Chapter Twenty-Four

*Third Person's POV*

Meanwhile, inside the Cullen house, Aro, Marcus, and Caius stood in the kitchen, with their eyes glued to the back sliding door, watching the unfolding scene with a sense of amusement. Carlisle leaned against the counter, with a proud smile gracing his features as he observed Addi's blossoming interactions with the Guard. "It's wonderful to see her so relaxed and engaged." He remarked, with the pride in his voice evident. Esme, standing beside him, nodded in agreement, with her feelings swelling with affection for the young human girl. "Addi is really starting to warm up to everyone in the Volturi." She added, glancing at the Kings for their thoughts.

Aro chuckled softly as his eyes were sparkling with delight. "Indeed, it seems our future Queen is fitting in quite well. It fills me happiness to see her laughing with our Guard." Marcus, always the quieter of the three, simply nodded, with his expression serene as he appreciated the moment. Caius, however, had a more pragmatic view. "As long as she feels safe and accepted, we have little to worry about. She is doing excellent being more connected to our coven." He commented, with his tone measured but firm. He understood the importance of Addi to establish connections with the Volturi, especially given her unique position as their human mate. It was crucial that she felt a sense of belonging, not just within their ranks but also within the broader dynamics of the Volturi.

As the Kings continued to observed the scene, a shadow of reality flickered across the faces of Carlisle and Esme. Although they were proud of Addi's growing confidence and her ability to connect with the Volturi, they couldn't shake the feeling of melancholy that accompanied the knowledge of her departure. Being their adopted daughter, Addi had always been a source of joy and affection in their lives, but the reality that she was destined to be mated to the Kings weighed heavily on them. They wished for her happiness, yet it was difficult to reconcile that with the thought of her leaving their family to embrace her new role.

Noticing them, Aro broke the silence, addressing Carlisle and Esme with a reassuring tone, "We want Addi to feel as much a part of your family as she has always been. The connection she shares with you all is important and we will do everything we can to honor that." Carlisle appreciated Aro's words, feeling a sense of relief wash over him. "That is much appreciated." He replied, grateful for the Kings' commitment to ensuring that Addi's ties to the Cullens were not diminished by her future role.

Esme's expression softened as she listened, as her maternal instincts were flaring with hope. "It means the world to us that she won't have to choose between her family and her destiny." She said sincerely, comforted by the thought that Addi could maintain her connection with the Cullens while navigating her new life as part of the Volturi. This balance was essential for Addi's happiness.

"Family can take many forms and it's crucial that Addi understands she is loved by both sides. We will ensure that it will continue on for her." Marcus stated, wisely, as his words resonated with both Esme and Carlisle, reinforcing their collective hope that Addi would not feel torn between her origins and her new responsibilities. They understood that Addi's transition to becoming part of the Volturi would be complex and maintaining her connection with the Cullens would be crucial in helping her navigate this significant change.

Aro turned to Marcus and Caius and inquired with a curious tone, "Well, brothers, shall we step outside to see how our Addi is doing with the Guard?" Both Marcus and Caius nodded in response, with their expressions reflecting a mutual interest in checking on her progress.

Then, the Kings, with their regal demeanor and commanding presence, stepped outside. As the Kings approached the group, it drew the attention of the Guard. Jane, Alec, Demetri, and Felix instantly straightened their bodies, adopting a posture of attentiveness as they instinctively aimed to demonstrate the respect owed to their masters. "At ease, dear ones. We were simply checking to see how you all are doing with our dear Addi." Aro addressed, with his voice soothing and inviting, as his gaze swept over the group, with a hint of curiosity in his expression.

The Guard relaxed slightly, and one by one, they began to express their fondness for Addi. "She's a refreshing change. Having her in our midst has truly been a pleasure." Jane commented, as her eyes were shining with excitement. Alec nodded in agreement. "She brings a lightness to our usual routine. It's nice to have someone, even for a human, who can challenge us." He added, as a rare smile was creeping onto his lips. Demetri, unable to contain his amusement, chimed in, "And she just beat Felix at chess! It was quite the spectacle."

The Kings turned their attention to Felix, who had a glare fixed on Demetri, as the tension in his posture was contrasting with the lighthearted mood. Aro raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued, when he questioned, "I You mean to say that Addi bested our strongest vampire in a game?" Felix crossed his arms, attempting to maintain his intimidating demeanor. "It was just a fluke!" He retorted defensively, but the glint of embarrassment in his eyes betrayed him. Demetri, unfazed by the towering vampire's glare, simply shrugged, with a grin plastered across his face.

Intrigued, Marcus turned to Addi. "How did you acquire such skill in chess, my dear?" He inquired, genuinely interested. Addi's face lit up as she explained, "Well, my neighbors, the Bowers, taught me. I used to do some chores for them to earn a bit of pocket money, and after finishing, they'd let me play. They emphasized concentration and strategy, always telling me to think several moves ahead."

The Kings shared impressed looks with one another as they admired Addi for her ability to defeat Felix in chess. Aro chuckled, looking at Felix with a playful smirk, as he said, "It seems our dear Felix has met his match. Who would have thought that a human could outwit you?" The lighthearted jab drew a laugh from Marcus, who added, "Perhaps we need to reconsider our hierarchy within the Guard. If a human can defeat our strongest, what does that say about our training?" Felix rolled his eyes, with a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth despite his attempts to appear annoyed. "It was just one game! I wasn't even trying!" He protested, but his tone lacked the conviction he hoped to convey. The banter between them was lively and it was evident that the camaraderie was only strengthened by Addi's presence.

Caius, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up, "Regardless of the outcome, it's refreshing to see someone who can think strategically. You've proven yourself, Addi. It's not easy to outmaneuver even the simplest of minds in our world." His words, while authoritative, carried a hint of genuine admiration. Addi felt a rush of warmth at their acceptance and the playful atmosphere surrounding them. "Thank you! I really enjoy the game. It's all about reading your opponent and being a step ahead." She replied, with her enthusiasm evident.

Encouraged by their interest, Aro leaned in slightly, his curiosity piqued. "So, my dear Addi, what would you like to do with us today? You've already brought such joy to our guard; I can only imagine the adventures you have in mind for us." He asked. Addi beamed at the invitation and thought for a moment until she answered, "I was actually thinking about going on a hike. The forest around here is beautiful and I'd love to explore it a bit more." The moment she mentioned it, the Kings shared eager glances, with their interest visibly heightened.

Without hesitation, Aro responded, "A hike sounds delightful! We would be honored to accompany you." Marcus nodded in agreement, adding, "Nature possesses a unique ability to rejuvenate the spirit. Let us fully immerse ourselves in it." Caius, then, interjected with a hint of enthusiasm, saying, "It will give us a chance to explore one of your interests, Addi, and perhaps deepen our bond in the process."

However, Addi hesitated, biting her lip. "Are you sure? I don't want you to ruin your attire." She said, gesturing to their immaculate black suits, which contrasted sharply with the casual setting of a forest hike. The sight of the Kings in their finely tailored clothing made her feel a twinge of guilt; after all, they looked regal and composed, far removed from the ruggedness of the outdoors.

Aro, sensing her concern, smiled reassuringly. "Attire is merely fabric, dear Addi. What truly matters is the company we keep and the experiences we share. Besides, we have plenty of outfits at our disposal. A few scuffs or tears are of no consequence when the joy of exploration awaits us." He said, with a wave of his hand, dismissing her worries. Marcus nodded in agreement, with his expression kind and encouraging. "Nature has a way of enriching our existence. We would be foolish to let our clothing dictate our adventures." He added. Caius crossed his arms and chimed in, "If anything, the forest will add character to our wardrobe. How many can say they've hiked in suits?" His tone was teasing and it brought a smile to Addi's face.

Feeling reassured by their joviality, Addi's enthusiasm returned. "Okay, then! I'd love for you three to come with me!" She exclaimed, with her blue eyes sparkling with excitement as she was looking forward to share one her interests with her mates. "Just give me a moment to change into something more suitable for the outdoors." She said, turning toward the house.

"Take all the time you need, darling. We're in no rush." Aro said, affectionately. Marcus chimed in, his tone equally gentle, "Absolutely, Addi. Your comfort is our priority. After all, it's important that you feel at ease so you can fully enjoy our time together in nature." Caius added with a hint of a smirk, "And besides, it gives us a moment to prepare ourselves for the wilderness. I'd hate for us to be caught unprepared in the face of nature's challenges." Addi couldn't help but smile at them afterwards from their words before she got up from her seat and headed inside the house.

Once Addi was inside to change into more suitable attire for their hiking adventure, the Kings exchanged amused glances, excited by the prospect of experiencing nature alongside her. Aro's playful enthusiasm, Caius's rare smile, and Marcus's quiet approval reflected how much they cherished this human girl who shared a bond with them within their immortal lives. With the promise of a shared adventure on the horizon, the Kings prepared to step out of their formal roles and into the wilderness, eager to embrace the joy and simplicity that Addi brought to their otherwise structured existence, ready to welcome whatever the hike might bring.
