Part 5 Of 5
(Final Chapter)
*******
She kept walking on the clean floor, that furnished in wood. Lights were lighting up the place, cleared to her vision. Her eyes were searching for someone to confirm her doubts. However, not a single person was there to be found, while her wondering eyes didn't stop observing the place. The walls were glass made in a particular spot. Her feet moved her there. In the reflection she observed herself.
Her eyebrows crocked; mind got confused. In a white hospital gown, she was standing in front of it. Her slightly wavy, shoulder length hair was hanging loosely on her back. It was coffee brown, not her usual black. Her mind was formulating theories; out of the blue a sound caught her attention, breaking train of thoughts.
She moved her head, focusing on the sound. It wasn't far, coming from a particular room. With curiosity and anticipation of getting her answers, she began to walk again. With every step the sound was getting clearer. Her ears were on it, calculating any possible danger.
HIC. HIC.
A raspy sound.
HIC. HIC.
A sound of sniffing and...
Sobbing?
Is someone crying?
Her steps got fasten; heart was racing. With a confused face, she came near the door and peeked into it. Flowers were placing around a photo; candles were organised accordingly. In front of it, a man in black outfits was crying his eyes out.
Her heart began to ache for an unknown reason; breathe was shortened. Slowly, with baby steps, her feet were heading towards him. Coming near him, her eyes fell on the photo for the first time. At that moment, she head started spinning.
A girl was smiling beautifully in that photo. Bright eyes, with white dress, her coffee brown hair was loosely falling on her upper arms. The exact reflection that she saw in the glass wall. It was her. For some weird reason she also knew, how fake that smile was in the photo.
She was dumbfounded and numb. Yet her feet moved before him. A familiar face she saw everyday lately. His eyes were red shot; tears were falling uncontrollably. The pain of losing a loved one was intact in his sharp, dark brown eyes.
She couldn't handle herself; fell on the ground; crawled near him. Tears started to form into her eyes as well. His grief-stricken sobs were breaking her heart.
"Don't cry..." Her voice wasn't reaching out him.
"Don't cry... hum.." Her both hands were moving their own, weeping the falling tears from his eyes.
"Haah..aah.." His sobs were painful to hear.
"Please don't cry..." She couldn't able to control the pain inside her chest.
"Sorry... I'm sorry..." She was pleading, apologising for an unknown reason.
"I'm sorry..." He wasn't able to hear her.
"Please don't cry...."
"Please..."
Please...
°***°
She got up from her laying position, after opening her eyes with a jerk. The pillow was wet; blanket was about to fall from the bed. Weeping her tears slowly, she got up from the bed and came near the window. With a move, she shifted the curtains away. Sun was shining brightly over the clear sky; birds were flying; people could be seen from the glass. Sunrays hit her face while she was observing the surroundings, thinking about it.
It was a strange dream, a very strange one. She wasn't able to express the emotions she was feeling at that moment. Painful, confusing, stressful and heartbreaking, that's all she could interpret. However, that wasn't the strange part. It wasn't new for her to cry in a dream, waking up while having emotional outburst. She was used to it more than any other normal human would.
Being in the rehab for more than 5 years, prepared her to deal with it. Moreover, she got dreams of her in that self time to time, since her pre-puberty. The strange part of the dream was seeing that person in it. It never happened before. With his blueish green-grey hair, it wasn't hard to recognise the man in black. It would be a lie if she had said that she didn't think about their first meeting at all. It still confused her, why he was there at that moment.
But, why would I dream about him?
On the top of that, why was she crying for him, feeling pain for him and begging him to stop crying? It had never happened before.
After that incident, his calling her 'Tak Dong-kyoug', she was avoiding him and observing him more from afar. These days her thoughts were occupied by him. Her calmness was getting affected. How did he know that name?
"He is getting into my nerves." Her jaw tightened.
Who are you, actually?
********
She was avoiding him since that day, yet observing his every movement. He knew it pretty well and playing along with it. That day caused a huge impact on her for him. It was clear to him. The thing he didn't know yet was why. He was a divine entity; possessed the power of hearing thoughts of any living beings. However, there was always a restriction in using anything. He could only hear or see thoughts when the person before him was thinking about it in his/her mind. Otherwise, it wasn't possible for him to decode their past history.
It was also applied to Mi-so. He didn't discover about the reason till now. Whenever she faced him, her thoughts were always the flashbacks of that incident, nothing else. Nevertheless to say, there was no progress in knowing her.
With a sigh, he entered into the department. It was like any other ordinary working day. Employees were discussing about the cases. While his team members were writing the reports of the recent ones. Mi-so wasn't there yet. After completing her night shift, she was getting freshen up. She must be at the canteen right now. He didn't want to be too obvious; he didn't follow her there.
The head of the department was busy with a person in his office. The cafeteria boy took snacks on a tray before heading to the cabin. Holding a case file, he sat on his respective chair. Opening it, he was observing the photos from the crime scene. It was a potential serial killer case. They suspected her for a long time, but not getting enough evidence against her. However, she came here and surrender herself to the police on one morning of last week. It was Mi-so's case. She was shocked and confused at first. He was watching her expressions with amusement. Well, at least he could use his power for reducing her workload. Couldn't he?
He smirked while remembering that day. He could do any possible things for her to keep her safe. As a team leader, he didn't have to do much rather look over them, during case studies. Most of the time he always knew the culprit prior to their knowledge. He just played along with them to stay close to the love of his existence. Though she was completely unaware it. It didn't let him to stop loving her dearly.
Do Ae-ri, her closest colleague was working on computer while sipping from her coffee mug. It was the moment when the door opened and Mi-so entered. She was about to reach her seat, a colleague of her stopped her.
"Head is asking for you in his cabin." He informed before she nodded her head while heading towards the office doorknob.
He was observing them. Like any other day, it wasn't something unusual. They discussed case related details that he would know, in no time.
"Mr. Kang is busy today. Right?" One of them while reading a file.
"I heard so." The person answered him while doing her computer work.
He focused on other recent files which were under Mi-so's assignment. He needed to help her out before the time of their final investigation. It didn't pass 10 minutes, Mi-so came out from head's room with angry face and left the place hurriedly. Ae-ri noticed it, before her eyes caught the person who came out after Mi-so. Her eyes widened; heartbeat fasten. One after another images were flashing before her eyes. Worryingly, knowing the situation she ran after Mi-so, leaving him with his dumbfounded, shocked eyes.
So, this is why...
********
She headed to the his office after getting the call. Usually he did it, whenever he needed to assign her something high profile case. Entering the room, she found her head of the department talking to a woman in white, long, elegant coat. Her hair was shoulder length, black. Sensing her presence she turned towards her, facing directly.
Her breath caught in her throat; hands were sweating. Years of practice helped her to hold her calmness on face. Noticing her, the head gave her a smile.
"Ah, Mi-so. Meet Mrs. Lee, President of L.M. group. Mrs. Lee meet Park Mi-so the youngest officer of our department. I hope that you can discuss your problem with her. I'm leaving both of you in privacy." Bowing his head he left the room.
The room fell into grave silence. None of them were making any noise. The older woman was thinking how to talk; whereas, younger one was preparing herself to leave.
"Long time no see." She voice was soft and polite; however it didn't affect her poker face.
"Have a seat. We have many things to discuss. You have got so thin these days. Aren't you.." She had been interrupted.
"How did you find me?" Her cold voice shook that lady's core.
"Let's have a lunch together. I can.."
"How did you find me?" Her voice hardened.
The room fell into a silence again. Her eyes were still into hers. With a shattering voice the woman replied.
"My people found you."
"So, you hired people to spy on me. Old habits die hard, I see." She let out a laugh of jeering.
"The thing is.."
"What do you want?" Her voice was direct and cold.
"Nothing just wanted to see you. Eat with you..." She was trying hard to reach her.
"You saw me. Now go." She turned her body to leave the room.
"Lee Dong-kyoug!" Her words stopped her on mid way; her fists curled up tightly; she hold her breath to control anger.
She turned her face to her again.
"Park Mi-so. Lee Dong-kyoug died 7 years ago." Without wasting any moment she left the room.
She needed fresh air right away.
°°°°°°°°°°°
Her body was covered in a blanket. Silence of the room was intensifying darkness of the night. She was looking at the window. No moon, clouds or trace of light. A power cut happened 15 minutes ago. She had that nightmare again. The memories of her bad childhood resurfacing into her mind. Morning incident triggered some of her darkest phases of life. Even Ae-ri's consolation didn't work this time. These nightmares were not new to her. She had those once in awhile. However, today's incident was making hard for her to control those terror coming inside her head.
L.M. group, one of the richest business industries in South Korea. They had chain of hotels, film agency, hospitals and schools. People looked for their fashion products; models and film makers took appointments to be featured in their products. Currently, the step-son of the owner was handling the business. If only everything was normal, she would have been the in charge of their business, as the one and only real owner of the group, Lee Dong-kyoug.
It all started, when she was only 10 years old. Her mother was fighting with a illness and her father was busy doing sex with his secretary. One year passed her mother died. Within 3 months, her father married that secretary. She had a son of her age. It created a huge turmoil inside her mind. Slowly, silently the existence of her mother wiped off from their lives. She couldn't take it. Her mental health began to distort. At the age of 15, she began to smoke, drink even took drugs. She wanted to end her life. She couldn't see her mother's sacred palace turning into a cursed castle. Her father had nothing. Her mother was the daughter of L.M. group. However, he began to pursue her grandparents for writing up everything on his name. The changing nature of her father planted hatred in her. She was about to finish her life completely until Ae-ri, her childhood best friend found out about her condition. She motivated her; let her understood a fact that in order to take avenge she had to prepare herself for situations. It moved her deeply; after years of facing neglect someone was caring for her. For some unknown reason, she believed her even after having trust issues. She never regretted it till now. They studied hard; joined police academy. Gradually they both established themselves in their lives. After leaving rehab she changed her name; wiped out every trace of her old identity; left her hometown and came Seoul. Ae-ri's friends helped her in it.
Mi-so meant smile. Her mother wanted to name her on her beautiful smile. But, it didn't go as planned that time. Fate named her Dong-kyoug.
She looked at her room. Their apartment was near her office. Ae-ri and she shared it together. It was 11 o'clock of night. Ae-ri was sleeping in her room. Her eyes were roaming in the dark; mind was full of thoughts.
Have you ever feel empty inside? Have you ever felt that the world you are living in sudden crumpling down? The fully painted, colourful walls are turning into pitch black. The hollowness in you in growing rapidly; numbness, a feeling of nothingness, a loop of abyss slowly spreading your head. Things you used to love begin to fade away from your heart. Slowly, you stop moving and stand at the same place for ages. You begin to fade away. Gradually, you are turning into something so non-existential, a living corpse. I have become a being, who is walking, eating, sleeping, existing, but never alive. I have become a hollow, empty cane, no willingness to live and dead inside.
I have dedicated my whole life to take revenge from them. After accomplishing my goal, I don't want to live. I'll embrace death with my open arms. Until then, I need to live. I need to exist.
She moved her face to the window. Stars were shining, a shooting star crossed the sky.
°°°°°°°°°°°°°
"YAAA!" Her scream echoed the alley.
The culprit was running away faster than he could. Her teammates had already surrounded him from every side. Mr. Kim was running behind her. She was well aware of the position they were heading.
He was about to cross the road she jumped on him; grabbed his gun and folded his both hands on his back. With a quick move, she arrested him. She was lucky that her teammates controlled the bus which was about to hit them both. Within a moment, the traffic was in control and they pulled him into police van.
Letting out a sigh, she came near her teammates. Ae-ri was giving her a dead glance. Others were scared for her life. She could have died that moment.
"I'm heading to home. See you tomorrow." She left them without any further explanation.
Her mind was occupied with thoughts that she wanted to avoid for days. It was affecting in her workplace as well. She was standing there at the road crossing. Signal was red. It was evening 7. Everyone was coming home after a long day.
"You could have died! Do you know that?" A sudden male voice brought her back to the real world.
She turned her face to the source of it. Mr. Kim was standing just beside her wearing angry and fearful expression on his face. Her eyebrows crocked in confusion.
"Do you know how dangerous it can be?" His voice raised again.
"So?" She lifted her one eyebrow.
"So?" His eyes got confused; it was something he didn't expect.
"Yes so what?" Her voice hardened.
It was starting to piss her off. She gave it more thoughts. In the end, she had come with only one conclusion. Her dear material aunt hired him. He must be a spy of her. Only then it was making sense. How could a person, whom she had no relation with, care about her livings? Since the day one his attitude towards her had been different. He was having alternative motive against her. There was no way he would know that name. Lee Dong-kyoug was justifiable. However, Tak Dong-kyoug wasn't. The name had a history; only two people knew about it till now. Her aunt and her grandmother.
"Don't you care about you own life?" His voice came back after awhile.
"Do you think, I would have taken this job, if I had?" She smirked coldly.
Her answer made him dumbfounded. His eyes were inspecting her.
"Don't pretend like you are on my side." She cold voice shook him.
"I wasn't preten..."
"Drop your act of caring. It's getting boring now." With a jeering smile she began to cross the road, leaving a numbed entity behind; he couldn't able to utter a single word further.
°°°°°°°°°°°°
Tak Dong-kyoug, a name that was a comfort tone and painful music to her heart. It sounded to dear to her, yet whenever she heard it, her mind filled with melancholy. It all started when she was in her kindergarten playschool, 1 year old. They were being trained to write their own names. She, out of everyone, learned it first. However, rather than writing her given name, she wrote a complete different one.
Tak Dong-kyoug.
Then the rest was history. Her younger self refused to believe that it wasn't her name. In order to stop her crying, they decided to change it from previous one to Dong-kyoug. Though surname couldn't be changed. She heard it from her grandmother, when she was in 5th standard. She had to believe her, as even till now if she hadn't paid attention while writing her name, she would subconsciously write it to Tak Dong-kyoug.
A person completely unknown to her, in his late 20's could never aware about it. Unless he was given the information.
After reaching her home, she was thinking about it thoroughly. Out of the blue, her phone rang, an unknown number. She took it without hesitation, it wasn't unusual in her field.
"Hello!" She responded.
"Long time no see sister. I see, you are doing pretty well." A chill went though her body.
Her step-brother. He found her; finally he caught her. The fear she was having these years finally came true.
"What do you want?" Her voice turned rough.
"You already know what I want." His reply made her gritting her teeth.
"What if I don't want to?" She played along.
"Do Ae-ri wouldn't able see Sunrise next day." Her blood went cold.
Ae-ri, the only person she cared about. She was in the kitchen right now.
"What do I have to do?" Her helplessness was coming back from the past.
"I'm sending an address. Come here before Sunrise." He cut the call; within a minute a message popped up on her phone's screen.
°***°
She was waiting in front of a building, an abandoned one. She knew it. It wasn't something unknown. She prepared her gun with extra bullets. Roaming her eyes here and there, she was standing on the place, observing it. If she weren't wrong, he wouldn't be alone and his wouldn't welcome her with chocolate.
Within a few minutes she heard the sounds of footstep. Before she could move, someone pressed a cloth on her mouth forcefully; after that everything went black.
°***°
Her eyes opened with a splash of water. After getting her conciousness back, she found herself tieing with a chair. Her hair was wet, dress full of dirt. Lights were coming from the open side of the building. There was no wall as guard.
"Nice to meet you, sister." A man in his mid 20's flashed a toothy smile at her; he was sitting in a chair in front of her.
"Yaa!" She screamed.
"I gave it a thought. Why I would ask you to sign the papers, rather I could kill you instead. Then it will be automatically in my name." His raspy voice ignited the rage inside her.
"YAAA! YOU BUSTARD!" Her frustration broke.
"It was nice meeting you, sister! Have a painful death." He signalled his members; she was using her whole body to break through it.
He walked out the place. His gang member let out a knife from his pocket. Before she could react, it went though her belly.
"AH!" Blood spilled out from her body; pain shot through her nerves.
"Such a waste of beauty!" One of their voices came into her ears.
Her vision was getting blurry. Fog began to build. Every muscle of her body was losing it's strength. She was losing consciousness. Her pain was getting worse. Blood coming out with it.
No...
Her eyes wasn't able to hold.
No...
Her body was getting heavier.
Not now please...not before I can achieve to my moto..
She was trying to open her eyes with her every strength.
Is it end? Is this how I am going to die?
Tears were falling from her eyes.
Help me...someone please...please help me...
Her eyes was about to fall.
Mom please help me...please.....help me mom... I don't want to die now I have to give justice...
Before giving up her eyes caught a person's face towering over her.
Mom...?
***********
"It feels like you are on my side."
"It's all in your head."
He was opening and closing his lighter while sitting in front of the window.
"Don't pretend like you are on my side."
Past and present were flashing before his eyes.
"Will you keep standing here? Fine. Suit yourself. I'm going to cross. It's getting boring."
He blinked his eyes.
"Drop your act of caring. It's getting boring now."
How ironic.
"You must have felt the same way, I'm feeling now. Right Dong-kyoug ah?" He murmured blinking his eyes.
Her eyes were full of hatred. Her thoughts on him was getting worse. He heard her thoughts; saw images inside her head. Hatred was the last thing he wanted to see in her eyes for him. His chest was hurting; his heart was hurting. He didn't know, what to do now. How to make her believe that he was on her side with her. He would fight for her, with her; he would do anything to keep her safe.
His eyes were gloomy, sorrowful. Her faces were coming before them. She didn't care about her life. She didn't want to live. She didn't have any willingness to be alive. Her situation was way worse than her past self. How could he help her, how?
'Help me...someone please...please help me...'
His train of thoughts broke and replaced by a moving image.
"Tak Dong-kyoug!" He almost screamed.
Without giving any second thought he teleported to her place. She was tied with a chair; no other living being was to be found besides her. Her body was losing it's balance and strength. He ran to her before her head fell on her shoulder. With his left hand he caught her immediately.
'Mom..?'
He heard her voice before darkness consumed her completely.
**********
"So this is how Pinocchio became human and stayed with his friend forever." After hearing the last line from her the children clapped their hands in joy.
She gave them a bright smile before keeping the book aside.
"So in order to become an adult we have to be nice kids." One of them asked.
She nodded her head.
"Did his friend wait for him to come back?" She nodded her head again.
"You have to have compassion; you have to help others. You have to be nice. Like Pinocchio leaned. Only then you all will become humans." Her eyes fell on her flower pot which was shining with a blooming flower. A pink Cosmos.
Her face lit up with a smile again.
"Children get up now. It's time for bed." With a bitter expression, they got up from their places heading towards the bed.
She was smiling at them. She liked staying with children; they were the purest form of humans. Sometimes she spent time in this orphanage. It gave her joy. Getting up from the chair, she came near the window. Her flower pot was shining beside it.
"Did his friend wait for him to come back?"
Hm, he did. He would have, even if had taken years.
Her eyes lingered to the pink flower; lips curled up into a small smile.
No matter how many stars they cross, how many seas they swim, how many dimensions they travelled, they would always meet each other.
No matter how many years it takes her to born, he will always welcome her holding flowers.
No matter how many days to take him return, she will always open her doors to him.
No matter how many times they get lost in the way, they will find each other; in the end the road would meet at same point; always leads them to their direction.
Even if it takes thousand years to meet, they will wait for each other.
As they are each other's only home.
She took a long breath, looking at the stary sky.
Afterall, they are matched in heaven; each other's red string...
*********
He laid her down on his bed. The blood stopped flowing, her body was getting it's strength back; her face was retuning back to It's colour. He washed away her pain fully; though she was still unconscious.
He was enraged, frustrated. How dare he to touch her!
He sat beside her laying body, inspecting her, searching for any other wound on her body. While Curling up her left sleeve, he eyes noticed some scars, old ones; made with knife. It didn't take him too long to understand the meaning.
Her desperate trials of ending her pain..
Melancholy built in him again. He caressed it delicately. His other hand was holding her wrist to give more strength. He couldn't let her being alone anymore. Even if it had to take him play some tricks with her; made contract with her or putting his existence into a line again, he would do that happily.
His eyes were moist, worried and full of adoration. He couldn't afford to lose her again. Not anymore. She was the only one he had. He needed to protect her.
I'm right here holding your hands.
You'll never be alone anymore; I'll stand by your side in every step.
In every dark phase of your life, you'll find me by your side, being your support and backbone.
I'll hold you when things go wrong, just call my name, I'll reach you in no time, guarding you dearly.
I'll be with you, from Dusk till Dawn...
