Chapter 7
Ignacio and Royce's story
Their story was not very different from Amber and Jade's story. They were both on the same ship and when it started sinking they settled in a smaller boat with a few other people. Unfortunately, the waves managed to throw them out of the boat. But luckily for them, they found a piece of a broken boat which was large enough for both of them to stay on. There was also rope tied to the board, so they tied themselves up to the board so as not to be thrown off the by the strong waves. They had no provisions, but they managed to reach the island before starving or dying of thirst. The reason for that was the fact that they were caught in a strong current that brought them straight to the island. When Amber heard that she was very grateful for their small life-raft since she wasn't sure that the two of them would have survived otherwise. When Ignacio and Royce reached the island they were so tired that they immediately fell asleep although they were very hungry. Ignacio was woken up by the sound he couldn't recognize as sleepy as he was. It sounded to him as if someone was swimming through the water. It turned out it wasn't a person swimming but something else. What he saw was something he had never seen before and never thought would see a mermaid. She had long blond hair, and she was covered in gold scales which sparkled in the sun. It was a magnificent sight to see. She had something in her hand that looked like a coconut and in the other; she was holding a strange container which seemed to be filled with water.
He thought that he was going crazy since he is a rational human being he didn't believe in mermaids or magic for that matter. He started calling Royce to check if he could see the same thing, to make sure he wasn't going crazy." Royce, wake up, man! I think I am going nuts! Tell me if you see what I am seeing. "Royce half opened his eyes and said grudgingly: "Yes, I see a mermaid. Now let me go back to sleep! I am so tired. The moment he said that he jumped up suddenly completely awake. He could also see the mermaid. There were actually two of them, and they were both carrying food and water. As soon as they realized that the humans were awake the mermaids left the offerings on the beach and quickly disappeared as if they were never there. The only way the guys knew they were not dreaming was the presence of food and water that the mermaids left behind. They didn't see them again but kept finding food and water on the beach three times a day. It seemed as if these precious things appeared out of nowhere, but they knew the mermaids brought them there. This continued for a few days since they weren't sure what to do next.
Ignacio suggested staying close to the beach and waiting for some ship to come. As for Royce, he was more in favor of looking for the inhabitants of the island, well not inhabitants the way people usually thought of them but the magical beings living on the island. He was sure that the island was filled with magical beings, not humans. That was where the second reason for their argument lay. Namely, Ignacio claimed that the mermaids were just a hallucination caused by extreme thirst and hunger. But Royce was smart enough to believe his own eyes, besides he said food and water were proofs but Ignacio assumed it was left there by the shy inhabitants of the island. Since Royce was a dreamer it was easier for him to grasp the concept of mermaids. So, finally, after a few days, they settled their first argument by deciding to explore the island a bit more and look for the inhabitants whoever or whatever they might be. When the girls saw them they were having their second argument, the one about the mermaids. "And that is our story" concluded Ignacio. The girls who were very quiet until that moment, listening to the story started coming back to reality. "That is what I saw!" exclaimed Amber. "I thought there was something strange about the glimmer I saw earlier. Now I see that it was the end of a mermaid's tail!" Her statement caused instant silence. Ignacio didn't want to contradict her having just met her; he didn't want to be rude. Jade and Royce couldn't speak stunned as they were by what was said. Jade was incredulous but Royce was just content someone else saw the same thing and didn't try to deny it. To change the subject Ignacio asked the girls to tell their story which broke an awkward silence which fell upon them. Amber started telling them their story with too many details which Jade didn't like, but she let her be. The guys didn't mind since for the last few days they only had each other for company, and they mostly argued.
