Chapter 12
The drive to Seattle was dead silent. I’d never been more concerned for someone, except maybe Alex, ever. I don’t remember the last time I’d felt this much dread. Even when I lost my parents, I somehow knew what had been going on and that now that they’re gone, we’ve been relieved from some danger.
“Hey, Tay,” Bobby’s voice broke as he left yet another voicemail. “When you get this call me back, please. I’m worried beyond belief. Please just call me. I love you, babe.”
“Bobby, stop torturing yourself,” Paul spoke softly. I glared at him quickly before realizing he was probably right.
“I’m just really scared,” Bobby’s voice was smaller than I’d ever heard it before.
“I know, Bobby. We’re going to do everything in our power to find him,” I reassured Bobby. He nodded and went back to staring out the window.
Twenty minutes later, Paul pulled into downtown Seattle. Almost immediately, his phone started to ring.
“Answer it please,” he said. I noticed Sam's name across the screen and became nervous.
“Hello,” I said, trying desperately to hide my fear that Sam was going to yell at me.
“Where are you two?” Sam’s angry voice came through the phone. I knew he'd be upset but I wasn't expecting actual anger.
“Seattle,” I said shyly. Paul immediately ripped the phone from my hand. I squeaked and jumped away from his. His anger scared me,so he tried to stay as calm as possible around me.
I heard him yelling at Sam about how we could go wherever we please, even though we both know that isn’t true. We are not allowed anywhere Sam doesn’t approve of, but most times it’s easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.
“Sam, we’ll be back when we find Taylor,” Paul snapped and hung up the phone.
My phone signaled a new text, so I opened my phone, becoming increasingly nervous as the text didn’t load yet again.
When it finally did, it read We’ll all be there ASAP. It was from none other than Sam.
“What was that?” Paul asked, grabbing my hand, gently. I jumped at the sudden contact before relaxing.
“Oh, uh, Sam is bringing the guys down. They're gonna help us find Taylor,” I said, glancing over my shoulder to see the small smile forming on Bobby's face.
“Well, in the meantime we can start handing out these flyers,” Paul said.
“We should start in Portidge Bay,” Bobby said. “That's where Stella, his sister, lives.”
“Just point me in the right direction,” Paul said, and started driving in the direction Bobby gave him.
We stood around the neighborhood for a few hours before a series of beat up old pickups pulled up on the road. I rolled my eyes at the boys as they piled out of the car.
“Calm down and actually help,” I said, smiling at my baby cousin.
“I'm trying,” Seth said. “I'm just a little hyperactive.”
“Here's some flyers. Get to work,” I said. A group took off to post the flyers around the neighborhood.
We stood around for a few more hours, handing out the flyers and just hoping and praying for the best outcome.
“Hey,” I said, walking over to Bobby.
“Hi,” he said. He seemed lost in thoughts. I could tell his mind was elsewhere, and felt bad for him.
“We're gonna find him,” I said, reassuringly. Almost as if on cue, Paul's voice called for us.
“Destiny, Bobby,” he said. We both spun around and Bobby took off. Taylor was standing there, looking like hell, but alive.
“Where the hell have you been?” Bobby asked.
“I'm here. I've been trying to get ahold of you,” Taylor answered.
“Don't ever do that to me again,” Bobby said. He collapsed into Taylor's arms and started sobbing. I walked over to Paul and wrapped my arms around his waist, breathing in his scent.
“We're going to head home. Quil and Embry have been patrolling for like five or six hours,” Sam said.
“We'll be there soon,” Paul said.
I heard Sam round up the boys and pile them all into the trucks they'd ridden in to get here. They were all complaining until Sam reminded them that Em would have food waiting for them.
“Hey, Taylor. It's nice to see you again,” I said, waving to him.
“It's nice to see you again too Destiny,” he said. “Why don't we head home? I mean, I'm exhausted.”
“How do you think I feel?” Bobby asked. I rolled my eyes at the boys as we started making our way back to Paul's truck. Luckily the truck had four seats, so we had enough space to get everyone home.
“What happened?” Bobby asked Taylor as Paul drove us home.
“Um, well, my car was stolen two days ago. My cell phone, wallet, everything was in it. I reported it to the police and the found it a few blocks down. I, uh, well, my sister and I had gotten into a huge fight and she refused to help me so I've been sleeping in the streets waiting for them to find my stuff,” he said. I stopped listening and let the couple have their reunion.
