CHAPTER THREE: HOPE

HE FELT LIKE HIS HEAD WAS BURNING. He felt like he was coming down with a fever. That night he was in his tent laying down. His mother unzipped his tent making her way towards him. She placed a cold wet cloth on his forehead.

"Tommy, stay in the tent. Until tomorrow. It's just small dose of high temperature, your going to be fine, stay in here," She placed a kiss on his head and held his hand. He admits he trusted his mother when it comes to these things. His mother wasn't a nurse for no reason.

"You're going to okay, Tommy. You have a family that loves you." He nods staring at his mother, she wore black t-shirt and jeans, pair of black boots. Tommy knew he didn't feel well because of the arrival of his biological father. Rick Grimes, the man he thought was dead. The father he never knew, the father who doesn't know about him. He hated the feeling, knowing that his real father is alive.

That's until, Shane burst through the tent, walking inside. "Tommy, you alright man?" he spoke, bending down. He nods, flickering his eyes between both of his parents. "Look, Tommy there is strange and weird things going-" he was cut off by his mother. "Strange? Weird? This is the worst thing that could happen to us, Shane! Rick, his real biological father is alive!"

His mother scowl at Shane. "You told me he died? Shane, you told me this!" she sob, as tears fell down her face. Tommy couldn't understand he lean forward trying to give comfort to his mother, he put a worried face, not thinking what he can do.  Shane raised his eyebrows, "I thought he did, you gotta believe me. He is my best friend, my brother," he continued turning his eyes on him. "I love him like a brother, I did my best to protect him, in thick and thin," he finished, staring into his eyes. Shane took Marie, hand, held it. "I'm not lying."

"You're liar!" His mother shouted, taking her hand away from him. "You always been liar, Shane. Always!"

"Stop!" Tommy spoke, gently getting up to face both of them.

"He ain't a liar," he finally spoke. "I believe, Shane. Mom, he saved us when the world was ending, he did everything in his power. We're alive because of him, Mom, I'm thankful for that."

His mother frowned, trying to clean her tears with her shirt. She nods, looking at Tommy then at Shane. "I don't hate you, Shane. I hate that you lie to me so many times," she finished, she frowned slightly. Tommy knew deep inside it wasn't because Shane lied about Rick, it was because of Lori. His mother must be truly hurt because of this. Shane gulps, taking few breaths.

"Tommy, I'm your dad and I'll make sure to protect you and your mother at any cost. You guys, are my family." He finished, causing Tommy to sigh in relief. He truly felt the same way.

The next morning he woke up to find his mother slept beside him. No sign of Shane. He began his morning, yawning grabbing some water, cleaning his teeth, with a toothbrush. That's his normal routine, he quickly pull on pair of Nike shoes, wore a grey shirt and some pair of pants. He already saw everybody outside, going through their normal routine. He began to walk around camp, walking around when he saw Dale and Glenn, speaking, like they were trying to break apart the sports car.

"Generators need every drop of fuel they can get." Dale shrugged at him, as he was busy loading parts away from the car, handing it to the others. "Got no power without it. Sorry, Glenn."

Glenn sigh, Tommy approached him, grinning."Too bad, Glenn," he smiled causing Glenn to jump back, shocked.

"Woah, dude. You scared me for second." His korean friend spoke, causing Tommy to raised his eyebrows in disbelief. "Really wanted to drive your new sports car. That's of course as soon as I'm eighteen," Tommy admitted, softly.

"Eighteen?" A voice spoke up. Tommy didn't know whose voice that was, he reply back saying "yeah" Glenn continued to laugh along his lines.

"Tommy it's been a long time," a familiar voice spoke causing Tommy to turn to see the one guy, he didn't think he'll come to see this early. His biological father. His father best friend. His godfather, Rick Grimes. There he stood in front of both men, curiously staring into each other eyes.

He smirked. "Yeah, I am eighteen, in four months." Rick clear his throat, unaware of this. "The last time, I saw you you were sixteen. You grown a lot, Tommy."

Tommy raised his eyebrows, he did admit Rick looked a-lot like him. Tommy nods, not wanted to face Rick directly to his eyes. He always knew that a day like this would come. That was all gone when he supposedly thought he died in Atlanta. Does he know? Does he need to say anything to him? Although when he found out that Rick died back then, he thought this moment will never happen. He was wrong, very wrong about this situation.

"Maybe we'll get to steal another one someday." Rick spoke up clearing Tommy thoughts. He saw that he began speaking to Glenn, he watched as he patted Glenn's back in comfort, hoping to make the kid feel better.

"I would love to drive it," Tommy spoke up, widely smiling. Glenn laughs, along his lines.

"When you turn eighteen, Tommy." Rick told him, ruffling his hair, playfully. He chuckled and nudged him away. He admits he missed his humor, before he knew Rick, truly was his biological father,he always knew Rick was his lovable uncle, who brought him gifts and made jokes.

Glenn and Tommy started laughing at each other turned back to his car, when suddenly, two screams from Carl and Sophia were heard, causing Tommy to widen his eyes, widely. He began to run an instant. He recognized those voices.

"Carl? Sophia?" he screamed, as he immediately took off running towards the screams of his brother and his friend he noticed, his mom, Marie and Shane followed behind. Once they both came into view, he ran towards Carl he saw how Carl ran towards him, crying. He bend down worriedly, as he pulled for a hug. Sophia ran towards him hugging him around his right shoulder, he began to noticed a figured moving not that far away from. He slowly got up, pulling them behind him as he got closer to see what it was. That's until he was stopped by, Shane.

"Tommy, stay there."

He scrunched his eyebrows, when he saw how Rick and the rest of the men began to beat up the walker, he wanted to joined only to be stopped by his mom.
"Tommy, come here." She demanded, causing him to sighed in frustration, he walked near his mother stood in front of her, seeing how everybody reacted.  He was surprised to say the least, he hadn't seen one of them since they set up camp, they normally didn't come near their area.

He watched the walker how disgusting it was, it was completely rotted, his skin practically falling off, and he was feeding on a dead deer, he had never seen anything like it, and it terrified him.  "Well, their running out of food in the city, that's what." Jim commented, as he gripped his shovel right in his hands. This caused a shiver to go down Tommy spine, what would happen if more came? Are they safe here anymore? Did they have to leave?

He began to eye it carefully, he backed away slowly not wanted to see anymore when he bumped into somebody.

"Watch it, Tom," he looked up, immediately staring into pair of blue piercing eyes. He saw Annalisa, but she ignored him walking straight up to the walker, whom they guys were beating up. He rolls his eyes, annoyed.

He thought about Annalisa, when the months had come by staying there in the camp. Many people thought that he might have crush on her. He denied it so many times, he was only sixteen when he met eighteen year old Annalisa. Throughout the months they had first met, they had formed some kind of relationship, usually he ends up mumbling some weird words leaving her to laugh at his behavior. The one thing he knew is his mother didn't like her, so did Lori.

Lori and his mother will tell him to stay away from her, he didn't care but Shane will always encouraged him to speak to her once and while. There was noises in the bushes, he widen his eyes as his mother got closer to him, that's when Daryl came to view, his crossbow in his hands.

"Oh, Jesus." Shane muttered, lowering his weapon at the man.  "Son of a bitch!" They all heard, he saw how Annalisa immediately came out jumped in front of  Daryl.

"That's our damn deer, Annalisa!"  He yelled angrily, looking towards the deer in disgust. "This was dinner, Annalisa!"

"Stupid, filthy, disease-bearing motherless poxy bastard!" He shouted, with every insult, came another kick, and another flinch from Tommy as he was held a death grip by his mother, really not enjoying the sight in front of Daryl outburst.

"Calm down, son." Dale told Daryl, stepping a little closer to him with his hands raised. "That's not helping." He said, hoping to calm him down and de-escalate the situation. He watched as Annalisa stood by Daryl, trying to say some words to him but he ignored her.

"What do you know about it, old man?" Daryl scoffed as he looked him over, "Why don't you take that stupid hat and go back to on golden pond? I've been tracking this deer for miles." He said, pointing to the deer. "Was gonna drag it back to camp, cook us up some venison."  He kept watching them, then focus on the deers bloody neck, where the biter was previously eating into.

"Think we can cut around this chewed up part here?" He questioned, motioning around the area, imagining where he would cut around it so they could eat it. "That's disgusting," he whispered as his mother kept blocking his view.

Nobody knew how the disease was spreading, if eating something that one of the diseased had eaten into, it could be transferred and he didn't exactly want to risk that.  He could feel eyes on him when he said those words. He turn to see Annalisa eyeing him, with furrowed brows before scoffing annoyingly, "We got some squirrel, about a dozen or so. That'll have to do." He muttered, remembering how they had killed a few on his journey to finding the deer.  As Daryl and Annalisa went to walk back towards camp, the biter's head had began to move once more as the grain hadn't been destroyed, causing most of the camp residents to cringe and groan in disgust at the sight of it.

He looked once more at the deer, he found himself biting his lip, when it moved. "It's gross," he commented. Amy stood next to him. "Tell me about it, the worst," she began to walked away, he followed after, chuckling at her comment.

"Merle!" Daryl shouted from behind them as he and Annalisa finally entered the camp with their squirrels, "Get your ugly ass out here! I got us some squirrel. Let's stew 'em up!"  "Daryl just slow up a bit." Shane called, jogging up behind them. "I need to talk to you." He said,  Tommy looked around wondering where is Merle? He always made a scene, doesn't matter whose there, women, children always making some scenes, to better the center of the attention.

"Where the hell is Merle?" He asked, his mother turn to look at him. "Let's go, you don't need to see this."

He raised my eyebrows, she refused to look at him. "Where is Merle?"

He turned to see Annalisa face, it began to turn red, she purse her lips,  folded her arms, shaking.

"About what?" Daryl asked. "About Merle." Shane said hesitantly, sighing. "There was a... There was a problem in Atlanta." There was a problem. He knew it. He looked into his mother eyes in disbelief. She knew about this. "You knew!" he loudly spoke staring at her. His mother widen her eyes in disbelief. "Tommy?!" She looked, in disbelief of his outburst.

"He dead?" Daryl asked, as Daryl rubbed his hand over his buzz cut hair, unsure of what to think about the situation. He continued to looked ahead. "Anna? Did you knew about this?"

Annalisa nods, slowly. Not showing emotion, but trying to show respect for her elder brother. Tommy couldn't believed he knew that Merle shouldn't have gone with the others to Atlanta, as he knew that the group wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice him if they had the chance..

"We're not sure." Shane admitted as he rested his hands around his waistband.  Daryl looked up with anger at Shane's words, "He either is or he ain't!" He shouted at the older man.

Tommy watched as he wanted to get closer. That's when, Rick walked forward taking control of the situation, he wanted to go further and help out especially when Annalisa was being yelled by Daryl. He couldn't leave, as his mother held good grip on his right arm refusing him to go any further.

"No easy way to say this," Rick stated, holding up his hand in defence. "So I'll just say it." He said.  "Who are you?" Daryl asked defensively. "Rick Grimes." Rick told him.

"Rick Grimes." Daryl mocked nastily

"You got something you want to tell me?" He asked.  "Your brother was a danger to us all, so I handcuffed him on a roof, hooked him to a piece of metal." Rick told Daryl and Annalisa, as he sighed at his wording, knowing that he could have worded it a lot better.

"He's still there." He shrugged.

"Hold on. Let me process this." Daryl said, still keeping back and behind him as he paced back and forth in front of the whole camp, trying to process the cops words. "You're saying that you handcuffed our brother to a roof and you left him there?!" He shouted.  "Yeah." Rick nodded.

"You're kidding, right?" Annalisa scoffed, finally stepping forward.  When nobody replied to her, basically out of guilt, Daryl ended up dashing forward, only to have Rick move out of the way quickly and shove him to the ground, hard.

Daryl then began to get choke hold down by Shane, as Annalisa was held back by his uncle, Jack. He watched as she struggle to break free from his uncle embrace watching as her older brother was being tied down.

"Mom," he mumbled. He leaned forward only to be stop by his mom. "Leave it be, Tommy," she mumbled again, stopping him again.

He sat by the log beside Amy, as he stared at Dixon's siblings discussing something with Rick and his dad, Shane.

"I think there going back to find, Merle." She commented, he rolls his eyes. "That's great, it's death wish for those people who decide to go."

"I guess you're right," she whispered, sighing. Tommy nods, he got up slowly making his way to the group only to hear his uncle, Jack volunteering. He widen his eyes, noticed his mother there, begging him not to go, he ran up to them.

"Jack, you don't need to go. It's Merle, please stay here with me, and Tommy." He noticed how Jack took a moment to glance at him. "I have to go. I need to go back for Merle."

"Merle? For god sake, that man is cruel and evil, why risk your life for him?" He burst out of him, earning some glances from around them.

"Tommy, just stay here. I have to get back for him. He saved me, I own him this. This is like a payment, if I go, I'll lived in peace knowing were even now, you have to understand me, Marie," Jack flickered his eyes between both of them. "Jack, please," his mom spoke causing Jack to keep walking ahead as he held onto his mother.

He began to stand by side his mother as he watched Rick, Jack, Annalisa, Daryl, T-Dog, Glenn get on the R.V, he watched in silence noticing how Jack held his hand out to pull Annalisa onto the truck. He began to noticed how red her cheeks turn after, noticing how close they were sitting next to each other. He fist tightens he turns away but still thinking about what he just saw.

"I can't believe they are going," Shane mumbled appearing next to them. His thoughts were interrupting. "Rick lost his mind," his mother commented. "Lori and Carl must be hurt he's leaving again."

"I'm telling you, it's going to be hard getting back at dawn soon. Going to be hard," Shane shakes his head in disbelief. Tommy looked down, he wondered if this how it should have been. God, didn't want Rick to know that he is his real son. Maybe it was for the best he didn't care but admits he always had hope he would still be alive.

He still does.
