Chapter 25

“Destiny,” Emily said softly.

“Leave me alone,” I said, pulling my pillow closer to my chest.

It felt like someone had punched a hole straight through where my heart should be. That someone just so happens to be Paul. It was seriously killing me that we had gotten into a fight and that he actually listened to me when I told him to leave me alone.

“You can't lay here and wallow in self pity forever,” she said.

“I can too. If I don't die of starvation first, the cancer will kill me,” I said.

“Well, dinner is done if you want to come eat,” she said, standing up and heading downstairs. I heard her and Sam speaking to each other at the bottom of the stairs in hushed voices. I couldn't make out what they were saying so I curled up and tried to sleep.

“Rose,” Xander said, appearing in my doorway.

“Xander, it hurts, so bad,” I said, sobbing harder.

My twin brother joined me on the bed and tried to draw my attention away from the aching hole in my chest.

“It's the imprint bond,” he said. “Remember how much it hurt to just be away from him physically? Well, now imagine being away from him mentally and emotionally too.”

“Not helping,” I said, curling in on myself as the pain in my chest got worse.

“Well, I know it's not what you wanna hear, but Paul will come to his senses,” Xander said.

“I'm not so sure. You didn't hear what we were saying,” I said.

“Yeah, we did. The whole reservation did,” he said. “When you feel like it, there's ice cream in the freezer.” He stood up and left, so I curled up on my bed, pulling my pillow into my chest.

Of course, my pillow still smelled like Paul, which only made it worse. I chucked it across the room and it landed in the hallway with a soft thud. I went to pull my sleeves over my hands when I realized I was still dressed in Paul's hoodie. I ripped it off my body and threw it into the hallway too. I shivered as the cold air hit my stomach. I stood up and grabbed my crutches, making my way to my closet. I grabbed the rest of Paul's hoodies and shorts that we're sitting in there and dumped them in the hallway.

I shut the door so I didn't have to see them and went back to my bed. I pulled the blankets over my freezing body and started crying again.

“Destiny,” Sam's strong voice came from the other side of my bedroom door.

“Leave me alone,” I said.

“We need to talk,” he said.

“Fine, it's open,” I said. He pushed the door open and stepped into my room before shutting it behind him.

“Last resort much,” I muttered, but knew he'd hear me.

“You know, Paul's hurting just as much as you are,” he said.

“I don't care. He was an ass to me,” I said. “Even if I was a bitch.”

“He wasn't an ass to you. Kyle was an ass. Paul's got a temper, and he is worried about you,” Sam said sitting down on my bed.

“I know Kyle was an ass, but I honestly thought Paul was different. Kyle used to tell me I was an attention whore who wanted everyone to feel bad for me because I had cancer,” I said, sobbing again.

“Shh,” Sam said, wrapping his arm across my shoulder.

“You need to talk to Paul,” Sam said.

“No,” I refused.

“It's not gonna get better if you don't talk to him,” Sam said.

“Fine, but I won't do it happily,” I said.

“You'll feel better,” Sam said.

“I really don't want to believe you,” I said.

“Whatever. I'm going to go get Paul and tell him to come talk to you,” Sam said, standing up.

“Hey, will you get me a sweatshirt?” I asked. He opened the door and threw one of Paul's at me before shutting the door and leaving me alone with the aching feeling in my chest.

I pulled the soft material of the brown hoodie on over my black Nike sports bra and curled up on my bed to wait for Paul.
