Part 1 of 5
*******
"So this is your final decision?" She asked looking at the woman in her late 20's.
"Yes. It's my final and last decision." The woman replied smilingly to the girl of early adulthood.
She nodded her head with her melancholic smile.
**********
D-Day
Dissipating from the world didn't scare me. But not being able to see you anymore scared me more.
Like a fool I have just realised that I don't have much time left!
Running on the stairs he came in front of the door. Without hesitation he entered the house.
But it was late, too late..
*********
He should have understood her intentions. It was her who caused everything. She was the one beacuse of whom Tak Dong-kyoug remembered everything. If he hadn't taken things in his hands now his ultimate plan, destroying the world would be ruined.
Her smile of knowing everything making him angry more. Her white hospital gown was perfectly intact as usual. But face was quite pale compared to earlier days. Thankfully, the canteen was empty leaving them alone.
"Did you realise what it means to have compassion?" Her usual feminine voice was making his nerves boiled.
"You smile a lot and feel bad for her. Don't you?" She asked smiling slightly.
His face was filled with confusion.
"Your feelings will grow." She declared.
Feelings for Tak Dong-kyoug? What a joke!
"Never!" He replied roughly.
"Do you think you can let her die?" She said again with her same expression.
"She is fated to die to begin with." He replied with his obvious tone.
She sighed looking at him before responding.
"Can't you change her fate?" She asked with an unreadable expression.
He chuckled mockingly.
"How can I worry about her? How can I feel bad for her?"
I am not a human. Not capable of such things. Did you forget it? You are my creator. How can you forget such things?
"You pity yourself the most in this world. Don't you?" She responded again after awhile.
He couldn't say anything this time. His fists got tightened.
"I pity the person who will die in place of her, in case you break the contract." Her eyes were on his brown ones which were reflecting conflict right now.
"Go. Afterall, you have to go back to her before 12 o'clock, mid night." She said smilingly looking at his dumbfounded face.
Without wasting any moment he stormed out from the hospital canteen.
°°°°°°°°°°°°
"Please give me your hand." Her face was filled with pain; tears was on verge of falling from her round, brown eyes.
She extended her right hand to upper side, reaching towards him. Her body was trumbling in pain; both hands were failing to keep her body weight on ground. Even though she was partly laying on floor that moment, her body was shrinking more.
"Is it your wish?" He asked again with his cold tone, towering over her, sitting on his toe, in front of her.
Her eyes were on fire; didn't utter a single word from her mouth. Not wanting to drag it more, knowing her stubbornness he touched her right hand. Her body relaxed in next moment.
With shaking legs she got up from her position. He stood up too.
"This is your grand plan." She said before crossed his side and climbing up the rod of the terrace and faced her back towards the empty space.
His face showed confusion.
What's she is up to?
She was hanging from the first floor. The height was quite high to be alive after jumping from it.
"So, this is my plan!" Saying it looking at his brown, confused eyes, she was about to loose her grip.
He jumped high to catch her body. Holding her body hurriedly he grabbed her shoulders; tagged her towards the safe place, letting both of them to land on the place away from the edge.
"Are you crazy?" He yelled after checking her wellbeing.
"I knew you would catch me. You are not human; can't sleep, eat, love. But I am a human." She said with her cold tone.
He was silent; didn't say a word.
"My plan is to love you. So that I can live without losing anything!" She declared making him dumbfounded.
His eyes were widened in shock before smirking.
What a joke!
"Then let's do it right." He said, tightening his jaw.
"Love me to the point that you want to destroy the world for me!" He replied with same expression.
Her eyes were burning.
"What do you say? Should I kiss you now?" He spoke up mockingly.
She smirked coldly before leaving him behind, for reaching towards her doorknob.
°°°°°°°°°°°°°
She was looking at his mocking smile. The cold, gray atmosphere around them was making it more difficult not to get angry.
"If I can't kill you, I'll at least make you miserable. So that you can live in misery for all eternity!" She replied after a brief pause.
"Try it. Do it if you can." His mocking smirk got widened.
She didn't respond. Her eyes were on him.
"But you're miserable immediately, if I don't hold your hand." He replied with his same expression, walking out from there, leaving her behind.
Tears were lingering on her sad yet angry eyes, refusing to fall from them.
°°°°°°°°°°°°
"I want you to love me. Can I wish for it?"
It was her last conversation before their kiss and his disappearance in the rain. Since then he was missing. He didn't come back to their house. That night along with the part of his house which was attached to her house after their contract, was vanished as well.
She searched him everywhere, from crossing road to subway, everywhere. But couldn't find him. She desperately wished for his coming back to her, sometimes to Deity and sometimes to him.
But alas! He was nowhere to be found.
Just then, next day, while working at her office she realised something.
At the end of her 100 days, when the contract would be ended, someone from her loved one would be vanished like this as well. Even if, she had tried her level best to plead in front of Deity endlessly, she wouldn't stop from what would happen.
That leaded her to decide her wish. It was final, unchangeable and unfortunate.
She wanted to save this wish for something significant to her and she knew, she would need it at the end, for sure.
Waiting for subway she was caressing the red bracelet he had given to her as his promise. She lifted her eyes from her right hand to her front and found him, looking at her on the other side of the subways station.
Her eyes widened and she ran towards the stairs to reach him before he disappeared again. After a whole day he appeared in front her. She couldn't let this chance go in vain. But before she could reach to the top stairs, her head began to pain again. Her cancer was making it's presence known everytime she did something important.
She was about to fall from the staircase but someone hold her right hand tightly.
It's him.
°*°
"It was the incorrect conclusion." He said breaking the silence.
She was observing his garden of frontier side of his mansion. Hearing his words she looked at him.
"What do you mean?" She asked for clarifying her doubts.
"You were right. You must not love me." He replied looking at the sky from his open balcony.
She just looked at him. Tears were about to fall. But she controlled it somehow.
"That's why, I can't grant your wish." He said again.
She couldn't stop from saying her next words. She just wanted to stop this conversation.
"It's cold. Let's go inside." She was about to go inside his house.
"It's impossible for me to love you." He continued his talk.
Her body stopped.
I know.
"Let's stop it. Let's stop living together." He concluded his word before looking at her eyes directly.
"Okay. Then let me ask my wish from you. Don't deny me this time." She said looking at his eyes.
Please don't refuse me.
"Okay. What is it?" He said in his nonchalant voice.
"My wish is, to make disappear every traces of that person who will die on that day; from every human's memories to the things which belongs to that person. Gradually, everyone will forget about that person, one day like he/she never exists. " She spoke up knowing what she was doing.
He didn't say anything at first. She was waiting for his response.
"Grant my wish." She said it again.
"Okay. Your wish will be granted that day when the person, whom you will love the most at that moment, will die in your place, for breaking the contract." He replied.
"Promise me that you will not back off from your word and grant my wish." She said looking directly into his eyes which were reflecting nothing but coldness.
He came closer to her extending his hand. Grabbing her right wrist, he was looking in her round eyes.
"I granted your wish." As soon as he spoke up those words she felt a power transection between their hands.
Slowly he removed his hand from her; she found herself inside her house without him and attached part of his house.
He was gone again.
°°°°°°°°°°°
It had been four days since their last meet. For some reasons she felt his presence at night after her sleep. But she couldn't stay awake to see him.
She was looking around her surroundings, remembering the days when she found out that she was going to die after 100 days. How she made contract with Myul Mang for painless death in exchange of destroying the world for him. Her one, stupid, drunken mistake costed a heavy price which she never could change.
"If you break the contract, the person you will love the most at that moment will die in your place. That's the penalty."
It was a devil's bargaining which she made with him. Though he was the one who tricked her to make this contract with him.
I can understand his desperation.
After going to his gray garden, his subconscious mind, she understood what he was running away from.
After opening his eyes, all he had heard was hatred from humans. From thousands years of his existence, the moment he was born he was being hated by all. It was natural for him not to understand any emotion or to love any human. They all were same for him, including herself.
It was hard for her to make him understand why she should live, an insignificant being. But she had understood it by now. It was never his fault. She was the foolish one not to understand it from the beginning.
He is not a bad guy. He is just doing his work despite of getting hate from others.
The signal for crossing road turned green. She was walking on the road remembering all those days when he was with her, holding her hand, while crossing the road together.
Realisation hit her like a thunder strike.
Will I be abled to bear the pain if he disappears for once and permanently?
Her body stopped. She was on the other side of the road, safely standing there. Her eyes were widened with her sudden realisation. The risk was not gone yet. The contract was still there. The person would die whom she would love the most at that moment. Even after her wish, she still couldn't help but feeling terrible for making anyone she loved disappear from their memories. She wanted to save herself from the heartbreak. But it was cruel.
Like a fool I just realised, losing you will cost me the worst price from my life! My life will be miserable not a blessing...
She began to walk faster, to release the pain from her heart. Gradually, she reached her house. Sitting on the floor of her living room, looking at the clock, she was waiting for him to show up and to tell him to stop coming to her. She didn't need any painless death. Rather than that she wanted his safety which only could happen if he stayed away from her.
But eventually, her body gave up; she fell asleep waiting for him in her office wearings.
°*°
It didn't take long time to know that he was actually here, in her house while she was sleeping. The pillow was under her head which she didn't put before her sleep.
He came here for recharge, like always.
"Why are you..." Her frustration broke it's limits.
"It's all because of this red string!" She looked at her hand.
Just get lost!
Without hesitation, she teared down the bracelet from her hand and threw it on floor.
"Now never come back again!" She murmured getting up from the floor.
As she resigned from her job after making an excuse; she had plenty time for herself now. It was not a joke; her clock was clicking afterall, faster than others.
While working on household chaos, after how many hours passed she didn't know, she began to feel pain in her head again. With no time it got worse; darkness consumed her.
°*°
After getting up from hospital bed, checking the clock on the wall she exited the room for fresh air. Her brother, Tak Sun-kyun was sleeping peacefully on her bed side. She didn't want to disturb him. It was nearly midnight, afterall.
Walking on the corridor she suddenly noticed a tall, familiar figure standing in the dark looking at her. She stopped walking. He began to walk towards her. From her intuition she knew it was him. She felt happy and frustrated at the same time.
Why are you here? I broke the bracelet then why you are...
He walked faster than usual and without any explanation he hugged her tightly.
"Tak Dong-kyoug!" After saying her name.
She was stunned by his action. It was so unlike him. But she couldn't complain rather smiled a little.
"You have definitely gone mad!" He nearly yelled after breaking their embrace.
°*°
After knowing the story from his side, why he was gone and what was his reason, she couldn't help but felt pain for him. It was never his fault to begin with.
"You know..." She was about to say something before something happened and she found herself from the hospital to a garden full of flowers.
She was still in her hospital gown. The garden was large, sunlight falling on her. Looking here and there in confusion, she spotted the girl she met at hospital. She was looking at her smilingly. Her short, straight hair was blowing gently with the warm breeze.
"Come here!" She said waving her hand towards her.
°*°
"I will wait for your decision." She said looking at her.
She gave a glance at her last time, before walking on the road, the girl showed her a few minutes ago.
She is not any ordinary person. I know it.
Reaching to the dead end, she stopped in front of a door.
After knocking the door she was looking at the glass made blue, crystal ball, the girl gave her at hospital as a gift, a few days ago.
°°°°°°°°°
DAY-50
She was waiting for the person who could help her in this situation. The only person she could rely on.
The girl from the hospital and the garden; afterall she was none other than, the Deity, almighty who created her and him as well.
She was waiting for her at hospital garden side, sitting on the bench.
"You came." She heard her voice and looked at her.
From her expression, Tak Dong-kyoug could guess, she had already known her decision; but still waiting for her to say it from her mouth.
"Yes. I finally made my decision." She responded with her usual smile.
°*°
"So this is your final decision?" She asked looking at Tak Dong-kyoug.
"Yes. It's my final and last decision." She replied smilingly to the girl of early adulthood.
Who is actually the Deity!
She nodded her head with her melancholic smile.
"Okay. I will respect your decision." She replied with same expression.
"Thank you. Thank you for everything!" She replied.
"Live your life the fullest; that will be enough for me." She replied with a smile.
"I will!" Tak Dong-kyoug replied with her brightest smile.
°°°°°°°°°°
"Why don't we live together again?" He asked again.
It became a routine for him to ask it every single day, as they stopped living together now.
"I want my privacy." She replied every time with same answer.
"As if!" He began to sulk as usual.
She smiled at him. He behaved like a kid sometimes.
15 days passed since her meeting with Deity. Since then many things happened. Her colleagues, aunt, Na Ji-Na, everyone knew about her condition. They tried to pursue her to get the treatment. He helped her to trick them to believe that she would recover soon as her 'boyfriend' was a doctor as well.
He will save me. That's what he says all the time.
Thanks to him, Tak Dong-kyoug was living her life happily with her loved ones. From shopping, to giving presents, to going to her hometown, Jeju with him, she spent all time with her love ones; loving her life fully.
She looked at the ocean waves before looking at him again. He was looking at her smilingly.
Thank you for everything, Kim Sa-ram!
°°°°°°°°°°°°°
D-Day
"Do you want me to stay for our last day?" He asked looking at her hopefully.
"No. I wanted to stay alone today with myself." She replied with a smile.
Today was the day which she was waiting for, the judgement day.
"How cruel!" He replied with a sulky voice.
She smiled.
"By the way, how much time do I have?" She asked although knowing the answer already.
"Untill morning 06.23. It's 12 o'clock, mid night. So around 6 hours we have." He said with his smile.
Only 6 hours I have...
"Okay." She responded before smiling at him brightly.
"Hey Kim Sa-Ram, thank you for everything! I am very much grateful to you. Thanks for being my lucky star!" She said looking at him before waving her hands, saying adios.
He was stunned for a moment seeing her going inside her house. A sudden void filled into his chest which he didn't recognise.
Standing there for more than 15 minutes, he finally left the place in confusion and emptiness. Something didn't feel right.
°*°
Entering into her room she changed her dress to the prettiest one she had and did some make up as well. Afterall, it was her last day.
Putting her favourite snack on plate she began to eat wholeheartedly.
************
Coming back to his home, he sat down on his comfortable sofa in confusion.
Is it normal to feel like that? Act that, like she did? Isn't she supposed to be clingy to him on his last day? Why is she maintaining a distance from him?
It was not today to be more specific. She was maintaining her distance from him since his coming back from the isolation. Although he knew, that she loved him. She never told him; but he knew, from her eyes when she looked at him with adoration. She was always with him, eating, walking on streets, shopping, everywhere. But at the same time, she was maintaining a distance from him.
Something definitely changed during his absence. He didn't care about it that much in past days, untill today. As she was Tak Dong-kyoug afterall; the most unique human he had ever encountered with.
But today his instinct was screaming at him. As if she were hiding something crucial from him.
What's going in her head? I wish, I were able to hear her thoughts!
Putting his weight on the sofa, closing his eyes, he was recalling their days together. Her bright smile whenever she saw her loved ones; her little antics which made him laugh everytime since their first meet. For her, he ate with her family, sleep with her during their previous days of love-hate relationship. He had waited for her to show up on every mid night to recharge. From beginning to ending of a day, his existence was resolving around her from past three months.
He jerked up from his position.
So, this is how to be a human feels like!?
Sudden realisation hit him. He got up from his sofa. It was morning 05:30; the Sun was about to rise. Without wasting any moment further, he left his house hurriedly.
°°°°°°°°°
Coming in front of her house, he stopped for a moment. Looking at her front door, he ran as fast as possible.
Dissipating from the world didn't scare me. But not being able to see you anymore scared me more.
Like a fool I have just realised that I don't have much time left!
Running on the stairs he came in front of the door. Without hesitation, he entered the house without knocking. He didn't have time for it.
Coming into her living room, he saw Tak Dong-kyoug laying on the floor. Coming closer to her, his blood ran cold.
Blood was coming out from her nose, already covered her half of the white carpet.
"Tak Dong-kyoug!" He towered over her, holding her body closer to him. It was cold, for a normal human.
Why didn't I feel anything about it? Why couldn't my instinct catch it? I am supposed to die today! then why this?
"Tak Dong-kyoug, Dong-kyoug ah, look at me! Look at me!" He was patting her chin continuously with a pleading voice.
But she didn't respond. His chest filled with fear, fear of losing her, the only human he cared about the most.
"Tak Dong-kyoug! Hay! Wake up otherwise I will do something to your house!" He yelled at her.
She didn't respond. The life was slowly fading away from her body; he felt it.
Tears were falling from his eyes, now, uncontrollably.
"How much time do we have?" He murmured looking at the wall clock.
It was showing 6:15 of morning.
"What to do?" He murmured looking here and there while holding her body closer to his chest.
Her blood flow didn't stop even after his trying hard.
"She is dying. You can't do anything now." He heard her voice, the only person who could help him in this moment.
She was standing just beside them, looking at them sadly.
I am not capable of making things alive. But she can!
"But you can. Please save her! Please!" He began to plead in front of her.
Holding her body on his chest with his left hand, he was holding Deity's right hand into his right hand. He was sitting on the floor holding her body; whereas, she was standing in front of them.
"I can't. She is fated to die. She choosed it." She revealed.
He was confused and scared for this sudden revelation.
"What do you mean?" With his shaking voice he asked.
The ticking sound of the clock was very loud into his ears, suddenly.
"Please bless me, grant me the wish, that in the end, the person whom I will love the most will be me, none else!" She said making him freezed on his spot.
"That was her decision, her wish. Final wish." She completed her sentence.
He couldn't move from his spot.
"She loved you too much to lose you, like her other family members. That's why, she took it on her." She replied.
Everything around him began to vibrate. Lights were flickering, things were falling down from shelves and other places.
He didn't move an inch from her. His eyes were on her, on her pale face. Just when the clock had stricken at 6:23am, her body became still, permanently.
"Love me to the point, that you want to destroy the world for me!"
She did; destroyed her world for him.
"I want to see you head over heels for me, leaving everything behind."
She did leave everything behind, for him.
He witnessed her becoming lifeless for the eternity.
At the end she left him without knowing, that he fell in love with her; how much he was deeply in love with her. She left him without knowing his confession.
She left him forever.
°°°°°°°°°°°
Her funeral was well spent. Many people did come to bid goodbye. Her brother who was normally a very emotional person, hold himself pretty well. One by one, her family members shaded tears in front of her photo.
He was watching it all from behind. His eyes were stucked into the photo of her funeral, which she had taken in front of him, on the first day of their contract. She was smiling in the photo like she always did even when she was sad.
"If I can't kill you, I'll at least make you miserable. So that you can live in misery for all eternity!"
She did.
How cruel you are for living me behind! How could you?
Surprisingly, not a single tear came out from his eyes. As if they were gone with her.
°°°°°°°°°°°
It took him a while to understand her wish properly and he couldn't undo it anymore.
Just like she wanted in her wish, slowly, silently her memories from other's mind began to fade away. It started with her name and ended up with her every photo which existed during her lifetime.
He was holding the last symbol of her existence in his hand. After everyone forgot about her completely, he merged his house with her again, making it a part of his own house. The house he used to hate during their first interactions and called it stubby; became the only comfort zone for him nowadays.
He was looking at her smiling face of the photo.
"Do you know how many stars collapse every second? 7.9 billion per second."
His fists got tightened around the photo frame.
"What make you special? Tell me!"
He gritted his jaw.
"Why should you live?"
A lone tear escaped from his left eye.
"You just happen to be there. It's like I want to throw a stone into a calm lake and you happened to be the closest stone."
"A convenient Coincidence!"
"What a fool I was!" He murmured caressing her face on the photo.
Gradually, like sand her face began to fade away, leaving no trace of herself in the world anymore. Her last symbol was gone too.
Finally, he broke down into tears and sobs long after her death, on his cold floor.
Which felt cooler than any other time.
°°°°°°°°°°°°
30 years later
Holding her yellow warm jacket he was smelling it.
"Your scent is still intact!" He murmured smiling a bit looking at it.
It became a daily habit of his to find her essence in everything from her belongings. Putting her jacket on cupboards he left the house for his business.
*********
"Hay Mi-so, did you complete that file? The suspect is still wondering around." A girl in her mid 20's asked another girl in same age.
"Yeah! Last night I completed it. I am going to confront him today. He killed his own wife; I am sure of it." She replied from her desk tieing her neck length, straight hair, tightly into a ponytail.
"Okay. I will let our team leader know about it." She replied.
"Okay. I am heading towards his apartment now. Will let you know, if something happens and if I had needed any back up." She replied with her usual smirk.
°°°°°°°°°°°
Keeping her car on parking lot in front of the building, she headed towards his apartment. But the atmosphere caught her attention.
The headlights of the cars, inside the underground parking lot along with the light bulbs were flickering continuously, unnaturally.
"What is this?" She murmured.
She was heading towards the apartment.
"Please leave me! I will confess everything to the police. Please don't kill me!" A male voice coming from the parking lot made her stop on her track.
She changed her direction towards that voice. Walking for less than 1 minute she witnessed two men. One of them was laying on the floor. Another one was sitting beside him grabbing the laying man's neck. She was walking slowly without making any noise. She was about to grab her gun; just then she recognised the person who was pleading to that man in black.
He is the one I suppose to meet today, at his apartment. My suspect! So, he indeed killed his wife.
Her realisation took a moment. On that moment, the other man looked at her direction. On that moment, his eyes got widened and he lost his grip from the laying man's neck. On that moment, he took the opportunity. Getting up from his position, he began to run towards his car.
She understood his intention and ran behind him.
"HAY! STOP THERE!" But he didn't listen and drove away his car as fast as possible.
She didn't wait for more moments and came towards her car. Sitting on the driver seat, she called her colleague.
"I need a back up! He is flying away!" Turing her car, she noticed the other man who was still looking at her direction with same expression.
His blueish green-grey hair was glowing brightly under those flickering lights.
***********
He did killed his wife, who loved him so much. It made him mad like hell.
How dare he!
He was pleading to him. But he was too angry to listen. Suddenly a humane presence, a familiar one, took over his senses and he turned his head towards that direction.
His body became still, eyes turned wider.
With her round eyes, she was looking at them. With same bright eyes, which she used to hold love for him 30 years ago; with same face, she used to let his chest filled with warmth. Same face, same height, same soul, even with her same expression of shock, she was standing there pointing a gun, wearing all black from leather jacket to shoes.
Tak Dong-kyoug!?
The man ran away. He didn't care. His all focus was on her only. He was about to go to her. But she chased after him with her car, leaving him completely dumbfounded.
Is it really her? I am not dreaming right?
Only she could tell him.
°*°
"It's her right?" Without giving her any moment of greeting he asked, while storming into her house.
She had a house now. Unlike 30 years ago she was quite old, living the longest life as human.
"Yes. It's her." She replied smilingly.
"How? I mean, humans have only one life right?" He asked couldn't hold his curiosity and happiness.
"Miracle? Don't waste your time here. Go to her!" She said with a smile.
"Yes! I must!" Smilingly he left the room faster.
With a smile of calmness, she turned her face towards the flower pot, which was glowing with a bloomed, pink flower, Cosmos.
"Just like I have thought, some things are unenviable. Her sacrifice caused one of a few miracles and let her reincarnate. Live your life fullest this time, without any hesitation, Mi-so." She murmured looking at her flower with esthetisy.
°°°°°°°°°°°°°
Park Mi-so, her name in this life time, working on investigation department, got a promotion last year. Age 25, youngest one in her branch.
He collected all the information after observing her for whole day. Her personality was completely different from her last life. Unlike her previous life and her name, she smiled very less. She was very reserved with her hot tamper. One thing was really common in this life too; she was hell workaholic.
He hadn't seen her smiling in whole day.
"It will be hard to pursue her." He said smilingly heading towards the department.
°*°
"So, she is Park Mi-so. One of the brightest officers we have." Head of department introduced himself to her.
"Nice to meet you. I am Kim Sa-Ram." He said noticing her narrowed eyes on him.
He extended his right hand for handshake.
"Park Mi-so. Nice to meet you too, Mr. Kim." She responded grabbing his hand.
'You are the same person with this odd hair colour, I saw yesterday.'
Oh, he forgot; only she could see her real face. Hearing her thought, made him relaxed and happy. He held her hand again after 30 years, for the first in her this new life, but, this time without any deadly contract.
He had no intention as well. Overnight he became the new team leader of her group, just to stay with her 24×7.
Giving a head bow, she left him with her colleagues holding a blue file on her left hand. He smiled. She didn't remember anything.
I will wait for you, until you remember everything about me, about us.
I will wait for you untill you call my name casually, the way you use to call.
I will be with you in your every even and odd, protecting you dearly...
...I'll be with you from Dusk till Dawn!
