The Next One

They were resting in a forest clearing. Scylla watched the stars, thinking about the tremors. This danger that will awaken, she had a feeling she knew what it was. Who it was.

Snowflutter came beside her and sat down. "It's a peaceful night," he said.

"Yeah," Scylla said. "It is." They sat their, listening to the breathing of Moondrop and Stormpelt. "How can they save us?" Scylla asked suddenly. "They're just younglings!"

"I know," Snowflutter said calmly. "But so were many creatures in the Destruction War. They died, hoping they made a difference. And they did. So many creatures willing to sacrifice themselves, so we can have a peaceful future. Do you not remember them?" His calm black eyes stared at Scylla.

"I know they were," she said. "They died too young. I don't want that to happen again. We risked so much to take them away from their kind. We only have two of them! What about the others? Where are they?"

"You know we are heading toward one now," Snowflutter said.

"But we are going at a slow pace," Scylla said. "What if something happens by the time we get there?" She was breathing quickly, panicked.

"You are full of doubts, aren't you?" was all he said.

Scylla snapped at him. "Don't toy with me! I'm serious. All of us have a feral side, especially me." She looked up at the moon. It reflected in her eyes. Her heads became just one.

Snowflutter was startled, but amazed. "How did you do that?"

She looked down at him, with all of her heads. "What do you mean?"

"Didn't you not notice?" Snowflutter snorted. "Your six heads became one."

Scylla looked back up at the moon. "I guess that means that we have a chance."

"Why would it mean that?" he asked, his tail flicking. His black eyes projected a calm nature.

"My six heads are a remnant of the past. Since I haven't been out in a while, they turned into one, not needing all six. Now that I have all six back, it means danger could come. Usually when I think danger is near." Her six heads drooped. The fifth head from Snowflutter had a tear falling off its snout.

Stars winked at them from the sky. "The sky seems vibrant tonight," Snowflutter commented, trying to keep Scylla from her worries.

"Don't even bother, Snowflutter," Scylla said. "I'm always going to worry." She strained to listen for any strange sounds. The only noises were squirrels rustling in the trees, birds settling in nests, and animals running in the underbrush.

"I can at least try," he said. "Life doesn't always have to be depressing." He sneezed. Snow white wings rustled.

"Right now it is. A darkness that hasn't been seen since the Destruction War is possibly rising. We have two possible creatures who could destroy the world. We don't even have all of them." She growled in frustration. Her teeth gleamed in the moonlight.

"We will have them all soon," Snowflutter said. He got up and walked back to fire, which was now embers.

Scylla followed. She curled up to sleep, worrying what the future might hold.

The group was on their way to their next creature. Scylla walked briskly, trying to get there quickly. Snowflutter flew in the sky, looking ahead and behind for any danger. Stormpelt galloped beside Scylla. Moondrop ran beside them, not losing speed.

Stormpelt thought to ask Moondrop what she has been wondering for a couple of days.

"Moondrop," she said. "How can you walk in the day? Aren't you a Vampire?" She noticed his eyes squinting again. He still wasn't used to the day.

"I have no clue," he replied. "I didn't know until I woke up with the sun glaring down on me after the first night with them." He indicated to Scylla and Snowflutter.

Stormpelt huffed in frustration. She hated mysteries.

"Don't worry Stormpelt," Scylla said. "He is an Upir." Her one stride matched five of Stormpelt's running strides.

"A what?" Moondrop asked. He was as confused as Stormpelt.

Scylla rolled her eyes. "You younglings have never heard of an Upir?"

They shook their heads. "Oh good grief. The Vampires have lost some history then." Scylla shook her head in disgust. "An Upir is a Vampire that can walk in the day. Your kingdom is basically Upirs now."

"Okay," Stormpelt said. "That answers that. And also, how do you only have four legs, Scylla? Didn't legend say you had twelve?"

Scylla smiled. "Yes, I did. But times had changed. I had to learn how to walk without so many legs. It gets in the way. So I evolved. Just how the Dinosaurs tried to."

"Dinosaurs?" Snowflutter and Moondrop asked.

Snowflutter whinnied. He glided down and started running alongside them. "You younglings don't know your history. Dinosaurs were like giant reptiles. They were creatures that lived with Dragons at the beginning of time. They went extinct when the weather changed drastically. Dragons are adaptive creatures. No wonder we need one."

"Are you saying Centaurs aren't?" Stormpelt asked, offended. She glared at Snowflutter.

"I didn't say that," he replied. "All I said that Dragons are more adaptive than any other creature." Snowflutter flew back up to the sky.

Scylla growled. "No wonder creatures today need someone to save them."

"You guys are very offensive," Moondrop said. He stumbled over a small bush, but regained his balance.

"We are only saying the truth," Scylla said. "Creatures today don't know their history. History helps us to not repeat our past mistakes." Her heads perked up when a glowing landscape appeared ahead.

"Phoenix Territory?" Moondrop said. "We're going to Phoenix Territory?"

Scylla nodded. "The next one we need is a Phoenix. Flamebeak believes he has him."

They arrived near the glowing mountain in an hour. It towered over and was glowing strangely.

"How is it glowing?" Stormpelt asked, gripping her bow and arrow.

"The Phoenix's aura has affected it," Moondrop said, staring at the dormant volcano in awe.

"Aura?" Stormpelt asked, not taking her eyes off of the mountain.

"Do you know anything?" Moondrop asked, not taking his eyes off it either.

"Yes," she snapped. "I just don't know much. I pretty much just know how to survive."

Scylla rolled her eyes. "The mountain is nothing," she said.

They heard wingbeats. Moondrop and Stormpelt snapped out of their trance.

They hid in the trees. Two Dragons, a Nereid, and a Griffin landed in the clearing just seconds after.

"Where are we?" the green Dragon asked.

"You are in Phoenix Territory," Scylla said, walking out of the trees.

"And may I ask who you are?"
