8 - FAILURE

You leaned on the railing of your balcony as you looked out at Tokyo. It was nighttime. It honestly reminded you of the day Toji asked to marry you.

You still couldn't believe it but you still had the ring on. It was still wrapped around your finger.

But as the days get longer from you ever seeing Toji again, you started to forget what his arms around you felt like, the angle his cheek bones were carved at, the depth of the scar on his lip that you would kiss, the texture of his black hair. Was it even black? Maybe it was brown a little? Which side of his lips was the scar at? You weren't exactly sure.

You went to your pocket and opened up the cigarette packet you bought earlier that day. You took one out and brought the lighter to it. Until you remembered a faint memory from years ago.

You sat in the kitchen smoking a cigarette. You were exhausted and tired from work. It drained you like hell as while taking care of a kid.

You found pleasure and relaxation from smoking even though it wasn't healthy.

"...mom?" a voice said. You turned to see little Megumi frowning. "What are you doing?"

You stared at him for a little bit before saying, "Smoking." You then brought the cigarette back to your lips. Before you could take another wiff, Megumi snatched it, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it.

"Mom! You can't do that. You'll get sick and die." Megumi said.

That's when you really looked at his face. It was scared and hurt. You frowned and pulled him into a hug.

"I'm sorry." you whispered. That's when you felt all emotions and frustration take over and you start to sob. "I'm so sorry."

Megumi just let you cry and hugged you back.

You remembered how Megumi never liked you smoking.

It's just one. It can't be that bad-

Before you were about to light it up you heard the front door open and slam closed. You quickly put away your light and threw the cigarettes out the balcony as you headed inside.

"Megumi?!" you called out.

You went to the living room and no one was there. That's when you heard the door to Megumi's room in the hallway shut close.

You knew that whenever Megumi was feeling angry or frustrated, he slammed the door hard. You made your way over to his door and opened it to reveal Megumi in a grey t-shirt and black sweatpants as he laid on his side, facing away from you, in his bed.

You quietly stepped into the room and closed the door and sat down in the side of the bed.

You rubbed Megumi's arm to let him know your there for him. Usually you did this until he talked instead of saying "ArE yOu OkAy?" or "TeLl Me So I cAn HeLp YoU."

And it always works.

"Itadori died today." Megumi confessed. "And I couldn't do anything." Your heart swelled (in a bad way) up as you knew they were such good friends. "I'm a failure, mama."

When Megumi used 'mama' it meant he wasn't feeling well at all and needed you the most.

"Sometimes things happen because they need to." you said.

"Yeah, but you said I can form my own destiny, right? Like how you always say." Megumi said.

"That's true. But there are stuff that we can't control sometimes. Like people becoming evil, natural disasters..." you paused for a moment. "...partners leaving you."

Megumi knew exactly what you meant at the last part.

"You're not a failure because you failed, you're failure because you decided you were." you said and that's when Megumi stopped laying on his side and laid upwards facing you. "You called yourself a failure. Therefore, your destiny is for you to be a failure. But if you decide that you want to be stronger, that will be your destiny."

You smiled as Megumi didn't say anymore and you leaned in and gave him a kiss on the forehead. "Goodnight, Megumi." you said as you got up.

"Goodnight." he said as you closed the door.
