9: Troubles
We walked down the tunnel side by side. Raph held my hand tightly, nervous about confronting his brothers and father with the news. The stairs to the lair were in sight and voices could be heard. But as we got closer, I heard that the voices were yelling, the loudest belonging to Leo. He sounded really mad.
"I guess Donnie told them already."
"Yeah. I guess so."
Raph's pace slowed as we got nearer to the stairs. By then, the yelling was really going down. I could make out individual voices. I heard April, Casey, Donnie, Mikey and Leo. April seemed to be trying to calm Leo down. Donnie seemed like he was trying to tell Leo that what happened was just an accident like all teen pregnancies. I felt slightly proud of them for trying to clear up the situation. Unfortunately, Leo didn't seem to listen to any of it.
"I don't care! The pregnancy has to be terminated. We need Raph and the pregnancy will only get in the way." There was a pause. "It's all her fault. It's all Raven's fault. If she had never come to New York none of this would have happened. I wish she never left the facility."
I couldn't believe that Leo would say something like that. I felt my heart break a little. I then felt pressure on my hand and looked down. Raph was tightening his grip. I looked at his face and saw that he had mixed feelings in his eyes. I saw fear, pain, and anger all in one. Movement from below made me looked down. Raph had moved his free hand and placed it over his stomach. It was like he was protecting the lives inside him from the hurtful words of his brother.
"Raph? We can go someplace else. We don't have to deal with this right now."
He looked at me and I saw the Raph I always saw. "No. I'm not gonna let Leo say those things. If he has something to say, he can say it to my face."
I grew worried. Usually when Raph and Leo fought, they ended up attacking each other. Raph couldn't fight Leo now. Sure, he could dodge most of Leo's blows but he usually got hit more than once. Raph saw my face and gave me a reassuring smile, followed by a peck on the cheek. He hoped he was right in thinking that things would go fine, but I had a feeling in my gut that said otherwise. Raph led the way to the stairs, holding my hand in a gentle, reassuring way.
Leo was still ranting about how Raph's pregnancy was bad and how it was my fault when we entered the lair. Leo's back was turned but everyone else stared as we approached. Raph let go of my hand and stepped closer to Leo.
"Leo."
Leo turned around and looked surprised to see Raph. but he instantly looked angry again when he saw me behind Raph. Leo stepped forward as if he wanted to confront me, but Raph blocked his way. Leo glared at me before turning to his brother.
"Raph, you have to get an abortion. We need you on patrols and the pregnancy will only get in the way."
I saw Raph stiffen slightly and curl his hands into fists.
"No, Leo. I will not get an abortion. I'm happy about being pregnant. I'm gonna be a dad and that there is the greatest thing that's happened to me. Why can't you just accept it and be happy for me."
Leo looked like he couldn't believe what he had heard. He looked at Raph and I saw just the tiniest sliver of hope that Raph would change his mind.
"Raph. Think about what you just said. You are only fifteen. Practically a child yourself. You're not ready for the responsibility of taking care of a baby, let alone two. Plus, just the other week you were complaining about how annoying babies were when a woman passed by with one. Now you're all happy and excited about them? What is wrong with you Raph?"
Raph continued to glare at Leo. His breathing had quickened as a result of trying to remain calm. But it wasn't really working.
"What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you? Yeah, I complained but now that I'm having two of my own, I can see that it's not as bad as you think it is, Leo. So back off and stop trying to get me to do something I don't want to do."
Raph backed away, his arms crossed over his chest. He dared his brother to say something else. I looked between Raph and Leo, worried that Leo would explode any second and attack Raph. There was tension and other uneasy feelings filled the room. After a bit, Leo turned to me and I grew scared. There was an anger in his eyes that I had never seen before. It was more intense than the anger he showed Raph.
"This is all your fault. This wouldn't be happening and Raph would still be the same. Why couldn't you have just stayed with the scientists?!"
I was stunned at Leo's words and felt tears prick my eyes. The words hurt and brought back memories of the facility. Leo took my silence as a weakness and charged, katanas out. He shoved Raph out of the way to get to me. I was afraid of Leo and did what came to my mind first: I ran. I heard Raph holler after me but I didn't stop. I just wanted to get away from Leo.
RAPHAEL P.O.V
"RAVEN!"
I watched as Raven ran out of the lair. She looked so scared and I hated Leo for scaring her. I was about to run after Raven, but a thin tail came out of nowhere and tripped Leo, making him fall. I looked to the source and gasped when I saw that Master Splinter had entered the room. He looked furious. I noticed that Donnie was behind Sensei and nodded at him. He had gotten help right when Raven needed it. Leo had gotten up then and stared at Sensei in shock, but Sensei just glared.
"What is going on here?"
Leo seemed lost for words.
"Sensei, Raph is pregnant and it's Ra-"
"SILENCE! I am aware of the situation thanks to Donatello. What I do not understand is why you are so angry about it? You should be happy for your brother. Instead, you blame Raven and chased her away."
Leo looked away in shame. He couldn't meet Sensei's eyes. Master Splinter then turned to me.
"Are you alright, my son? I saw Leonardo push you."
I smiled at Sensei. "I'm alright, Master Splinter. I'm just worried about Raven. She looked completely terrified."
Sensei nodded in understanding. "I saw her expression as well. Perhaps it would be best if you went after her. She could use the comfort of a loved one."
I nodded and started towards the tunnels.
"Wait!"
I stopped and turned to see April. She had something in her hand.
"Raph. Give this to Raven. It might help make her feel better."
April placed something in my hand and I looked at it. It was a silver locket with purple stones around the rim. Engraved in the center were the words I Love You. I looked at April, confused. She answered before I could speak.
"Raven saw this in the jewelry store and loved it at once. She wanted it really badly. I figured I would be nice and buy it and then let you give it to her as a gift. It would mean a lot. I also put a picture in it too."
I opened the locket and smiled at the picture inside. It was me and Raven a few weeks after we got together. It was also the first time Raven was introduced to a camera. It took a few tries before Raven grew comfortable with the flash. She looked so happy and free in the picture.
"Thanks, April. This means a lot."
April gave me a quick hug before gently pushing me towards the entrance. Once I hit the tunnel, I ran. It was still raining when I hit the streets, but harder than before. I was soaked within minutes as I ran across the rooftops. I looked for Raven but didn't see any sign of her. I thought of the places where she would have gone. I couldn't think of any places and headed to the place where I usually went to think things through.
The roof of the water tower had flooded a little but not too much. I paced through the water, thinking about Raven and the places she would go. I looked down at my stomach and sighed. I couldn't understand why Leo was upset. I knew that I wouldn't be able to go on patrols when I got further along in my pregnancy, but I could still go in the beginning. This was probably the happiest I've been in a long time. I leaned against the legs of the water tower and looked at the ground. I saw something black in the water and picked it up. It was a feather, but it was too big to be a regular bird feather. The feather didn't look like it had been on the ground for too long so I started to wonder if Raven was around. My eyes spanned the rooftops as I looked for any sign of my girlfriend. Then, I heard the slightest cry. It sounded close. I looked around and caught movement in the corner of my eye. Sitting on top of the water tower, her knees tucked up to her chest and face down, was Raven. She was crying and it hurt a little to see her like that.
"Raven? It's Raphael."
RAVEN P.O.V
I jumped at the voice and looked down. Raph was at the bottom of the tower. I was surprised to see him and then realized that I was still crying. Even in the rain, I thought that Raph could see my tears.
"What are you doing here?"
"I was worried about you. It was wrong for Leo to attack and scare you away. Master Splinter came out and stopped Leo before he could get to you. He's fine with everything, but he was angry at Leo for his reaction. He told me that I could find you. He said that you needed a loved one and that loved one is me."
I smiled slightly at Raph. "It was sweet of you to come, but you should go back to the lair. I'm sure there are some things that have to be settled."
"I'm not going back without you. It was wrong for Leo to scare you away. Besides, Master Splinter has made it clear that he is fine with the situation and with him alright with things, everyone else has to as well."
I looked away. I was scared to go back. When Leo charged, it reminded me of the punishments I would get for disobeying the scientists. There was so much fear during those times and Leo reminded me of that.
"I don't think I can go back. I'm terrified to face Leo. I don't want to make things worse than they already are. I'm sorry, Raph."
I looked away from Raph and started to cry again. I heard Raph shuffle at the bottom of the tower.
"Will you at least come down?"
I looked down at Raph and slowly uncurled. I carefully made my way down the water tower until I was face to face with Raph. I looked at the ground but Raph lifted my face up again. Hair had stuck to my face from the rain, covering my eyes. With a soft hand, Raph wiped the hair away, uncovering my eyes. He held my face in his hands and looked at me. He smiled and then kissed me softly. I gave him a small kiss in return.
"I don't care what Leo thinks. I'm gonna have a family with the most beautiful girl I ever saw. I don't care what Leo thinks. He can tell me to get an abortion all he wants but I'm not gonna. It's my choice and I chose to have a family with you."
Raph kissed me again, this time more deeply. I returned the kiss with equal depth. As I pulled away, Raph brought something out. I looked at it and gasped. It was the locket from the jewelry store.
"Raph?! Where did you get that?"
Raph smiled and proceeded to put the necklace on me. "I got it from April. She bought it and told me to give it to you. She had us in mind when she got it."
After the necklace was clasped together, I looked at it closer. I Love You was engraved on the front. I smiled and cried again, but the tears were tears of joy.
"It's beautiful, Raph. I love it and I love you. Thank you."
I hugged Raph and he hugged me back. Suddenly, a shiver ran down my spine and my teeth started to chatter. I felt cold and realized how wet I was. Raph looked slightly worried and wrapped his arms around me.
"I think we should get out of this rain and get you warm. You can spend the night in the lair and April can tell Maggie that you are sleeping at her place."
I nodded and smiled at Raph because my teeth were chattering too much to let me speak. Raph laughed and then led me in the direction of the lair.
