking through his pocket for a deck of cards, suddenly he dropped it onto the floor he immediately started to pick it up when someone stood in front of him stepping on the pile of cards. "Now ain't it weird your bending on your knees in front of me," a voice mumbled. He looked as he stared right into pair of blue piercing eyes.
"Annalisa?" He questioned.
Annalisa Dixon, is the youngest sibling of the Dixon brothers. There is Merle, the oldest, the most troubling, then Daryl, the redneck who can't keep his mouth shut. All Dixon's were located on one side of the camp, his parents would tell him never to go that side.
"Don't stare, get up." She spoke causing him to blinked twice. "He is red," spoke Sophia causing him to hide his face from embarrassment.
"I can see that. You should really look around. Your surroundings, Tom." Annalisa winked her right eye, walking forward leaving him dumbfounded. There is no doubt she is beautiful and has spunky attitude that he finds so attracted.
Later on in the day, Tommy was sitting
next to Carl holding up a dead frog, which he was incredibly proud of. He laughed, and smiled widely at him.
"Good one, squirt." Tommy chuckled at his little brother, giving him a thumbs up, before turning to look over at Shane. "Took awhile but we got it." Shane smiled, he smiled back as he studied the frogs
"Tommy, where is your mother?" He asked. Tommy looked up, shrugs unsure. "I don't know, Shane."
Shane shakes his head in disbelief. "Oh, that's alright. I'll go find her, stay with Carl."
Tommy stood beside Carl watching, how he held up those frogs.
"Where's Shane going?" Carl asked, with a frown, as he watched Shane walk away from them.
"He said he is going find to my mom." Tommy told him, not wanting to go into more detail. "Why don't you show me what Shane taught?"
This caused Carl to squeal out in excitement and drag Tommy towards the edge of the lake, to show him what he had learned. They both smiled at each other enjoying laughter, he cherished it.
He began to followed Amy, a girl much older than him. "Look, Tommy, I hope the world come back as it is."
Tommy nods. Amy has been like best friend since he got here. She admits she's is pretty girl, he did grew to admire her so far being trapped in this place. "I really hope, so," he mumbled. He loved having a conversation with her, as she was closer to his age, other than Glenn and Annalisa. Glenn was in Atlanta on a supply run with some of the others at the moment, and Annalisa is left by herself usually wondering around camp, looking for equipment.
Throughout the two months of being with the group, he had become closest to Amy and Glenn, although they were both a bit older than her, they all found comfort in each other, being around the same age. Amy was his best friend, like a sister. And Glenn is like a brother to him, best guy friend. Annalisa is complicated person unlike the others who treat him like a adult, Annalisa treats him like a kid she is rude, cranky, and always teasing him leaving him sometimes red. She is older by two years only, he is only seventeen years old. Still growing, becoming much more as a adult. His mom and Lori will always tell him to stay away from Annalisa he intended to stay away from her area of the camp, as Merle and Daryl seem to put him on edge whenever he was around her.
He will hear Merle call him "loverboy" which he didn't seem to like. He doesn't have confidence something he seems not to inherit from his dad. By that he means Rick Grimes. The town sheriff, the hero who got shot to bring justice to some criminals.
"Don't worried, Tommy, we're going to be okay." Amy smiled as she sat beside him. He noticed Annalisa passing by, watching them closely, from the other side of the tent.
"We have to be lucky that we'd have people who loved us, still alive." Amy mentioned. "I have Andrea. And you have your parents. We're lucky don't forget that."
Tommy nods deeply. "I'm lucky, I'm alive." He mumbled. Everybody in camp thinks he is the son of Shane and Marie Walsh. He couldn't blame them, they would seen Shane called him son or sometimes make him do chores, he couldn't complain his biological father is dead and Shane is the only person he has.
Their conversation was cut short when they heard a loud car alarm blaring from the distance, moving towards their camp quickly, causing everyone to look around in confusion at what it could be, and why it was headed towards camp.
"Hey Dale, can you see what that is?" Shane called, wondering about the approaching car, asking Dale as he could see from the top of the RV. "Talk to me, Dale!" He shouted again, looking towards the sound. "I can't tell yet." Dale told them, looking through his binoculars into the distance. "Is it them? Are they back yet?" Amy got up marched towards Shane, hoping that her sister was back. "I'll be damned." Dale muttered, looking through his binoculars.
Tommy stood by the distance watching them. He could hear the noises getting closer. His mom appeared behind him pulling him closer.
"A stolen car is my guess." Dale blurted our, who furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and turned around to get a better look at the car. Why would someone with a stolen car be coming up to camp? How did they even know about this place? Glenn suddenly pulled up to the camp in a red sports car and got out in an instant. Tommy eyes widen he immediately wanted to go forward and hug him but his mother stopped him, grabbing him his hand.
"Not now, Tommy." Tommy gaze at Glenn who took a quick glance at him noticing the interaction between him and his mom. His attention was focus when Amy walked up to him kept mumbling the some words. He noticed the look on Shane face, he realized he was more upset about the car alarm that was still blaring. He noticed his mother was too.
"Holy crap, turn that damn thing off!" Dale shouted at Glenn. "I don't know how!" Glenn shouted back over the car alarm. Shane and Amy start talking at the same time, causing Tommy to look around in confusion and cringe at the loud noises around him.
His mother walked forward towards Shane side. He was about to walked forward when he noticed Carl appeared beside him. He leaned in for his hand, lean on his side. Tommy noticed that Carl felt sad. He stood by him holding his hand tightly. Carl is his little brother, no matter what they will always consider themselves as brothers.
He noticed the alarm went off, he heard the voice of Glenn. "She's okay! She's okay!" He reassured Amy. "Is she coming back?" Amy asked again. Glenn nodded, "Yes." He told her. "Are you crazy, driving this wailing bastard up here? Are you trying to draw every walker for miles?" Shane shouted at Glenn, as Lori, and his mother watched from a distance, staying away from the arguments by the car.
"I think we're okay." Dale tried to reason with him, to calm him down, knowing that Shane could get angry very easily. He had noticed that from when he had first set eyes on Shane, and he tended to stay away from the man at his best ability.
"You call being stupid okay?" Shane retorted, glaring at the older man, annoyed that he didn't see the danger here. "Well, the alarm was echoing all over these hills. Hard to pinpoint the source." Dale said again, before raising his hands up in surrender at Shane's glare, not wanting the situation to escalate any more than it already had. His mother walked forward touching his shoulder whispering something in his ear, causing Shane to calm down.
"I'm not arguing. I'm just saying." He said, before turning to Glenn, "It wouldn't hurt you to think things through a little more carefully next time, would it?" He asked the Korean boy. Glenn shrugged, feeling guilty at the older mans words, "Sorry. Got a cool car." He told Dale. Just as he said this, a larger truck came driving up the dirt road, slowly due to the weight and lack of gas. As everyone else was reuniting with their families after their long trip away, Lori walked over to him and Carl as he jump into her embrace leaning his head on her shoulder.
"Tommy, come here." He heard a voice. He nods walking over to Shane and his mom. His mother touched his forehead pulling the string of hair to the side, behind his ear. She placed her hand on his shoulder, pulling him to her comfort. He had grown since he was sixteen he should be at least 5'9 at this age.
As everyone else was reuniting with their families after their long trip away, Tommy couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness. He look towards the side spotting Lori bending down to faced Carl, saying something to him. Somebody put his arm around his shoulder, he looked up saw it was Shane. He felt a smile plastered on his face, he loved this moment between them, he truly couldn't have asked for a better father than him.
He noticed how his dad, was watching them from with saddened face. His mother appeared behind them, putting her arms around Shane. Shane smiled, placing his other arm around his mother waist. He truly smiled for the first time in long time wishing this moment could last forever. He kept looking ahead as everybody reunited with their loved ones.
When he felt his dad pulled away from him, felt his mom back away from both of them shocked, confused falling down to the ground. He turned to his dad seeing his disbelief face.
He turned to looked again, when he scrunched his eyebrows in disbelief.
He spotted the one man he thought will never see again.
