❁Prologue❁
"Dandelionkit."
A brightly colored tom meowed aloud to the Clan, Sunstar. One of our leaders.
I sat up straight and puffed out my chest, allowing the hard hot sun melt onto my ginger pelt. I let a small purr escape due to the warm pleasure.
I'm four moons now, time to get a mate. I shot my sister a stern glance to the left of me. She seemed just as nervous as I was.
I remember when momma was alive, she always told us secrets, we still haven't told them.
They'd always been about love and our mates. She'd explain how we didn't have to love our mates, but we had to play pretend to love them.
That it's what the heart wants, that's all she told us two moons ago before those vicious cats had taken her to be executed for- well, I don't know.
As I noticed the leader's eyes flicker to me after the three of them discussed about the two of us.
I quickly took my tongue and dragged it over my pelt to smooth it out after I'd ruffled it up.
Me being four moons old and being the oldest kit in the nursery along with Sorrelkit, that meant my mate -even if I got one- would be younger than me.
"As I was saying." Sunstar interrupted the chattering cats, "Dandelionkit, your mate will be."
His eyes scanned the clowder for a particular kit, that's when his eyes landed on someone sitting behind me.
"Lightningkit!" His voice boomed.
I felt my heart drop in my chest, Pebblekit is such a lovely tom. But momma told us tom's and mollie's were the only cat's that would be paired together. They would never allow two tom's. It just didn't make sense.
Lightningkit's squeaks stopped my thinking process, she'd always been an admirer of my sister, Sorrelkit.
She claimed Sorrelkit was the most confident and brave cat she knew, that's probably all I'll be hearing about due to her being my mate.
"Do you promise to StarClan that you will love each other forever, even in the afterlife?" Sunstar asked, towering over us, "And to never love another cat?"
I stiffened up, all I could do what nod unlike Lightningkit who automatically answered with a big yes.
"Now, Sorrelkit."
A different leader announced, Harestar. Due to it now being time for Sorrelkit we dipped our heads to the she-cat and let them make Sorrelkit's announcement.
"I am ready." The calico replied.
"Good luck, Sorrelkit!" Lightningkit loudly called to my littermate.
Harestar's glare was cold and stern as she looked her up and down, making my stomach churn as I thought where this may go.
"Bland, common." Duckstar finally spat out for Harestar, making my sister and I jump at the words they used to describe her,
"Thickfurred calico pattern, common." Sunstar shrugged.
I wanted to open my mouth and defend but one, I was scared. Two being that Lightningkit had already spoken up for the cat she admired.
"I object!" She squeaked in a bratty tone.
All eyes landed on her, not s single cat in sight blinked.
Her father, Sunstar stepped up. "Lightningkit, dear. Excuses and opinions may be spoken once you're a warrior, but no one want's to be punished so I'd suggest you to close your loud mouth."
The ginger she-kit put her ears back and slowly squatted down due to embarrassment. She ducked her head to block out the eyes of others.
I looked over to Pebblekit, who was sitting alone. If only we had ended up together.

So yeah, I'll admit that I'm not the best at prologues. I hope you enjoy Chapter One if you decide to continue on!
