Into the Unknown
A few weeks following Ash's birthday party, Trevor was given an assignment by his boss at the Pokemon Ranger HQ in Viridian City. He was tasked to investigate strange readings from within Cerulean Cave. For some reason, the Pokemon, living the cave, have all moved out. Whatever the source of the strange readings may be, it's having an impact on the Pokemon living there. Trevor accepted this task without hesitation and flies over to Cerulean Cave on his Charizard, who has become his main source of transportation to get around the Kanto Region. Since he needs to get to places throughout Kanto quickly, especially since he's a Pokemon Ranger, his Charizard's incredible speed allows him to arrive at his destination earlier than expected.
Standing outside of the cave, Trevor, in his Ranger uniform, stares at the entrance of the dangerous Cerulean Cave with a serious expression painted across his face. He's only been in the cave once before. He'll never forget that day, nor would he, because it was the day when he met Mewtwo and Angela. Although the events of that day might have started badly, it paid off for when the day met its end as Trevor obtain his Pokemon friend for life and the love of his life. Pokemon Ranger Trevor takes a deep breath before calling out his Mewtwo. His Mewtwo, nicknamed Gregor, appeared out of the Pokeball. When the light faded, the Genetic Pokemon looked up, and immediately, it knew where they were. It turned to look at its trainer before Trevor gave it a nod, which Gregor responded with a nod of its own. With both understanding the task on hand here, they both entered into the great unknown of Cerulean Cave to uncover the mystery of the strange energies coming from deep within the cave.
---
"Man," Gregor said as he and Trevor navigate through the cave's darkness, with Trevor leading the way while holding a flashlight. "Never thought we would be back in this place again."
"Well, Gregor," Trevor begins to explain. "Sometimes, life finds its way to make us revisit places from our past that we never thought to visit again. I mean, after all, this place was the start of our bond."
"Yes, Trevor," The Genetic Pokemon replied with a grin. "I remember. I was living here, all alone, until you arrived and revealed to be the offspring of my good friend, Michael."
"To tell you the truth, I was quite surprised that you knew my father," Trevor said with a smile.
"I could never forget him, Trevor," Gregor stated with a soft smile on its face. "After all, he saved my life. I did not know how I was going to repay him."
Gregor suddenly stops walking. It took Trevor a few seconds to realize the quietness in Mewtwo's voice. He turns to face the Genetic Pokemon and Trevor notices a small frown on Gregor's face.
"When you told me that he was killed by Giovanni, I was completely devastated that my dear old friend was gone," Gregor said with a somber tone in his voice.
Trevor walks back to his saddened Pokemon and puts his gentle, comforting hand on its shoulder. The Genetic Pokemon lifts its head to meet eye contact with its trainer, who gives the Psychic-type Pokemon a small smile.
"I know, Gregor," Trevor stated in a soft voice. "I miss him too, every day of my life."
"Yeah," Gregor responded.
"But," Trevor begins to explain to his grieving Pokemon. "Never forget, he'll always be there with us. Our memories with him are eternal. They'll never be replaced. His spirit was what fills our hearts with the strength to enjoy life with a great sense of confidence, passion, respect, and love towards everyone we have met in our journey through life."
"You're right, Trevor," Gregor responded with a smile. "I'm sure your father would be proud of what you have accomplished in life, so far."
"I wouldn't say I have accomplished the big stuff, like becoming Pokemon League Champion or an Elite Four member or anything," Trevor explained as he and Gregor resume navigating through the darkness of Cerulean Cave. "I did accomplish the important challenges in life, such as getting married, buying a house, and starting a family."
"Of course, you did," Gregor said, agreeing with its trainer. "By the way, I've been meaning to ask you this for quite some time now."
"What is it, Gregor?" Trevor said as he stopped and turned his head to meet eye contact with the Genetic Pokemon.
"If we knew Ash did not die, six years ago, what would you have named your daughter, instead of Ashley?" Gregor asked with a sense of curiosity in its voice.
"Hmmmm..." Trevor said as he puts on his thinking face, trying to come up with an answer to Gregor's question. "Well, if I knew Ash was still alive back then, I would have named her Brittany, Lily, Sarah, Julian, or maybe Debbie."
"Why Debbie?" Gregor questioned its trainer, which a puzzled expression on its face.
"I don't know," Trevor responded with his arms crossed. "It was one of the names that popped up when Angela and I were discussing potential names for our unborn child."
"Oh," Gregor said, before asking another question as they continue to walk through the cave. "What if it was a boy? What name would have given the child then?"
"Steve," Trevor answered.
"Steve?" Gregor said with a confused tone in its voice. "Why Steve?"
"I just like the name," Trevor said, making the Genetic Pokemon more curious about its trainer's choice of a name for a boy child. "Also, it reminds me of this show I watched as a kid, where the host's name was Steve. I loved watching that show, but I cannot remember its name."
"Really?" Gregor said with a surprised tone in his voice.
"Yeah. Anyway, we should focus on our assignment here." Trevor stated while changing the topic of discussion as to why they are exploring Cerulean Cave.
"I agree," Gregor said while getting its focus back to the task at hand. "So what do you think could be causing these strange energy readings that are making the Pokemon leave Cerulean Cave?"
"Not sure, Gregor," Trevor answered as they reached the end chamber of the cave. "But I think we'll get our answer soon."
"I hope so," The Genetic Pokemon responded as the two entered into the chamber, hoping for the answers to their questions.
---
As Trevor and Gregor enter the chamber, they noticed a lake in front of them. Trevor and Gregor turned to face each other and nodded. Gregor knew what this meant as it uses its Psychic powers to levitate both it and its trainer and carry them over the lake. Once they crossed over the lake, the Genetic Pokemon gently places both it and Trevor down on the ground with its Psychic powers. The area they've reach was a dead end, with nothing but a few sparkling crystals covering the walls and ground.
Trevor and Gregor begin to look around the area, but they see nothing out of the ordinary. As they continue to investigate the area, the more confused the Pokemon Ranger and his Pokemon become. After a couple of minutes, they were about to call in their boss to report; when suddenly, Gregor sensed a strange feeling from within. It lifted its head quickly and turned to face in the direction that triggered the strange feeling in his heart. The Genetic Pokemon began to slowly walk in that direction with Trevor noticing it.
"Gregor? Did you sense something?" Trevor asked his Pokemon, who does not respond to its trainer's voice as if Gregor was in a trance or something. "Gregor?"
Trevor turned to where his Pokemon was walking to. He then got up and started to walk over to the spot where Gregor was heading, When the Genetic Pokemon reached to that spot, it immediately broke out of its trance and sees its trainer standing next to Gregor with a confused, but worried look in his eyes.
"Is something wrong?" Trevor asked with a concerned tone in his voice.
"I sensed something. Something powerful that was calling to me. From there." Gregor explained while pointing to the ground that somehow attracted the Genetic Pokemon there.
"Hmmm...I wonder..." Trevor said as he starts digging up the dirt from the spot that Gregor pointed to.
Eventually, the digging ceased when Trevor uncovered an object that made him gasped and his face was expressing shock and awe upon what he discovered in the dirt.
"I don't believe it..." Trevor muttered as his Mewtwo looked over and it too was awestruck by the object they have found.
Their brains stuttered for a moment and their eyes take in more light than what is expected, every part of their body goes on pause while their thoughts catch up. What Trevor uncovered was a Mega Stone with a grey-purplish color of the Mega Evolution symbol in its core. This was not just any ordinary Mega Stone that they have found. It's the one they have been searching for a long time.
"Gregor..." Trevor said while looking at his Mewtwo with a smile on his face. "I think this is a Mewtwonite Y."
"Indeed, it is," Gregor responded with a big smile on its face. "Its power must have been calling to me."
"You might be right, Gregor," Trevor said as he stood up. "Remember how Korrina's Lucario was able to sense the Lucarionite back in Geosenge Town?"
"Yes," Gregor said while nodding to its trainer.
"I'm guessing certain Pokemon can sense where their Mega Stone might be nearby, thus the power emitting from those Mega Stones attracts the Pokemon to them," Trevor stated his theory.
"A good theory, Trevor," Gregor agreed with its trainer, before askings him a very important question. "So can we keep the stone?"
"Why, yes, Gregor," Trevor responded to his Pokemon's question. "After all, we've been searching for it for quite some time now."
"Yes, we have," Gregor said with a grin. "We'll have to figure out how should I hold the stone, while I am in battle."
"Don't worry about that, my friend," Trevor said with confidence ringing in his voice. "I got something for that back home that I'll have to give to you later."
"Alright, I can wait until we get home," Gregor responded while nodding happily to its trainer. "Besides, I remember what day is it today. I hope you did not forget, Trevor."
"I haven't forgotten, Gregor," Trevor stated with a grin. "Today's the anniversary of when I met both you and Angela."
"That's good," A grinning Gregor said, before continuing. "I hope you got something to give to Angela too."
"Don't worry, I got that covered," Trevor said while leaning against the wall. "Trust me, I wouldn't forget to give my wife something on our anniversary."
"What did you get her?" Gregor asked as Trevor got something out of his bag.
"This," Trevor said while revealing a necklace with a five-pointed star-shaped shell attached to it.
"What is it?" Gregor asked while staring at the necklace.
"It's called a Wayfinder Necklace." Trevor started to explain what his gift to his wife is to his Pokemon. "I've made it out of Thalassa shells that I found when we were vacationing the Alolan Region. An old friend told me how to make them, and I think I did a good job of making this. Don't you agree?"
"Yeah, it looks pretty good," Gregor praised his trainer's handcrafting work. "What does it do?"
"Well, it is supposed to bring luck to travelers," Trevor explained before continuing. "However, there's a deeper meaning behind them."
"Really?" Gregor stated, before asking its trainer for a deeper explanation of the Wayfinders. "Please enlighten me, Trevor."
"Okay," Trevor said, before starting his explanation. "Somewhere out there, there's this tree with star-shaped fruit. And the fruit represents an unbreakable connection. So as long as you and your friends carry good luck charms shaped like it, nothing can ever drive you apart. You will always find your way back to each other. An unbreakable connection."
"Wow," Gregor said in amazement upon learning about the true purpose of the Wayfinders. "Maybe we should give Ash and Serena some Wayfinders for each other."
"That's a great idea, Gregor," Trevor replied with a big grin, as he puts away the Wayfinder necklace. "I'll have to obtain some more Thalassa shells if I wanna make more Wayfinders. That's some good thinking on your part, Gregor."
"Thank you," Gregor replied with a huge smile on its face.
Trevor nodded with a smile before looking around the cave. With no signs of strangeness happening, he believed it was time to leave the cave.
"Now," Trevor begins to say, after observing the area around them. "Let's get out of this cave, and report back to the chief."
"Agreed," Gregor responded after it too looked around the area and not noticing anything out of the ordinary in the place where the Genetic Pokemon first met Trevor. "He must be wondering why we haven't reported in yet."
"Yeah, let's go," Trevor said as he and Gregor start making their way back to the lake.
But then, something caused both Trevor and Gregor to stop and stood still for a few seconds. They felt a chill in the air. It was as if an unrested spirit was in the area with them. Suddenly, an intangible figure passes through Trevor. When it did, the passage caused Trevor to experience many of his memories in rapid succession, before fully manifesting. The young man fell on his bottom before turning around and realizing that they were not alone.
Behind him and Gregor, there stood a figure wearing a single red-blackish leather hooded coat. It is adorned with a silver zipper and seemingly pointless blue beaded pull strings for the hood that form a semi-circle in the middle. The figure stood across from Trevor and Gregor as he stares at them with great interest and curiosity.
"Who are you?" Trevor asked the mysterious figure as he got up.
"It seems you are special too..." The figure in the red-black coat said in a soft voice.
"Riku? Is that you?" Trevor asked if the figure was someone he knew.
"No, but I know someone of that name..." The figure responded as light blue energy was forming in one of his hands.
"You remind me of him..." The figure said to the puzzled Trevor.
"Huh?" Trevor said, before gasping upon seeing the figure in the red-black coat about to fire an energy attack at him.
All of a sudden, a sword-like weapon appeared in Trevor's hands. It was shaped like a key and the top was shaped like a Pokéball. When the figure fired the energy attack, Trevor uses the key-shaped weapon to block it. Although he struggles to maintain his balance in his defensive position, he's able to deflect the energy attack towards the ceiling, causing an explosion that shook the area around them. As the debris fell to the ground, Trevor and Gregor have their eyes fixed on the figure, who attacked them, with a serious and angry expression painted on their faces. They do not know who this person is or what does he want from them. The figure's face is covered by the darkness of his coat's hood. Also, Gregor cannot sense this mysterious foe's emotions at all. All they know is that they have to be prepared for what the figure plans to do next.
"You have his key..." The unknown figure said while staring at Trevor's key-shaped weapon.
"You are his successor..." The figure said while Trevor and Mewtwo maintain their serious and battle-ready stance.
"If you truly are his legacy," The figure in red-black coat stated, as the expression on Trevor's face does not change. "Then allow me..."
All of a sudden, a Pokeball appears out of thin air in his hand. The figure extends his hand outward with the Pokeball in the mysterious figure's hand. Trevor maintains his stance as he knows what the figure is about to do right now. Just when Trevor figured it out, the unknown figure finishes their challenge proclamation.
"...to test your strength."
