Chapter 41

"Who is it?" I asked. I looked at Emily for an answer. She was standing in the kitchen, having frozen when she heard the whistle. I could just see her tense figure as the back door slid open gently.

"It's Jake," Sam's strong voice answered. I couldn't quite see him, but I knew his half clothed body would be tense with worry.

"What happened?" Alex asked, feeling it moreso than the rest of us. He is Embry's imprint and Embry is best friends with Jake.

"He imprinted on that monster," Paul snarled. He was standing behind Sam, but I still sighed with relief that he was okay.

The two moved closer so that I could see them. Well, I could see Sam and a portion of Paul's body. It was weird that he was hiding from me like this. Usually he'd run right to me and crawl into bed with me.

"What monster?" I asked.

"Bella and Edward's half blood child thing. It's going to destroy the whole town of Forks within days and there's nothing we can do about it," Sam snapped.

"Sorry I asked," I said, deeply hurt by his harshness towards me. Sam always told me I was like the sister he never got, so it hurt to see him mad at me like this.

"I'm not mad at you, Destiny," Sam said, his voice softening as he spoke. It was almost as if he could read my mind.

"I know. You're stressed. Between the pack, the demon child, the imprints, it's a lot. I get it," I said, trying to shrug it off.

"I'm sorry for snapping at you. You didn't do anything wrong," he said.

"Apology accepted, Samuel," I said. He hated that I called him that because his given name was just Sam.

"Still isn't my name, Dest," he said. Contrary to his words, a smile, so big I could see it, spread across his face.

"Paul, you're gonna have to face her," Emily said quietly. I still heard her.

"Paul," I said. "What's she talking about?"

He walked into the living room, and I finally saw his face. He had a silver looking bite mark scar above his eye. The silver stood out, almost shining against his russet skin.

"Babe, what happened?" I asked.

"That stupid fucking leech sunk his teeth into me," Paul said, still angry with whichever one it was.

"Who was it?" I asked.

"Edward," he spat the name. I grabbed Paul's hand and pressed my lips to it gently to try and get him to calm down.

"Are you going to be okay?" I asked. I could hardly see as my eyes brimmed with tears. I knew within a matter of seconds my cheeks would be drenched.

"Vampire venom is supposed to kill our kind," he said gently. He sat down and pulled me into his chest.

My body gave in and started sobbing into his chest, weeks of bottled up emotion spilling out through my eyes.

"Shh, Destiny, hon, I'm fine. I haven't died yet, so we don't think I will. Billy and Old Quil are almost certain I will be okay," he said, attempting to calm me down.

"I can't lose you Paul. I'd probably die or something," I said. I kissed the exposed skin of his chest as he held me.

"I know baby girl. I love you," he said, kissing the top of my head.

"I love you too Paul," I said. He stayed there, holding me until I finally fell asleep.
